Cutting Criteria :
The lay of your land, size and terrain determine the tractor criteria that's just right for your mowing area. Once you've assessed the needs of your yard, it is simple to select the appropriate tractor without being a lawn and garden expert.
Cutting Range
Within a normal cutting range of 1-1/2" to 4", you will be able to make a cut that's not too short or too long. Mowing a lawn reduces the amount of food-producing blade surface. By applying the proper cutting range you may minimize disruption in the health and growth of your lawn.
Cutting Systems
Blades:
Lawn experts can't stress enough the importance of keeping your blades sharp. Dull blades leave you with a chewed-up lawn, making it more susceptible to disease. Consider sharpening your blades at the beginning of each season or more often, if needed.
- Some models feature 2 or 3 blades
- More blades create a better cut
Reverse Operating System:
The Reverse Operating System feature gives you the option to drive your tractor and cut your grass in reverse. In order to engage the blades for reverse mowing, you are required to turn the ignition key to the far left. For safety precautions, the blades will not be engaged and the engine will shut down if the key isn't turned. This feature forces users to make a conscious choice whether they want to operate in reverse.
Deck Cut Width
Tractors with a larger deck cutting width enable you to cover more ground in less time.
- 1/2 to 1 acre: lawn tractor with a 42" deck
- 1 to 2 acres: lawn tractor with a 42" to 48" deck
- 3 acres or more: garden tractor with a 48" to 54" deck
Yard Size and Terrain
Yard size and terrain are key factors when deciding between the various cutting deck sizes. Take into consideration the obstacles in your yard, such as trees, bushes, flower beds and other landscape features.
- Smaller decks are easier to handle, so you can easily maneuver around tight spaces
- Larger decks are better equipped for wide and flat areas
