I love my food saver. My husband & I use it regularly. I do suggest getting a extended if offered. We had to replace ours right after the warranty was up. No auguring about replacing it. We have saved a lot of money buying meats on sale (and or in bulk) and vacuum sealing it ASAP. I vacuum seal everything from nuts to powdered sugar (in a canister). I have also sealed some of my coin collection.

I owned a FoodSaver (Vac550) for over 10 years and got very reliable service out of it. As noted here all FoodSaver bags and accessories are expensive, but what burns me is the availability of parts. Mine had to be replaced because a three buck gasket isn't sold by the manufacturer. I thought this was due to its age, but lo and behold, many current models HAVE NO REPLACEMENT PARTS available on their website - the particular model (V2420) shown here has only the upper gasket for sale, but it's way more rugged than the lower gasket - I cannot image it would ever wear out... Go figure. This is bizarre and can only be for one reason - the manufacturer considers them throw-away appliances. I have now purchased a competing Kenmore, even though I had to throw away perfectly good FoodSaver brand bags (no they are not interchangable).
Operation Hints - FWIW: Obsess about the cleanliness of the gaskets - if they are dirty (even small specs of stuff) the bags won't want to seal. Check to see if there's an altitude adjuster on the bottom or back of the machine. Mine seemed to work best adjusted to the "highest" altitude setting. If there's the tinyest wrinkle in the bag as it spans the gaskets, it won't seal - make sure it's perfectly flat top and bottom. Look for a model that allows you to stop sealing before the machine wants to - that way you can seal crushable items without destroying them... FWIW

Basically buy meat and other Items on sale custom packages and freeze The new ones have a moist setting so liquid doesnt get sucked into the vacuum part of the machine still becareful with it I get around the liquid limitation by freezing the liquid first in an appropriately sized container. Once frozed solid, I pop it out & vac bag it. I like to freeze the meat that I buy on sale in some sort of marinade so that when it's thawed it's ready to go. It's a little messy, but if you're doing a bunch of meat at once it's a single clean up. I have a Food Saver, with the on board storage for a roll & with an on board "slicer" to cut the bag from the roll. I really like it. It does have a large footprint, however. It's best to keep the thing out on the counter if you can so that you will use it more. It is worth every penny!!!

warranty consciousThis is my third sealer and all did not last because of a two cent strip of tape that customer service will not make available. They do offer a new machine at 25% off. Can do better than that at local merchants.
