    Kenmore Ultra High Efficiency Water Softener September 06, 2011

    I replaced an older Kenmore water softener with this one.  I really like the larger valve, lighted display, and even the salt tank light.  It works really well and the soft water makes such a difference in dishes, clothes, plumbing, and showers. It also has some nice programming features.

    This should be as easy to install as a water heater, but Sears only includes the 1" installation adaptors and does not offer 3/4" or 1.25" adaptors at all.  I finally found the perfect solution at waterconnectors.com.  They offer a water softener stainless steel flex line (Falcon Model SWC134) with a 1" FIP on one end and a 3/4" on the other. It comes in a 18" or 24" length and it worked perfectly and makes for a clean installation.  I hope this information helps someone else.  Sears should take note and offer these connectors as an option.

    Great performance but has major design flaw May 18, 2011

    We've had this softener for around 3 years now and its performance has been great but has a major design flaw. The area where the pipes, etc go into the machine is left wide open for rodents, upon opening the unit for maintenance I discovered a mouse nest loaded with droppings and urine. If rodents, insects, etc. have access to the location of your softener than this is NOT the softener for you.

    We are very pleased with our water softner. We installed it easily ourselves and our water has been baby soft since installation. This water softner handles easily our home with four bathrooms and large loads of laundry constantly being done.

    It's hard to know if we're saving on electricity or not, but the quality of our water is much better than with our old worn out model. Water pressure has greatly improved as well. We paid a local plumber $99 for swapping out the old and new models and our softener was up and working in just over an hour.

    We ordered this online and received an Email that very same day that it was ready to be picked up at the store. Pickup was exceptionally well organized (much better than ********** in-store pickup arrangement), and less than 3 minutes passed from the moment we arrived until the package was securely resting in our van. After unpacking it we discovered that we would need adaptors to connect our 3/4" pipes to the 1" male fittings that came out of the bypass valve. Another reviewer on this site had recommended Falcon Stainless (www.falconstainless.com), so we called them (1-800-814-8444) and they shipped the parts out that same day. They arrived 2 days later and the installation only took an hour. The plastic bypass valve looked flimsy and cheap (The one on the old water softener that we were replacing was twice the size and made of metal.), but connecting it up was a snap (literally - there are snap connectors on all 4 ports.) and it was tight and drip-free from the first, which was a pleasant surprise. Once hooked up, we filled it with salt and manually triggered a regeneration. The unit is very quiet (much quieter than our old one) and easy to program and adjust. We've only had it a week, so we can't say anything about longevity or dependability. But the water is soft and we're hoping for many years of continued service.
