Tractor oil is the lifeblood of your machine

We carry the oil you need to keep your lawn tractor operating at an optimum level throughout the life of the machine. Regular oil changes are important for any motorized machine, whether it's your automobile or your lawn tractor. Have you ever heard that old saying, "Only floss the teeth you want to keep?" Well, only change the oil in machines you want to work. Dust and dirt from working in your lawn and garden builds up in the oil. Metallic shavings end up there, too, as just part of the normal wear and tear of the machine. These contaminants become sludge in the oil. Whereas the oil lubricates the engine, sludge is sticky. If there's enough sludge buildup, the result is engine failure.

Check the owner's manual to find out how often the manufacturer recommends an oil change for your lawn tractor. Usually, you need to change the oil once a year. However, sometimes it's best to change it more often. For example, if you live in a dry, dusty environment, those particles are going to become sticky sludge. Oil, air and fuel filters will help keep some contaminants out of your engine. They need changed regularly, too, along with tractor spark plugs. In addition to following the instructions in the owner's manual, you can find videos online to show you how to change spark plugs. Next in line when it comes to maintenance is the replacement of tractor belts. Cracks, tears and shiny spots are signs of wear. Change the belt when it's worn and still working to avoid a breakdown when you're in the middle of a lawn or garden project.

Oil keeps your engine alive and running and sharp tractor blades keep your grass alive and healthy. Dull blades rip and pull grass instead of cutting it. Ripping and pulling weakens the grass, making it prone to diseases. Dull blades also put stress on the mower. The blades need to be sharpened regularly, at the start of the season and once a month after that. If you have a lot of acres to mow, you may have to sharpen them even more often. Sears cares about your safety, so make certain that the engine cannot start when you are removing the blades and putting them back on. Take care when removing the blade so you don't cut your hands. Use oil to loosen bolts if needed. Inspect the blades. Bent, dented and thin blades need replaced. If the blades are still in good condition, sharpen them until they're butter knife sharp and reattach them. Sears has everything you need to perform proper and regular maintenance to keep your tractor working for years.
