not for short peopleThis HoMedics Shiatsu massager is w/o the heat element. The unit has two parts: the back massager and the seat. For the full effect of the back massager, you need to be about 5ft 11in tall up to about 6ft 4in tall, otherwise you lose out on the full and upper options for the shiatsu and rolling massages. The shiatsu has a nice feature that compensates the shorter person...the hand control allows for spot massaging. This is a great feature! The rolling massage feature allows adjustment of the width of the rollers. This is great as well. It would be nice to be able to adjust the width of the rollers for the shiatsu and to spot massage with the rolling feature.
The seat has three vibrating speeds. I found this feature (vibrating seat pointless). The vibrations are not strong enough to massage the buttocks and serves more as an annoyance.
Overall, it is a reasonable, at home back massager priced for the "birthday gift". If you just want a moderate back massager after a stressful day, then this is a good option to consider.
