This small camp axe is what others are judged by.

I recently had bought a Buck lightweight camping axe and it came without the blade being sharp. The Buck was returned with disappointment. I have vast experience in carpentry and with Estwing tools in particular and went to them for a camp axe.

My backpacking wood needs are mostly done with a folding buck-saw so I use a camp axe mostly for driving tent stakes and knocking small limbs off cut wood. Using this criteria I wanted an axe from 14 to 19 inches long. I actually would have preferred the 19 because in an emergency it could splint your leg from foot to knee.

The Estwing axe is one awesome piece of quality workmanship. I truly don't know how you would destroy one. If you compare the "hammer" side of the axe head against the current "bling" of Gerber, Buck, and Kershaw you will see the Estwing has superior size for driving tent stakes. I also was always afraid that a miss could destroy where the head mounts to the plastic wraparound on the "bling" axes. The whole head area and handle on Estwing is one piece of solid steel and tough. The axe is full tang construction its entire length to the other end. Estwing axes come with a wicked sharpness and instill a "no-nonsense" confidence in your equiptment. Handle is also curved for ease of use and gives a comfortable handgrip when swinging either side. (chopping or hammer)

Estwing makes axes with either the blue rubber non slip handle or the wrapped leather handle. Call me old fashioned but there is just something nostalgic about a pack carrying a leather sheathed and leather handled tool. I added my leather sheathed and handled K-bar and they look like solid pals ! Topping off this look is the fact that Estwing chose to emboss the sheath with acorns and oak leaves for a class presentation. One suggestion I may offer is use the same "pine-tar" that baseball players use on their bats on the leather handle of the axe to coat a nappy grip which will not be affected by water or sweaty hands.

Buy with confidence on this one.

Estwing sportsman's axe - e24a
Ordered two of the axes and the quality is not what I have expected from a product made in the USA! Is there any quality control at Estwing? Very disappointed.

Bought this for my boyscout son. Really nice axe. Something that he'll have his entire life. The sheath is nice also. Tried splitting some logs with it, worked good.

awesome

my husband requested this item for his birthday. He already has the Estwing hammer that he used for work everyday as he is a carpenter. He likes the leather handle and the fact that it doesn't get loose and turn while trying to use it. The quality and make of this axe is wonderful and couldn't be better. This is one of those items you buy that will truly last the lifetime. I recommend this product.

Beautiful axe

This is a bulletproof axe. You never have to worry about the axehead coming off as it's all one peice, The stacked leather handle is a bit smooth so I might roughen it up with some sandpaper and then apply some neatsfoot oil to keep moisture out. It comes with a nice worked leather sheath that needed an application of neatsfoot oil to protect it. All in all a great little axe for the price!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Love it, tough little hatchet, fits the jobs I need it for

My sons received one of these each last Christmas. I borrowed theirs so much that I had to buy one of my own. Found a great price at Sears, also super fast shipping.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

A must have...

I can't say enough good things about this axe. It's functional, well balanced, and gorgeous. I use it primarily to knock the branches off of logs before I stack them. It is tried and true. everyone should own at least one.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

The 14" Estwing Sportsman Axe is of superior quality.

I researched this axe on several sites so I knew much about it and was happy with all aspects of the tool, along with the price-it was a few dollars less at Sears than other sites. The shipping was free by ordering on-line which was a bonus compared to the other distributors. I went to the store to order and the employee who assisted me was very helpful and, at my request, ran a picture of the item should it not arrive in time for Christmas (it was purchased as a last minute gift). It came two days later!!! Happy, happy!! I guess the only complaint is that it is not carried in the store. Not being able to see or feel it in my hand almost caused me not to purchase, but I knew Estwing to be a great product line and put my trust in Sears. So glad I did, it was exactly what my son wanted-they camp a lot and he heats with wood and did not have a good hatchet.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Excellent balance and cut

This is one of the closest axe type tools, coming presharpened I've seen for years.

The included leather head sheath probably helps maintain the keen edge the folks at the Estwing factory have put on this tool.

Leather handled, solid steel shafted tools are almost a throw back to an earlier, often finer tool time.

Owning one of these tools is a real pleasure.

Whether you are actually cutting something with it, driving in tent stakes only, or splitting kindling for "the fire".

I would recommend this product to a friend.
