Exceeded my Great Expectations
I bought the Kenmore 7800 BTU AC based on owner reviews which praised how quietly it runs. I can tell you that this unit is QUIET! I installed it in my TV room and only about five feet from my recliner. The TV is across the room but the AC is so quiet that I hardly know it is on and it does not interfere with the TV at all. The user reviews did give me some pause in that several commented they had difficulty in installing it due to unclear directions. Because of those comments I took great care to read the directions carefully and follow them precisely. Probably because of that attention to detail (thanks to reading of other's problems), I had absolutely no installation problems. I originally planned to purchase the 10,000 BTU unit but was concerned that it may weigh more than I could comfortably handle by myself. I am glad I got the 7800 BTU as I believe the larger unit could make the room too cold.

Noisy or Quiet? The Truth
Both, and I'll tell you why. They had the model in the store set up to run, so I turned it on, and indeed it was quiet compared to other a/c's I had been researching (LG, Frigidaire, Sharp) I was so happy to find a quiet a/c for a reasonable price. Installation: I like the fact that it has a removable metal sleeve, so you can install just the sleeve first and then slide the unit into place. However the included screws DO NOT fit well into the pre-existing holes. The holes are way too small so you will need a lot of torque to get them in properly. Other than that it was fairly easy to install. Everything is set and I turn it on, the compressor kicks in and BOOM, my whole wall begins to vibrate with a deep sounding bass. Kinda like those loud cars with stereo systems, but a constant low hum. Because the store model was not mounted, this was an unexpected effect. My house is single wall construction mind you, so if you have dual-wall, the sound may be dampened a bit. But boy does this thing vibrate. If there is ANYTHING loose on your wall or on the unit itself, you will get buzzing noises from the deep vibrations. The fan is not noisy on the low setting, and only marginally louder on high, it is the compressor that produces the most noise. In conclusion, if you have a good mount with a solid dual wall construction and nothing that can vibrate, yes this a/c is very quiet. If you have thinner walls, it can sound like constant deep stereo bass and will rattle anything that is loose. I can see where the disparity between reviews exist. Some say super quiet, some say incredibly noisy. I've attempted to explain why. Hope this helps your purchases!

Good, cool air, low noise.

Got this to cool an apartment, now it's permanently installed in my living room wall. Slide out chassis is nice for through-wall installation. Works great and doesn't make it too difficult to hear TV.

Superb Kenmore A/C

I bought this unit for my son's apartment over four years ago and it is still going strong. I know, because he moved out & I now live in the unit myself! It is in the bedroom; it is highly efficient and cools very well. Noise level for a window unit is moderate and not unreasonable; this coming from a person sensitive to noise. Best price and investment I've made in quite some time. I give this item a 5-star Plus rating.

Great A/C with a remote and Energy Star compliance

I purchased and installed this air conditioner over the weekend of 8/21/2010 after getting it on sale from my local sears for $179. It sounds like any air conditioner I have ever heard but has a very powerful fan that shoots cold air into the middle of my office.

I installed the unit in wall instead of a window. The body and innards are easily separated with 4 screws and it's designed to have the guts slide out on a nice tray. Loved that because I was easily able to frame and seal it into the wall and then slide the guts right back in without having to maneuver all 40 lbs of it at once.

Also it says no extension cord, but you can definitely use an extension cord as long as it's the right gauge. Just use a dedicated circuit and make sure it's at least 12 gauge.

Our Kenmore 7,800 BTU is fantastic, copes with 104 degree temps!

The Kenmore 7,800 BTU is easy to install because you install the lightweight case not the enitre unit. Easy to level, even with aluminium storm frames in place. Once the case is perfect, just slide in the unit. Our windows are old, dormered and have storm/screen inserts.

We bought our air conditioner just before an east coast heatwave. The outside temperature has peaked for three days at over 100 degrees. But our dining room (where the unit is) stays cool even though we were right on the edge of square feet. Further, the dining room door often is not closed -- stupid, but practical -- and the room stays within one degree of set temperature. The operating noise is not offensive, we can hear music with only modest adjustments to volume. Could not be happier!

Fearing our storm windows and small window size, we bought a free-standing air-con last year for our living room -- at twice the price and a huge sacrifice of floor space. This unit is better. The room is the same size. Great deal!

Kenmore 7800 BTU Single Room A/C - Simply put, WE LOVE IT!

We referred to **************** for a breakdown on room A/C'S.  So we went with their recommendation and we are glad we did.  We had a 6000 BTU a/c from Maytag, which did not cool well and it always had noise.  We absolutely would suggest this model.  I can actually sleep peacefully now.  We called ahead to the store to make sure it was available and went to pick it up.  Thank you Sears.  This is "The place" for your next appliance!

This Kenmore 7800 BTU air conditioner works great!

This unit works great.  It cools very well, and I love the energy saver mode for when I am not home!  The only issue I had was with installation, which would be much easier with 2 people ( as recommended).  Having to unassemble the unit before installing and re-assembling it was a hassle.  Now that it is in and running, I love it!  Took me about 2 hours to install.

Absolute Junk!

I bought this air conditioner 18 months ago and today it went into the trash. The unit cycles on and off but no longer cooled the room. It left me and my family feeling like we were inside an oven. I called about warranty service and was told the unit was no longer under warranty. Kenmore no longer make the quality and value products that it used to.

Excellent Unit with Great Controls and Superior Cooling

I researched this unit and purchased it 2 years ago. It has continually been an above average performing unit and I am about to purchase another of the same. I have been very happy with the thermostat consistency, ease of use, and especially the timer that allows me to set and forget so that I can go to sleep without concern. I highly recommend this unit. It will absolutely freeze me out of my 12 X12 bedroom and I originally used it in a 16 X 16 Bedroom with similar results.

A best buy for certain.

No cold air

Bought this unit based on a recent evaluation by ****************.  First time buying an a/c and I regret this purchase.  Installation was a challenge but managed after an hour or two - no biggie.  The front panel won't close completely (don't know why; poor workmanship?) and it blows the same air temp whether on a/c, energy saver, or ordinary fan setting.  NO cold air whatsoever!  On the upside, it's not too loud - hey, an expensive, large, heavy but quiet fan!  Without a car in NYC, will have to mail it back.  What a drag.  Should have purchased different brand from local big box retailer.

Missing parts and very difficult to install

This is 3rd Kenmore a/c I've owned/installed, but this one took the longest by far, in part because it was missing the installation instructions/owner's manual, and some parts, including the drain plug.  I had to pre-seat the screws for the side wings since Kenmore painted the unit after it drilled the holes, so the holes were "clogged" and it was impossible to install the wings w/o pre-screwing.  The front panel does not seem to fit properly since it rattles of and on unless you lightly smack it with your palm. I cannot imagine an average homeowner being able to install this unit. I have lifelong mechanical/electrical experience and it took me almost 2 hours to install, with lots of cursing.  After install it did work fairly well, cooling our 500 sq. foot bedroom down to 68 degrees within about 45 minutes -- while it was about 90 degrees outside.

This Kenmore air conditioner has cooled my upstairs well.

I was pleasantly surprised, since my previous Kenmore was 12000 BTU and this one is only 7800.  The newer, energy-efficient air conditioners seem to be bulkier and the new 12000 BTU units woudn't fit in my window (measure and check the sizes BEFORE you get it home and make the discovery!). 90% of the time it is quiet, but the compressor does randomly vibrate, which could be a problem if it's right by your bed. My space is large and odd-shaped, so I find that using a fan on the other side of the room to help w/ the air circulation helps the air conditioner work better.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Kenmore Air Conditioner 7800 BTUs-easy to install, pretty quiet

After reading reviews concerning this air conditioner, I found that some of them were not accurate.  I am female and in my mid-fifties and I installed it by myself.  If the instructions are followed, you pretty much can't go wrong.  I appreciated that I was able to install the cabinet first and then the inner works so that I wouldn't have to keep pulling out the air conditioner if something was not done right.  Although the innards were a little heavy, once I had them centered it was relatively easy to slide everything in.  One suggestion I have is that you have a short phillips-head screwdriver to put the screws back into the sides of the unit once installation is complete.

I am a big Kenmore fan and had to replace my previous air conditioner (also a Kenmore) because of flooding and I just naturally gravitated to the brand that had served me well in the past; I was not disappointed.  I would like to suggest that it wouldn't hurt to have an extra screw or 2 included, I can be a klutz sometimes and drop screws, nuts, bolts, etc.  Also, the weatherstripping that is supposed to be stuck to the underside of the window is very stretchy and sticky, so be careful with it after you take the paper off.

All in all, this air conditioner was worth every cent I spent on it and I hope it will last as long as my previous one.  I can't comment on the savings in energy usage because I haven't had the unit long enough to know how much I am saving, but I can say that I do use the energy saving features.  I would recommend this air conditioner to friends and family without reservations.

Excellent Product - Needs a Better Grill

I bought two Kenmore 7,800 BTU air conditioners and they work great. They are on the third floor of my house, which is basically a finished attic where the heat can be pretty bad. They keep a very precise temperature and have ample fan power when needed, and they are Energy Star compliant. The electronic controls provide versatile functionality and are easy to use. My only complaint would be that this model could use a better grill, as it can break when taking it on/off the unit.

Good one so far

Works well, good fan capacity to cool a large area.

Using to cool a 500 square foot garage and doing a fine job of it.

Quiet and does seems to be energy efficient.

Cabinet and plastic front grill are really Cheap made.

My concern is, I had the same type in the 10,000 btu size and it worked good too, for two seasons.

When I started using it this year, compressor started vibrating, making noise, and cycling off and on constantly.

Certainly hope this one lasts longer.

Kenmore 7,800 BTU air condiitioner

Pretty quiet, I have a TV 6 ft. away and I rarely have to turn up the sound. Easily sleep through the night with it on. Cools quickly, the timer is a great feature to have when I come home from work and saves energy. Slide out chassis makes it easy to install.

The instructions can be confusing if you don't read them first. Once the chassis is installed you must then insert the ac unit. However, there is a foam seal on the the chassis that can be a pain in aligning properly when sliding the ac unit.

Very good unit I would recommend this.

This Kenmore 7,8000 BTU Air Conditioner is so powerful and great

This air conditioner was great! However installing it took some time because my boyfriend did not read the manual instructions; but we figure it out easily. Our wall opening was a bit bigger on top so we had to think of a way to seal it quickly. We then use duck tape over it all.

When we turn it on to try it out; cool air blow out immediately! It was so cool and relaxing. Then we try using it with the remote and on the engery saver mode which was kool to use! So when we go to sleep each night, the remote is on my night stand by the bed for easy access!

worth a try

First unit I got did not come with a remorte, so I had to return just to get another one. and the screw is made right so that it is hard to get it in and out.  over all, it's cheap made, and hey, it is cheap.  BUT, it is quiet compare to any other window unit I encountered and it does cool the air, although, I will have to wait for the Electric bill to be happy about it or not.  I do like the auto temp control.  We have a baby sleep in the room and were very concerned about waking him up, but he is sleeping good, so this thing does the job.  First unit I got also made a bigger noise where the panel is attached to the metal part and second one did not have any of that noise.  so my recommendation is, if you found the unit was not made right, return it and get another, it is not a Japanese, so Quality Control is not as good.  you may have to look for a good batch among them. if you find a good one, you will be happy with it. if you find it bad, return them.  it's free anyhow.  Got to sears and do not get it shipped, if you get it shipped, you may have to ship them back and that is going to cost you.

Over all, it does do a pretty good job.  It is made cheap but it was cheap to begin with.  Happy enough and I will buy another if I need one.

Cools off the bedroom very quickly.

When I picked up my unit at the customer pick-up area, I noticed the box was a bit damaged, and one of the packing straps was already removed.  When i got it home, I realized that some packing staples had been removed. I should have returned it then and there, but I went ahead and removed it from the box.  It was then that I relaized that this unit had been previously opened and damaged.  The plastic interior casing was cracked in a few places, the condensor grid was dinged in a few places.  I made the mistake of installing it anyway, and when it was turned on it made some unusual noises.  To make a long story short, I removed it, repacked it,  and returned it to the store for an exchange. There were no hassels at all, and the new unit came undamaged and runs fine.  I have a 12+16 bedroom which gets very hot since my neighbor removed a large shade tree last year.  My old 5000BTU unit could no longer do the job, but this one seems to be the perfect output for the room.  My only gripes about this unit would be the somewhat confusing installation instructions, along with the fact that once the unit is removed from the housing, the weathersripping is unavoidably damaged.

In closing, unless you are getting a discount for a previously opened unit, do not accept the box if it appears damaged or previously opened.  Chances are, as in my case, that it was.

The Kenmore 7,800 BTU-AC is quiet and cools well.

Local Sears and ****** stores were sold out of this unit and could not say when new product would arrive, probably due to a good Consumer Report review. I purchased the product from Sears online and it was delivered in a few days. When the instructions say you neet 15" vertical space to mount the unit they mean it. I mounted the unit in a small steel building with a small window and would have had to send it back except for the assistance of a close friend. We actually had to break out and outer sliding window and remove its frame to install this unit and were unable to use the mounting brackets supplied and drilled and screwed the cabinet to the window frame for support. It does cool the space quickly..

what a beautiful working unit, Kenmore model #76081 7800 BTU

My old unit in my bedroom gave up, so i had to buy a new one dint want one that made alot of noise like my previous LG so I started shopping around online and reading the reviews. pick this one even though a couple reviews complain about it being noisey. took a chance went to sears and and purchased it. i installed it the same afternoon, when i turned it on that first night  i must admit that it was noisy and i was all ready to return it. i fgured if some of the reviews say it was quiet, either i got a faulty one  or i should try reinstalling it, so the next day i took it down and reinstall it made sure the unit was tightly mounted  and all srews were tighten properly. guesss what the unit is working beautifully now. it is quiet what little noise u hear is expected, no need to turn the volume on my television up. so for those customers complaing that t is noisy, make sure the installation is properly done.

the features are great. i like the fact that when i leave for work in the evening that i can set it to turn on at least 1-2 hours before i reach home. as i enter my bedroom after work it is cool and nice.
