Filters are available
I spoke with a rep. from Sears Parts direct and the pre and post replacement filters and RO membrane replacement filters are still available. If you go to SearsPartsDirect.com and search on the reverse osmosis model number, the filters show up as discontinued. However, if you search on the replacement filter part numbers, you will find them. The part numbers are as follows: Pre and Post filters: 3805607 RO Membrane filter: 3857706 In case you're talking to a Sears rep. and they ask, the DIV number is 42 and the PLS number is 625. Hope this is a help to anyone looking for the replacement filters.

Replacement filters are expensive.
It works fine, fairly easy to install. Not economical for replacement filters. Current prices of replacement filters: Pre and Post Filters (Sears) 42-38056 $49.99 Reverse Osmosis Membrane (Sears Parts Direct) 3857705 $58.67 Plus shipping = More than the whole system cost if the first place. .

poor quality faucet

The system does it job, but the faucet that came with was of poor quality. Trying to get the toggle bolts to wind up under sink was difficult with the three tubes. One of the toggles broke and I ended up having to order another faucet on line from **********.

Very satisfied with Sears RO

Ten years ago we bought our first Sears RO. We were very pleased. Our son lives there now, and it still does a fine job. He replaced the RO cartridge after 7 years. We moved and bought a new RO for this home. We love it as well. Both times we mounted the tank and filters in basement to be cooler water temp and easy access to change filters. Both homes had city water. One house did not have a water softener, the second did. RO does fine with both. I had a plumber do the installation, but it looked easy.

LOUD! But filters great.

I previously owned a GE model and it was spectacular but I have always thought of myself as a loyal sears customer so when I moved, I switched to Kenmore. It was a mistake. After every time you use it, it will make a gurgle sound until it is done filling the tank. Usually about 15-20 minutes. I gave it three stars because the water does come out perfect, however, there are systems that also give you perfect water and do not gurgle for 20 minutes!

oily gray film on the top of water after process of filtration

We just got the system. The one of the catridges had the broken casket on it -- the store changed the catridge. The system was installed by the plumber, and it was still leaking -- so it was fixed, I don't know for how long. We purged the water filtration (ran the water through) for the longer time than it was requested in the manual for the system -- the filtered water still have the bad taste. Also, when you pour water into the the pan or some volume, you could see the thin oily colour gray film of particles flowing on the top of the water. We ran water through the system again: no changes.

kenmore reverse osmosis drinking water system

It was hard to install, it leaks, I wasted my time and money. I wanted to return this filter but i don't know if SEARS will still accept it and will refund my money. I DO NOT recommend this product to anybody. They really need to review this product.

Would not reccomend the unit with reminder light.

Since living in Arizona we have had many RO systems, and never had a problem like this one. There are no concerns with the water filtration, however the faucet has a major defect. Water backs up into the battery compartment and corrodes the battery. We had the faucet replaced under warranty after the first 6 months. The repair man from Sears said it must have been a defective unit. For the next six months we noticed water tricking out of the drain hole which once again corroded the battery unit. Since it was out of warranty they wouldn't do anything for us even though it was an ongoing problem. I talked to the Sears store where we bought it and they contacted the district manager, but he wouldn't do anything other than give us half off on a new unit. I certainly won't buy another one of these.

Great Product and Great Pricing

This is a great filter that really  gives quality water. My husband used to work in construction before, and he was able to install it himself, but still was a bit tricky, so if you don't have the background for it, i would definitely recomend you hire someone to do it for you. Other than that, i love it.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Installed R/O unit in about 2-hours. No problems

Installed this unit in about 2-hours and no leaks.  Just follow the directions, read first, and ther should be no problem.  Facucet was very easy to install from the top of the sink.  It takes about 24hrs before you can drink water, need to purge the system first.  Water tastes great and very good pressure.

This system really works and removed all the bad odors and taste

It took me two and half hours reading and installing this system, but it was worth the time. The Sears salesman was really nice and helpful at the Richardson Square, Texas, no pressure sale pitch and gave us plenty of time to decide. You will need your reading glasses to read the small print instruction. The instruction is pretty straight forward and cut and dry. Be sure to push the compression fitting in all the way.

Pros:

1. The Nitrate test shows 0 ppm after 24 hours, two testing strips come with kit. 2. Good water pressure
3. No odors or bad taste

Cons:
1. After two weeks, the post-filter started to leak. I called the Customer Support, trouble shoot over the over phone and figure out that the post filter needs replacing. However, the part hot line number didn't have the part, I had to return back to the Sears store where I purchase this system and ask for Pre/Post filters, which they had to comp the purchase and I need to return the bad filter to the store.
2. Pre/Post filters cost $44 for the pair
3. After installation, you need to run your water line for 24 hours plus 4 hours, before you can start drinking. This will flush you system and calibrate everything.

For what it worth, I love this system. We cook, eat and drink from this water line every day.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great product and good value

The installation took about an hour or so and went well. The unit came with everything you need to install. The instructions were clear and should be read and understood before starting as it will make the job much easier.

On the positive side, the water taste great and it is good to know that some of the contaminates are filtered out.

On the down side if you want to call it that, is that you have to let it purge for 24 hours after installation before use. I bleached the hoses before I installed them just to be sure they were clean. Other than that I followed the instructions.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

RO Membrane is available from Whirlpool - 5/14/11

This drinking water system works great, and the taste of the water is fine also. I, too, had issues replacing the R.O. membrane. Sears Parts was unable to provide pricing and availability for the membrane filter (#42-38577). This drinking water system is actually made by Whirlpool, for Kenmore. You can buy the R.O. membrane using Whirlpool #WHEERM. I was able to get the R.O. filter from a Sears competitor for $52 as of 5/14/11. As a side note, it's unfortunate that Sears Parts had no clue about this cross-reference and that I had to spend an hour searching online figuring this out. Hopefully this helps others who've had difficulty buying the R.O. filter.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Good water, bad leaking protection mechanism...

I got the this system about 2 years ago.  Replaced pre and post filters 3-4 times.  Today when we got home from work, water was all over our kitchen and living room area.  I found out water was leaking from the top of the system where the filters located.  I think the RO filter caused the problem.  There is almost no where to get a replacemnt for RO filter.

Summary:

1. Good water

2. Bad leaking protection mechanism

3. Poor part availability

Great Water, but Professional Installation Recommended

The device immediately change the quality of water in the house.  Although we had a minor concern about the size of the tank, it provided an ample for usual household use.  We've never run low on water.  The flow is a bit slow, but no worse than the filtered bar sink water faucet that this replaced.  With fairly heavy usage, we noted from tasting the water that the filters needed a change in 5 months.  The only complaint was with the compression fittings, which leaked a bit upon installation.  A plumber was able to fix the problem, but ... it did ultimately require more than home handyman skills to install.
