Woodworking Tools
Depending on the type of project you are working on, you may use manual tools or power woodworking tools. Power woodworking tools make your job easier and faster. Different saws are used for different things. You might use a circular saw to quickly rip a piece of plywood, but if you need a perfectly cut line, you are better off using a table saw. A table saw supports the wood during cutting. It also has adjustable sliders for measurements.
Alignment & Set Up Tools: Alignment tools help the woodworker to measure and cut perfectly the first time. These tools save money by keeping the woodworker from wasting wood with a wrongly measured cut. One of the more popular alignment tools is a laser guide. Many saws and tools come with lasers, but if your miter saw didn come with one, you can purchase a separate laser.
Bandsaws: Bandsaws come in two versions: the stationary type and the benchtop type. The stationary bandsaw is for the high-quantity woodworker. A person who does woodworking as a hobby or has a small business may prefer the benchtop bandsaw. You can purchase a benchtop bandsaw with or without a stand. A bandsaw is used for cutting patterns out of wood.
Power Carving: Power carving woodworking tools include wood carvers, burrs, carving discs and wheels, reciprocating carvers and rotary carvers. Woodcarving blades mount on angle grinders and are used to sculpt, trench, plane, shape and trim wood. Depending on the brand of wheel you get, it may have a chip limiter, a piece that helps to prevent kickback or grabbing. A chip limiter also restricts the depth of the cut, making it easier for a beginner to work with the tool. Other carvers mount on reciprocating carvers and rotary carvers and are used to carve designs into the wood.
Circular Saws: Circular saws are used to rip and/ or cut small or large pieces of wood. The circular saw blade can be set for a certain depth so that you can cut through a single layer of material or more than one layer of materials.
Cordless Tools: Many woodworking tools are cordless. They use rechargeable batteries. These are good for small jobs and convenience. If you like the convenience of not being tripped up by cords, you can purchase extra batteries for larger jobs. While one battery is charging, you can use the other.
Drills: Drills are common woodworking tools used to bore holes in wood. Often, when working with hard wood, it is difficult to drive a screw through the wood. You can pre-bore the hole with a drill, then easily drive the screw through the wood. Some types of wood tend to splinter while you are driving a screw through it. Pre-boring the hole with a drill prevents splintering.
Lathes: A lathe is used to turn wood. You can start out with a block of wood, set the lathe to a specific depth, and cut the wood to that depth. The lathe turns the wood as it is cutting, so that the cut is made all the way around and is uniform. A common use for lathes is table legs or ballisters.
Multi-Function Tools: Multi-function tools do as their name suggests more than one function. A multi-function tool might be a reciprocating tool that sands or cuts. These tools may be corded or cordless.
Planers: A planer smoothes wood. When wood is first cut at the saw mill, it is known as ough cut.The cuts are rough and splintery. The board is put through a planer, which takes all the roughness out of the board. The more times you run a board through a planer, the smoother the board gets. A planer takes less time than a hand-held sander and gets the wood a lot smoother.
Routers and Bits: Routers use several different bits to make different cuts in the wood. Routers can be used to cut the center of a plank out, leaving a lip; they can be used to create decorative edges and can be used for shaping. A router usually comes with at least one bit. Specialty bits for certain cuts can be purchased separately.
There are many more types of woodworking tools for you to choose from, but these are the most common tools found in a hobbyist arsenal. When working with wood, always use the correct tool for the job so that your project comes out as nice as you pictured it.
Items also considered woodworking tools, though they are not used to cut or shape wood, are safety items, such as goggles and gloves. When working with any power tools, you should always wear goggles. Many people like to wear gloves to protect their hands from splinters or an accidental nick from a grinder.
