Great for the Money!!!
I use this sander to make Knives. It's outstanding to profile my Handmade Custom Knives. Maybe could use a little more power, but for the price, it can't be beat!! Would buy another if something was to happen to this one!!

THREE STRIKES and your OUT

This machine is pitiful.  I order sander #1 online and picked it up at the store.  When I got home, unpacked, and started assembly, I noticed one of the rubber feet were missing.  I removed the base to see if the missing foot was inside the base and saw that the starting capacitor was loose and the mounting was broken.  I called and was instructed to return it to the store and reorder.

Sander #2 came today and upon opening the box, the motor base was cracked across its entire width.  Back to the store for a refund.

At the store, the associate said they actually had a sander in stock.  The box looked good, the contents were good, and I took it home.  They even gave me the sale price which became effective today.

Once assembled, I lifted the belt arm up and noticed the motor end caps were moving!  On further inspection, one of the two motor case bolts had been stripped when it was put together, making the motor unsafe and useless.  After supper I will take Sander #3 back and not get another.

This machine is a great idea and has a good price, but it is by FAR the worse quality machine/tool to carry the Craftsman name that I have seen in my 62 years.  I am disappointed in not having the machine and I am angry that three machines were broken on arrival.   DON'T BUY THIS JUNK!

1/3 hp belt sander

Why would you make a machine (it's only a couple of years old) that YOU DON'T SELL THE SANDING BELTS FOR? This is really a sad situation. I have to go to an outside source to acquire the 2x42 inch sanding belts.....and of course it cost an arm and a leg. Very disappointed with Sears. You use to be a quality store!

Excellent Sander

Directions were not real clear. Assembly was relatively easy. Sander works great. It is sturdy. Mounts to the table very easily. Very easy to use.

Good for light duty, making adjustments can be frustrating though.

I got this to primarily grind metal for knife making and the occasional wood shaping. The motor is really too fast and burns wood, on the disc especially, and requires frequent quenching when grinding steel. As far as the motor bogging down, I quickly got a feel for how much pressure can be applied to the wheel and belt without any issues. My biggest complaint with this machine is that there are different allen wrenches to adjust tracking, 2 work surfaces and the platen. Moreover when tightening any and all of the allen head bolts, it moves the work surfaces, etc out of your desired position. Takes a little getting used to, but a decent machine for the price.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Cheap sander with a few issues

The overall product seems to be nice for the price, but it is definitely not as well built as one would expect from a Craftsman product. I finally got mine set up right, but the aluminum disc for the disc sander is so badly warped it is not even usable. I am still awaiting a response from Sears regarding getting the aluminum disc replaced. Just so one knows, it is only a 1/3 HP motor, don't expect it to be able to rip through something with heavy pressure.

2x42 Belt Sander

Got the sander to start making knives. Opened the box and inspected, disc sander table had a bent screw. Replaced with my own. Other than that it will do what I need it to do. The 1/3 HP motor is really worthless and it runs fast. You have to use a light touch to keep from burning metal you are working on, not even going to try sanding any wood. Also very easy to stall.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

It has potential, but...

I think this would be a good sander if you're lucky enough to get one that is serviceable. I have bought two in the last few days, the first one was returned due to missing parts and the second could not be fully assembled because the holes for mounting the work table for the disc would not align to be able to attach the table. I did get a chance to turn it on and it seemed to work well but never was able to use it to write a review better than this. Quality control in the factory is apparently lacking.

Good personal sander

I'm used to larger more industrial sanders but this unit works well - it's just smaller. Unit was packaged well, minimal assembly, and it's very solid. I have the Craftsman universal tool stand I was hoping to mount this on but it's not a good fit. I'll have to mount plywood to the stand and this sander to the plywood. I picked this unit over others since it's basically a grinder with sanding attachments. This is a good home use tool. I've had it a week and used it a dozen times already. Does best on small items, but with the guards removed you can sneak in a long board here & there as well.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Good versatile sander

Setup was a little unclear, but I figured it out. Had to make adjustments so belt tracked properly. Have used it a couple of times and does what I expected. Good compliment to my old Sears Craftman bench grinder. Belt changing is easy.

Very effective sander

This sander is probably the most used tool in my workshop. More than enough power for the average sanding job. Very user friendly. My only small complaint is that it takes some patients to get the table perfectly square to the belt. You have to really hold the table in place when tightening it down or else it will move slightly off square.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Craftsman 21513 1/3 hp Electric Belt/Disc Sander (21513)

I've had one of these for quite a while now and seem to use it for everything from knife sharpening to styling knife handles to grinding tasks and it works on everything I throw at it. I keep 3 different belt grits handy and I can change the belts in less than a minute, and then I keep the disc equipped with an extra fine sanding disc most of the time for fine finish work.

This machine is great, but watch what you're doing, or you may end up with too much in the dust bin and not enough left on your part... that is how good it is.

You can use left over 1" belts if you have them...

Great overall machine that should give you years of fine service just like mine.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

It's an OK sander

If I would have known how hard it is to find sanding belts for this machine, I never would have bought one. Don't buy this machine get one with the standard size belts. It's hard to track the belts also.

Great sander and but

I bought this sander to use in my knife making.  I make custom knives from 4 to 10 inch in stainless to D2 tool steel. My brother a knifemaker guild member taught me but I could not afford $2800.00 for a grinder to grind my own blades.  I bought this grinder and had it delivered to my home for under $120.  I have made 8 knives with it all sold for an avarage of $250.00 and it does not bog down.   Tracks great. Never had to adjust it yet.  Belt change takes 30 seconds.  Belts can be ordered on line at Jantz knife makers or TrueGrit.com.  Best buy I have made ever for my knife shop.  Give it 10 Stars.  JWLuckett.com

Great tool sharpener

I use my Craftsman sander for restoring old woodworking tools and creating the occasional custom tool.

The belt does a great job of quickly and efficiently leveling mushroomed chisel sockets and reshaping bevel angles on cutting edges, without burning the tool's cutting edge.

Using a belt, or the disk, I can shape flat or convex ground edges for doing tough cutting jobs.

The bench grinders are limited to hollow-ground edges.

Belt change is quick and easy.

This tool is quite a bit more powerful than another belt sander, I once owned (stolen).

I would recommend this product to a friend.

great sander

I am making a cradle for my new grandbaby and just bought this sander it has made short order of my work. it has enough power for the job and was easy to set up I like the 2in belt for getting into those hard to reach areas. I like the dust port I hooked my shop vac right up to it worked great I would liked to have seen some sort of dust port on the belt side but all and all I love it great sander and I would recommend it to anyone.

Great little sander

I purchased this sander on the recommendation of a friend. I used his and it is amazing. It is easy to assemble, works wonderfully, and has enough power for all the uses I need. Overall it is an excellent little shop sander. I wanted one that I could use for minor sanding tasks and shaping and this fits the bill. The vacuum attachment point is a real plus for those of us that like to keep things clean. Works great on both metal and wood. Everything I wanted and more.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
