Great tmower
I bought this mower in June 2008 after my 9 year old MTD went out of commission. My neighbor had just purchased this mower and I borrowed it while I waited on a part for my MTD. I liked the mower so much I bought one the following week! The mower starts smoothly and cuts evenly. I recommend the deluxe or plus deck with four wheels. It hugs the ground but easily goes over contours in the lawn thus keeping the blades in contact with the grass. I heard that this mower is slow in backup mode but I have not found that to be the case. The chair sits nice and high and it handles well including turns. It has plenty of power. This is my first mower with a Kohler engine and I am pleasantly surprised. Liek all products they only last as long as you care for them and maintain them. This mower is definitely a good buy especially for someone as picky about their lawn as I am.

Hidden Costs
I purchased this tractor in September of 2007. Consumer Reports rated it very high for its mowing capabilities. I COMPLETELY agree with this rating for this mower cuts the grass VERY evenly. I can not say enough good things about the appearance of the lawn after mowing. The motor always starts quickly and shuts off nicely. The motor does surge at first, but quickly evens out. Some of these mowers were returned to my Sears store due to more noticeable surge problems. The hydrostat runs smoothly whether mowing or dethatching. One concern I have about the hydrostat is with the belt that connects the motor to the hydrostat. I noticed the tractor really slowing down this spring of 2008 compared to when I used it briefly in the fall of 2007. Since the mower has a 2 year warranty, I had Sears visit the mower to look at this and a few other concerns. The Sears mechanic said the belt probably stretched. I was really surprised to hear a belt would stretch after only mowing a few times in Oct last year and mowing 2 to 4 times a month since April of 2008. When he removed the belt, the old one was an inch or so longer than the new one. The belt cost $28 but was replaced free since the mower has a two year warranty. What really CONCERNS me is that this drive belt has no adjustment on it. Once it stretches, the tractor slows down more and more. A Sears's repairman said these tractors never had an adjustment for the drive belt. Every other mower I have owned has had an adjustment to take the looseness out of a stretching belt. Not this one. My old mower has had the same belt for years! I guess one has to get used to the tractor going slower, or put on a new belt every year of so. If you like to cut your grass fast, be prepared to replace the belt every year or so. The bagger for this tractor had some less than positive reviews from previous reviewers in 07 and before. More than a few folks mentioned how the rubber ring in the hood of the bagger that accepts the tube from the deck has issues. Unless one is VERY careful, that ring will come out of its slot. The rubber ring comes out MUCH easier than it goes back into the hood. I have learned to be very careful so that it does not pop out. My previous riding mower, a Honda, NEVER had issues with anything falling apart or coming out of place. A bigger concern about the bagger is something I don't remember reading about in a review. If the tube connecting the mower deck to the bagger gets clogged up, clearing the clog is less than fun. The tube that connects the deck to the bagger is composed of two pieces. When you separate the upper piece of the tube from the lower piece, you have to be VERY careful that the rubber ring in the bagger's hood does not pop out. The length of the lower part of the tube is longer than the length of my arm. So unless you have really long arms, cleaning out the clogged tube is not fun. On my Honda, the lower part of the tube was shorter than the upper part. So clearing a clog was easy. The lower part also had a clear see through portion in the lower tube so one could see if the lower tube was clogging. I agree with a previous review who said the hood does rattle. The hood is flimsy but his solution of putting on rubber pads would work well. The hood is easy to remove to work on the motor. My dad likes the step through feature of the mower, but he says the mower rides like a Model T Ford car from the last century. This mower is not a smooth rider but the bouncing around is normal for a mid range tractor. Long story short, this mower cuts the grass beautifully. I really DON'T like the bagger that Craftsman makes for this tractor. I am disappointed with the drive belt stretching so quickly. If one would have to pay a person to install the belt, the labor would have been close to $200 according to the warranty receipt given to me. Thanks for taking the time to read these comments. I hope you find them useful to you in making a wise buying decision. Personally, next time I will not buy a tractor with the concerns I shared.

Excellent Light Duty Lawnmower

For those that aren't aware, this model did come with a 6 speed transmission (which is the model I bought). I've read a few reviews of clutch slippage, etc., however, I've not experienced any problems whatsoever with my mower since I purchased it in 2008. I love that this mower has a cast iron front axle with easy to reach grease fittings. I also love that it has wheels on all 4 corners of the deck to prevent scalping, and makes for a nice smooth cut lawn, even on my really uneven yard. I am just now (4 years later) taking my mower for it's first service. I only mow 1/3 of an acre once a week, and I monitor the oil each time I use it, so far it hasn't burned a drop, and it's just as clear as when I bought it, but figured it was probably well past time to change it anyway. Overall, I would highly recommend this mower, it turns on a dime and cranks easily. I have had to replace the battery once which is normal and had the original blades sharpened once which is amazing...

I would recommend this product to a friend.

20 HP 42" Mower Electric Start

The above mentioned mower is a 2006 model no. 917.276813 and it is the best mower I have ever had in decades of mowing. It is the first Craftsman Lawn Tractor that I have ever owned and I will never have any other, unless Sears quits making them. It is second to none for mowing our grass. I would recommend it to anyone, with pride. The quality and craftsmanship is outstanding. I am so happy that I made the right choice this time after having many different riding mowers that just didn't do the job. Keep up the good work.

quiet, nice ride, decent cut

Overall, great lawn tractor! The tractor starts right away and runs pretty quiet. The ride is nice, steering is easy and the transmission is smooth. The cutting deck is easy to adjust. My only issue is the cut is not great. I replaced the blade with a mulching blade and still doesn't cut great. If the grass is too high, it has issues and leaves clumps all over the yard. Usually takes two passes. Maintenance is simple and i like the way you can drain and fill oil.

junk ,would not recommend, cold blooded, 2 trans, bad in 1 1/2 y

bought ys4500 feb 2010, had trans replaced dec 2010, second transmission same deal as the first leaking out of both axle seals, has kohler 20 hp, most cold blooded motor ever owned. tractor is used on city lot that is flat and is 100x125 total including house ,2 garages, also used for snow removal on 2 small blacktop and concrete drives. If looking for a reliable machine I recommend looking elsewhere craftsman is not the answer. This mower will find a new home in the spring and will be replaced by a top brand with a top warranty. Have always been a fan of craftsman tools, but now I question the commitment to consumers.

craftsman and any suppliers are off my list for purchases. Shame!, they used to be reliable Co.

Good for the $$

I have had this mower for a few months and I like it.   I have the 42 inch snow blade for it as well.  Works good.  If you want a mower that is a very hard worker, you may want to get something more heavy duty but this works for light work.

I like my mower. Only problem I've had is that the mowing deck is too low. Even at level 6 it's only about 4" off the ground. Sears needs to fix the design.

Solid machine well worth the money

Purchased this machine in 2006 particularly for the hydrostatic transmission. I have paid for the service tech to come out and do the annual tune up/maintenance, and that and gas are the only money I have spent on this machine. It cuts flawlessly every time. No issues with stretching belts, as someone noted previously. I hit the occasional stump, rock, tree root and have never broken a blade or the deck. I am not quite certain what the other reviewers are talking about with the clutch, I never use the clutch. I simply slide the transmission lever forward or back. The only time I manipulate the clutch/brake pedal is to stop/park the machine when getting off of it. Otherwise all of my driving is done by the hand lever. It does everything I have asked it to do and has put up with my abuse, without a hitch. There have been no breakages, nothing to repair. It has exceeded my expectations in this regard. I really have nothing negative to say and would buy one again in a heartbeat.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great Tractor

Bought this last year, and it is great. It makes sharp turns, easy to use, starts right up after cold winter, hydrostatic automatic transmission is GREAT, I could never go back to a normal one. It works ok to pick up leaves, you pretty slow to pick them all up or just go over it twice. Great lawn mower.... Another perk is the cup holder.

Received mower in August and have mowed my 3 acres twice with it. It cuts real good and runs the smoothest of any mower I have owned. It cranks right up and the power steering is a plus. Cant say enough about the auto transmission, well worth the cost. My only regret is not waiting for a new shippment of the 3 bin baggers, got a 2 bin instead. Still worth the money over-all.

A great buy

I bought this tractor in May and have had no trouble with it at all. It starts quickly, it mows even, it has plenty of power, and I got it for $1400.00 including tax. I have read some reviews that say they have problems with the clutch, but there is no clutch its an automatic. Some say you need to buy heavy duty blades. So I checked it out and the precision cut plus mowing deck comes with the heaviest blades craftsman has. I also compared them to blades on other makes and are equal. But if you check the blades on some of the lesser craftsman model decks they have thinner blades. So do some home work when buying your tractor. One final note these Craftsman tractors are made by Husqvarna to Sears specifications.

Good mower.

This is my first rider. I've had it over a year now and mow 3 acres at a time. It's never given me any problems and has plenty of power. I've bent the blades twice but both times were on hidden tree roots so that's to be expected. I pull a small trailer with it and have pulled over 500lbs with it. The hydrostatic drive worked fine. I wouldn't suggest that on a regular basis though.

Great Value -- a good 1st lawn tractor

Despite its low price compared to other highly-rated lawn tractors, this is a quality product. I purchased mine a year ago on the strength of its Consumer Reports Best Buy status -- it was the number 3 machine overall, and FAR cheaper than any of the other top ten machines. The mower is easy to use, has great engine access, and seems solidly constructed. My only two suggestions: first, the mulching kit ought to come by default; it was a mild pain to switch the blades, but worth it; second, the hood rattles a good deal, so rubber inserts would be a great improvement to minimize vibration noise. I plan to install self-adhesive felt strips to fix this issue, but a good set of ear plugs are useful as well.

I have used this tractor for mowing and loading with the loader attachment. So far i'm delighted with it. It has more than enough power for my use. The seating and entry/exit is much better than our older Craftsmen lawn tractor. i will be using the snow blade this winter and expect it to be every bit as good as the old one. I believe Craftsman lawn tractors give the best bang for the buck. By the way the old tractor is 9years old and is just getting it's first major repair.
