Get the whole house in the mood with festive Halloween dcor

The right Halloween decor can make any home go from inviting to spooky in a heartbeat. The trick is to get the right balance between fall fun and spooky haunts. In fact, much of your Halloween decor could do double duty for the rest of fall and thanksgiving if you plan carefully. Outdoors, you can set the mood with seasonal items and add on a few Halloween props to add a little ambience as guests walk up to your front door. Inside, you can add ghoulish accents to your regular fall decor to create a mood that is subtly Halloween without screaming it.

Outdoors, start with the basics; a hay bale and some pumpkins are great fall items that can be used well into November. From here, you can tailor your Halloween fun to match your specific needs. Hang up a string of cheesecloth ghosts over your door, or sprinkle the yard with some eerie tombstones. Animatronic ghosts and goblins have become affordable in recent years, which means you may be able to decorate the yard with a few extra scares. If a life-size model of Freddy Krueger isn't for you, then you can still get the same effect on a smaller scale by lining the sidewalk with light-up skulls or motion-activated bats. Look for items that can withstand a fall frost or rainstorm, so that you will be able to keep these spooky decorations in working order for many years.

Once your guests come indoors, they will be expecting a home, not a house of horrors. Of course, it could be fun to host a haunted house on All Hallows' Eve, but you probably want to be subtle when it comes to your home. You don't have to give up on your Halloween flavoring, you just have to find creative ways to incorporate it into your home. For example, some great Halloween table linens will really liven up your dining room table; all you have to do is choose which linens will feature ghoulish accents. While you want to deck your table out, you also don't want people to go blind from so many brightly decorated placemats, napkins and tablecloths. Instead, choose your linens in mostly solid colors like black and orange, then accent them with pieces covered in festive prints.

You can also dress up regular fall decor with a few inexpensive Halloween additions. Throw some spiders in your cornucopia and drape fake cobwebs over your candlesticks. Halloween floral arrangements are easy to make by tying some decorative ribbon around the vase and adding cobwebs in amongst the leaves. All you need are a few inexpensive accent items to add the right spooky touches to everything. Don't forget to add some throw blankets in festive Halloween colors. These are easy to remove and pack away, and they are great for crisp fall evenings as well.
