With vast freezer capacity, you can store lots of frozen foods and easily get to what you need. The narrow doors are great if you don't have a lot of kitchen space, however you'll have less space to store wider items in the fresh food and freezer sides of the fridge.

          • Freezer space averages about 37% of the total capacity

          free-standing

Freestanding refrigerators can be rolled into and out of their space. Most refrigerators are freestanding. They are available in standard- and counter-depth.

          next page standard depth

          standard depth

These refrigerators are more than 28 inches deep and don't always sit flush with the depth of your counters.

          next page counter depth

          counter depth

The depth of this fridge is 28 inches or less sitting flush with your kitchen counters, giving you that built-in look without the price. They have less depth capacity than standard-depth fridges but make up for that by often being wider.

When you want a truly integrated style, built-in is the way to go. They often have customizable front panels to match your kitchen's decor and are usually counter-depth. They're available in all door styles except top freezer.

          how should I measure?

Measure how much space you have for a fridge (which isn't necessarily the same as the size of your current fridge). Width is the most important measurement, but height and depth are important if you have other space restrictions like cabinets over your fridge or you want a fridge that's counter depth. You'll want your measurements to leave a little space next to and above the refrigerator for air circulation.

Also, be sure to make sure the maximum width or depth of your fridge can fit through the narrowest doorways or halls leading to your kitchen.

        • based on how you shop for food, what size fridge would be best for you?

          next

          why is this important?

Depending on how much food you often have on hand, you'll want to make sure you have the capacity to store everything. For example, if you stock up on frozen food, you'll want more freezer room than if you make more frequent trips to the store and rarely freeze food. Also having smaller amounts of food on hand at a single time can mean it's smarter (and cheaper) to get a smaller fridge.

        • What other features would you like in your fridge?

          next

          what should I look for?

Choose a refrigerator that fits your lifestyle. If you have lots of fresh fruit or vegetables on hand, a crisper drawer could be right a solid choice. Often get larger containers of liquid? You might want to consider gallon door storage. If you find yourself opening the refrigerator a dozen times a day to get ice for your drinks, a thru-door water and ice dispenser is right for you. Think of how you use your fridge, and select the features that matter most to you.
