This was a Craftsman branded mulching kit that we purchased at a Hometown Store. We were told it might fit our Husqvarna riding lawn mower but if not too bring it back for a full refund. Btw, the 2 Homestores I've purchased at have the best customer service! Anyway back to the mulching kit. It was easy to install by following the provided directions. Upon mowing with the new mulching kit it really made the lawn look beautiful. The lawn was fairly long and the grass clippings are now cut up so small they no longer sit on top of the lawn and deaden the grass underneath.
Great product, rugged and excellent fitment. Has to be put together but not hard. Springs are very strong but may lighten up as the rubber stretch. Look for coupons and get at a great price! Would definitely recommend.
Agree with comment on how tight the tie-down straps are -- both are stretched past their max length. Wonder how long before they either pull out the screws in the plastic guard or rip through the holes in the straps themselves. They definitely hold the guard in place.
A good mulching kit is essential for your lawn and also for the leaves in the fall. Don't waste all the nutrients by bagging it up, just mulch it with this kit and add to your top-soil level. This kit is very easy to install and functions as advertised. I recommend lightly sharpening the blades with a hand file for best results as the paint that is on the blades from the factory impacts the effectiveness of the mulching. I have found the mulching function works best at 3in cut and lower. Anything over this level creates an air gap in your mower deck and the trimmings tend to discharge out the front of the mower. I like to mow at a longer cut (for the health of the lawn) so this is a minor concern otherwise I would give a 5 star rating. This issue most likely is a mower specific issue (deck) so you may have different results with your mower and type of grass you cut. It is also nice to be able to remove the stock discharge chute. With a large deck (54in) the chute sticks out another foot which can be cumbersome during close landscaping mowing. The mulching kit allows for removal of the chute and a more maneuverable tractor is the result!

My husband and I purchased this kit to install on our Craftsman garden tractor once the snow is gone the spring. We have a similar kit on our other mower deck and think it helps with making the grass clippings and leaves much smaller. The kits are easy to install but are somewhat pricey. We decided to buy this kit because it was marked down due to the Sears Hardware store in our neighborhood going out of business.
Tried to install mulch kit on our mower, but found that the straps provided needed Superman to stretch them. The hole for the front strap is in front of the mower deck wheel and not accessible. I know how to fix the problems, but, I'm wondering, it's a shame someone didn't try to install the kit during the planning phase.
The blades seem perfectly adequate, however regarding the plastic mulching cover, on my 54" GT6000, the forward latch spring assembly has nothing to attach to and hangs loose. The whole attachment scheme seems designed by 6-year-olds. Somehow the cover seems to stay in place anyhow. Nonetheless, weird and not at all polished or thought out. It's just barely recommendable since it seems to work despite it's shortcomings.
Purchased for the YT 4500 Craftsman tractor, and although not given much use yet, they are less noisy and better balanced than the bagging knives that came with the tractor. They mulch very well. Very happy with the product, but disappointed that it wasn't included with the purchase of the tractor.

I bought this kit I 2010 .Im still using it at the end of 2012. I have never sharpened it yet. It's going strong for three seasons now cutting 2 scares of lawn every week for the entire spring summer and falls for 3 yrs stright. I don't have to rakeor puck up any grass after I mulch. It just crushes the grass to find bits which is good as manure for the lawn .

The blades work fine and mulch quite well. Problem, the mulch plug does not attach like the instructions say. There is no hole to attach the front rubber on the mower. I had to drill a hole for the hook to go into for attachment. Also, the rear rubber is supposed fit around the spacer on the 1/4 inch bolt. That does not work properly, there is no clearence for the hook to go around the spacer.I am a retired Ironworker so I made everything fit the correct way.
I purchased this kit to eliminate the need for raking and bagging. Installation was straight forward, but the blades were rusted in the kit. (Cleaned with wire wheel). The shroud design was poor due to the mounting. Front wheel interferes with the spring clip and not very secure. Hit something in the lawn and it pops off. Rear mounting not much better. I just hate having to re-engineer things that should have been tested prior to marketing. On the plus side, it mulched fine.

I live on a 4 acre wooded lot. So I have bunches of leaves. I bought a yard sweeper last year but it was too much work. My brother lives on 4 acres beside me. He told me that he just mulches his leaves but he has a $6000 comercial mower. I was worried how well it would work on my 54" wide deck. I was pleasantly suprised. These blades actually ran much quieter and smoother. I can't explain why unless the pitch of the blade make it better balanced. My grass was a little high and lots of leaves. One time over it at a fast pass left almost no detectable debris. A few specks of leaves about 1/2" in diameter and no detectable grass clippings. In the summer I mow my grass in rows and mow back over the rows several times. Not anymore, I'm leaving this mulch kit on year round. I've only used it twice so far so I don't know how well the blades will hold up but if they get me thru the fall with all my leaves they'll be well worth the money. I am not a writer and don't usually write reviews but I've tried mulching kits before on other mowers, nothing compares to these and I wanted to share how well they worked for me. I just wish I hadn't bought the new grass blades beforehand, I'll probably never put them back on.
If the yard is the least bit moist, thick or long (pick one) the mulch deck will bog down the 26hp Kohler Courage engine in my Craftsman tractor, clump heavily, and miss spots. I must mow very slowly if these perfect conditions don't exist. It leaves the deck filled with clumped grass and must be cleaned out often. Mowing with the mulch kit is messy; grass escapes from behind the front tires and covers my feet and legs.
