Growing a garden can be very rewarding. Gardens provide fresh, flavorful food, save money on groceries, contribute to better health and provide a great excuse to spend time outdoors. Unfortunately, they can also be a lot of work. The soil must be tilled before you can plant and aerated while the plants grow. Weeds must be controlled, and weeding even the smallest patch of ground sometimes requires hours of backbreaking labor. It doesn't have to be that way, however. With a tiller or cultivator from Sears, you can plant and maintain your garden with a minimal effort on your part, allowing you to enjoy garden-fresh produce and still have time for other things.
Sears has several different types of tillers and cultivators to choose from. Craftsman rear-tine tillers are the best for large gardens and hard or rocky soil. They are bigger and heavier than other types of tillers, but they are also easier to maneuver because the wheels move the tiller along and work separately from the tines. With this type of a tiller, working even the toughest clay soils is no problem. Most gardeners also appreciate the fact that rear-tine tillers don't bounce around on the soil, so they till at a consistent depth. On the other hand, because they have such high horsepower and are so complex, they are quite a bit more expensive than other types of tillers.
For smaller gardens and softer soil, front-tine tillers may be more appropriate. These tillers are much smaller than their rear-tine counterparts, making it easier to maneuver them in small spaces and more convenient to store them. The price of these machines can be quite affordable, and yet they still have enough power to handle a wide range of soil conditions and up to 2,500 square feet of land. As a result, they are the most practical tiller for the majority of home gardeners. However, they are pulled forward by their tines, which makes them less controllable than rear-tine models. They tend to jump around and jerk forward, and they require muscle power to push them into the dirt or hold them back.
The smallest and cheapest type of tilling machine is a cultivator, sometimes called a mini-tiller or a mini-cultivator. Cultivators are miniature front-tine tillers that can till paths of four to eleven inches. They are perfect for weeding between rows and for working less than 500 square feet of land, and many of them have carrying handles and are light enough to be lifted onto raised garden beds. On some models, there are even reversible tines that can either cut deep into the soil or cultivate only the top few inches. The shallow setting is ideal for weeding.
