Poor Design, Missing parts

Product is very frustrating in that it it very difficult to push; often sinks into soft dirt. If you pull it, the spikes do not go in as deeply. Handle seems designed for someone less than 5 feet tall. Bolts that hold the handle together wind up in the way of the cinder block - they are too long. (I had to turn them around so the bolt sticks out away from the block and can potentially scrape someone.) The plate and handle that hold the block are not long or wide enough to properly hold either of the 2 blocks I had. I was missing the cotter pins to hold the axle; I had to stick bent paper clips in it until I can get to a store to buy some. No written directions - pictures only. I own an Agri Fab Lawn Sweeper that I am happy with - this is a disappointment.

complete junk

complete junk, i bought this because it was cheap thinking that it would probable take time to aerate yard with this but i am laid off and have the time. After i assembled the product and tested it out in the yard i realized that the product isnt designed properly, you cant push the aerator with a cement brick on top because it just gets stuck in the ground and doesnt want to move. If you had a flat ,,, very soft lawn it might work . I WOULD NOT BUY RECOMEND THIS PRODUCT

Spike aerator not worth the money

The 16" spike aerator is not worth the $60 (which included shipping). The directions on how to put it together has the screws facing the wrong way so the cinderblock would not fit into the holder. Even after the screws were turned around, it was difficult to make it fit, so we had to retrofit it with different screws. So basically the area the block is supposed to fit in is not big enough. The block was not heavy enough to adequately cut into our grass. Ended up putting a sand bag on it held on by bungie cords. It cuts grooves, but is hard to push. I should have looked at the description of it closer before purchasing. Definitely regret getting it, but am using it and hope it helps my lawn.

Agri-Fab 16 in. Spike Aerator

This product is a spike aerator and puts holes into the ground (it does not pull dirt plugs from the ground), it worked fine for me but in my opinion it has some major design defects and are as follows:

1.  The aerator gets much deeper if you push it rather than pull it, however handle is weak and you have to push from the sides of the handle not to bend the handle.  Pushing the aerator is much harder than pulling.

2.  The handle has curved bar at the bottom, I assembled the aerator per the instructions and the curved bar (not sure why is it there) restricts the aerator from going deep into the ground and will only let the spikes get about 1.5 inches (approx).  I physically cut off the curved bar as it was unnecessary and was able to get maximum penetration.

3.  The outer frame of the aerator actually slices into the ground at certain angles, which the manufacturer will probably say to not use the aerator at the angle but it is not realistic to expect all users to comply as everyone has different ground types.   This extra slicing is not beneficial to the grass as it rips and tears the grass (it is not a clean slice) and also effectively stops the aerator due to the increased drag making it sometimes impossible to push (pulling is fine).

Also there were no instructions on how to use this product in the box or on the companies website, only how to assemble the product.  Some of my design defects could have been resolved with a simple how-to instruction manual, but instead I just figured it out as I used the aerator.

I actually plan to use this aerator every year, I like the spikes and the depth they penetrate the ground, and the price was right.  However I am going to make some modification to it that are necessary in my opinion.  I will make a new handle for it from solid scrap iron rods I have available and am I am going to cut off the excessive frame that drags into the ground.

These modifications are not necessary, but as a DIY handyman I am going to go ahead and do them so I can maximize the effectiveness of this aerator.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Good in small areas

Get more plastic bushings right away, they wear out fast especially if you make turns. The Agri-Fab does what it says it will do, make slits in the lawn for air, seed and fertilizer to reach the roots. Pushing is difficult but possible, dragging it is easier especially if weighted. Best used after a rain or light watering. Mine is 3 or 4 years old now.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Don't waste your bucks!

I agree with the other negative reviews. Construction is weak and flimsy. It dug in 2 inches at best. Watering the lawn for an hour made little difference. Look eslewhere for a quality aerator.

Awful

The handles bent on the first day that I had it and I was not able to put enough weight on it to penetrate significantly into Texas clay. Even when wet. Maybe if I was aerating fine sand...

I AGREE WITH LARRYWACO

It's cumbersome and heavy to push/pull around. Even if it worked, I don't think the spikes would go deep enough to really do much good. However, I didn't wet the grass, so I will soak my lawn and give it another chance.

It does work

It does what it says it does. Don't listen to the other review, as long as you water your lawn beforehand (as stated in the instructions) the ground will be soft enough.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Poor

I purchased this item today and am very disappointed. Unless your soil is very soft, it is nearly impossible to push this thing around the yard. And if you are aerating, chances are your soil is NOT soft. Save your money and pay a lawn service to do it for you. This is a waste of money.
