Craftsman 30 in, 420 cc 6 speed Riding Mower

I read the reviews was a little skeptical but noticed that a good number of low reviews were really not that bad when i read them. I bought the mower and it was delivered Aug, 17 2012. The two gentlemen that delivered it were very pleasant and quite knowlegable. They walked me through it started it stopped it. Asked me to try and then stayed while I started to mow lawn. It seems durable cut well. My backyard is like the moon but it handled the lunar lanscape well. I'm very happy. I thought it would fit through my 31 in  door not big enough need to add a bigger basement door and I will. For the cost and a small yard you can not go wrong.

We bought this tractor in may to bow less than a 1/2 acre.  It now won't start and when it does it smokes like it is burning oil.  This is a bad product.  Service has been out once and is now scheduled to come again.  I would not recommend anyone buying this product

buyers beware please

My wife purchased this product for me and it has been nothing but trouble. I asked after she bought it who made the engine and was told it was a Kohler or Briggs. Come to find out it is a china engine. It won't start and now I am not sure what to do. we are retired and live on a fixed income and now have a tractor that is useless.

The answer to starting problems.

I bought this Riding Lawn Mower this spring and also found that the Mower was Hard to start, But I found out If you put the Gas Lever all the way up to the Choke position, it starts right away. So if you want this Lawn Mower to start right away, put the gas lever all the way up to the choke position.   I haven't had any problem starting starting the engine all summer.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Safety switches

I've always trusted Crafteman tools, etc, so when I needed a new riding lawn mower I went to Sears. Bought the 420cc 6 speed mower, got it home and it would only start about half the time I was going to use it. I went back to Sears to see how to return it. They asked me to try calling repair service. I live out West so there is no Sears repairman. Next day the trained repair man came and admitted that he had never worked on one of these but with in 5 mins found the problem. There is a "safety switch" on the bagger. If the bagger is not seated tight the mower won't start. I have now read another review about the screw placed on that switch. Just a note: New mowers will not mow in reverse, there again its called "safety". Perhaps we have too much safety??

I would recommend this product to a friend.

RER1000, 25000, Poor Engine Quality

I purchased this RER1000 to replace a Craftsman front wheel self propelled mower which got too expensive to repair. It was the first riding mower I ever purchased. after extensive research based on price and quality (Craftsman quality) I chose this mower over the more expensive Snapper RERs. I also purchased the 5 year extended service agreement. I purchased it on Sunday and it was delivered on Wednesday, not bad. The delivery person started it, then I went back to the office. That evening I started it by it was running too rich, made a lot of smoke and noise, then when I engaged the blades it stalled. I called Sear and scheduled a tech to come on Saturday. Good scheduling. however I decided that if it gave me this much trouble to begin with then I did not want more problems. After a few more hours research online I found out that the engine was made in China and not a B&S. This caused me to return it to Sears. The return process was no problem. Therefore I purchased Craftsman 28856.

Looking for the Mulch plug (3352)

If you were like me, finding the mulch plug is difficult to obtain.  However, MTD makes a similar one.  Works GREAT.

You get what you pay for.  I you read a bad review, that will most likely leave a bad idea in your head.   I bought this regardless of all the good and bad reviews. If you cannot handle the drawbacks (from other reviews), do not waste your time; most likely you will have the same experience.

I am a firm believer in trying things out first hand.  It is a good inexpensive ridding lawn mower It is very light and easy to handle (which some many not like).  The levers, you can get accustomed to the locations.

I bought the bagger with the lawn mower works good.  Only drawback to the design, it should not have the mesh top.

When I mow my neighbors yard, I put the mulch plug in. It takes about 3 minutes to remove the bagging tube and put the mulch plug in.  No issues with the mulching.

Starting the mower does smoke, but then again that is because the choke only has one position.  Maybe the next design should have FULL OPEN, HALF OPEN, CLOSED.  That will solve that issue.

Overall, I am happy with the purchase!  BTW, I bypassed the switch to mow in reverse.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

IF IT DOESNT START

Guys the chute has a safty switch that will not allow the mower to start if it is not pressed. This mower does not do a good job of getting that button pressed. So, i drove a screw right through the plastic piece and out the other side so that when the cover is on it pushes the button all the way in. OH YESSSS starts every time and starts in seconds. One happy dude.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Agree with other reviews

I agree with some of the other reviews on this product. It cuts good but you can't mow in reverse and it is really hard to start. We have cut our 3/4 acre yard 6 times and we bought a vew gas can the day we bought the mower. We have also never used any gas that has ethanol In it. We have really tried to do the right thing with this mower and are very disappointed at this point. I think I am going to take my neighbor's advice and return this one and go to ***** because they have the same product with a different motor.

JUNK, JUNK, JUNK

BEWARE of this piece of garbage. Worked fine first five or six times I used. Had issue with it not starting. Waited 3 weeks for Technician to come to my house. He "fixed" in a few minutes and LAUGHINGLY told me it was a common issue. Poor design with safety switch on discharge chute. he "tightened" and it started up. The FIRST time I tried to cut grass, it went 30 feet and backfired. Called "service" (use term loosely) and was told that perhaps I could hold switch in. HELLO, I PAID NEARLY A THOUSAND DOLLARS FOUR MONTHS AGO!  they have scheduled another "service" visit in two weeks. In the meantime I have to use my old push mower. I am 65 years old and bought this piece of crap to alleviate my work effort. EVENTUALLY they will fix or take this garbage back. In the meantime, I will vent to all levels of management starting with the CEO.

Please read the reviews

I went through the reviews and honestly didn't pay attention before I bought this product because it was a Craftsman and I have always had a good experience.  This is one that you really need to pay attention to.  The product is ok and no it doesn't mow in reverse but that is not the issue.  This thing just will not start.  I have charged the battery because it took so long to start.  Sears really needs to test this kind of a product.  I am returning this thing.

Sears should rethink this product

first of all let me start by saying I like the tractor. It cuts good and will fit through the gate. I DON'T like the motor. It smokes and is hard to start. It doesn't matter if it's hot or cold. The second issue is it won't mow in reverse. And lastly I can't get a mulch plug. I have called service to come out and take A look at the starting issue. If he can't fix that I will return the unit.

This product need help

My wife purchased this product for my father's day present.  When she brought it home it wouldn't start. The service guy came out and found a bad switch or something and it worked.  It now won't start again.  Sears has said it will be 8 days to get here.  I had my local dealer take a look at this thing because I didn't want to wait that long and he says its an engine issue.  I asked if he could fix and and he replied no because it was a china engine and he couldn't get parts.  Be ware of this product.  I think I am going to return this one!!!

This machine is a mess

I purchased this mower the 3rd week of may to mow a 1 acre yard.  The yard is flt and only has two trees.  Since then the service tech has been out here twice and the know on the shift lever and the engagement lever has come off.  The tech has come out here twice because the thing wouldn't start.  I am not happy with this machine and either the motor is a bad design or Sears is not trained correctly to repair them.  I am taking these back.

CRAFTSMAN 30 IN. 420 CC 6 SPEED

I bought this tractor mower a few weeks ago.  As a retiree I was tired waiting for a cool weather to cut the grass.  Now, it doesnot matter.  It's fun and now I cut all the retirees grass in the neighbor hood.  This tractor mower is beyond expectations.  I love it and it's fun.  Check me on Utube in a couple days, "Happy Hawaiian!"

Good overall small rider

Bought about three weeks ago here is my take on this riding mower.

First it has a chinese built engine. Alot of people complain about this. I see no problem as the builder of this engine has alot of experience and i would say is comparable to anymotor built here. My mower runs smooth but is rather loud. That is my only complaint.
The trans is proven and bulletproof from what i hear. It is nice and easy to shift. When starting you have to be careful in lower gears because it will lurch hard on takeoff.

The mowing cut quality is ok, not as good as my nieghbors 42" deck mowers but this i expected as a 30" single blade cannot lift the grass as well as a larger deck. Make sure your tires are at the correct pressure and the deck is levelled.

The build quality is good. though there is alot of plastic.

Steering is good too but there is some play off center. Out of everything i have wrote about this is the one thing i do not like. To me it makes the mower seem cheap.

Overall if you have a small yard i reccomend this mower.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

The delivery guy was great in showing us how to safely and effectively use the mower.  But the gearshift is awkward between the legs and the steering wheel wobbles.

Craftsman 30 in.420cc 6 speed riding mower-Don't waste your $$$$

We purchased this and learned we had no key when we arrived home... and the rear fender had been tightened too much and was broken.  It also would not start.  Called for service, only to find it had not been assembled correctly so the safety button was not making contact.  Service was great and he shared a lot of tips for care of this equipment.  Then the fun began.  It would not stay in gear.  The transmission kept jumping gears.  I set it on 1 and before I knew it it was on 5 and flying.  It almost gave me whiplash every time I went to use the brake...not very smooth.  Went to take it from forward to neutral or reverse and the knob came off in my hand.  A piece of junk.  Promptly returned it and purchased a 38"Husqvarna from ******.  It works great.
