  • Smoke or have smoked

  • Have a family history of AAA

  • Have had heart bypass surgery

  • Have high blood pressure

  • Have high cholesterol

  • Have poor leg circulation

National Memory Screening Day

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) holds National Memory Screening Day each November as part of its ongoing effort to promote early detection of memory problems, including Alzheimer's disease: to encourage appropriate intervention; and to educate the public about memory concerns, successful aging and resources. Kmart is collaborating with AFA to provide free, confidential screenings on November 16 as part of National Memory Screening Day. Take action and get screened!

How's Your Memory Holding Up? Get Screened Now.

Occasional lapses in memory, such as having difficulty recalling a person's name, become more common in our 50s and 60s and they are a normal sign of aging.

But other types of memory loss, such as temporarily becoming disoriented in a familiar place, may indicate a more serious form of memory impairment.

How do you distinguish normal "senior moments" from more worrisome memory lapses?

That's where memory-screening tests come in. Memory-screening tests make sense for anyone concerned about memory loss or experiencing warning signs of dementia, such as difficulty completing familiar tasks. Screening also makes sense if your family and friends have noticed changes in your memory or if you believe you're at risk due to a family history of Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia.

Screenings are also appropriate for anyone who does not have a concern right now, but who wants to see how their memory is now and for future comparisons.

A memory screening test is not used to diagnose any particular illness and does not replace consultation with a qualified physician or other healthcare professional.

Alzheimer's Disease Facts

  • 5.1 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease.

  • Current research from the National Institute on Aging indicates that the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease doubles every five years beyond age 65.

  • In a small percentage of cases, Alzheimer's disease affects people at a much younger age — 30s, 40s and 50s.

  • Alzheimer's disease is the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S.
