Edsal 5 Shelf Unit is sturdy. November 04, 2010
The Edsal 5 shelf unit is moderately easy to put together. I did two of them by myself. Sometimes the rivets do not go all the way down into the grooves, but repeated hammering should take care of it. The instructions say lightly tap into place, but you really have to hammer it hard to get the rivets in the grooves.
The units are sturdy and great to store a variety of items in our garage.
If you are looking for a unit that easily adjusts shelves this would not be the best unit. It would be a hassle to take the unit apart to adjust the height of the shelves. It's best to figure out the heights you want from the start. One shelf is actually fixed because it holds two vertical braces together so you can't vary it's level.

GOOD ENOUGH FOR STORAGE UNITS July 29, 2009
Just purchased and assembled 2 of these units. A little "whippy" and frustrating to assemble, the sale price is probably close to their true value. They are adequate for use as non-commercial home owner basement/garage storage units. I had also hoped to use them as work benches but they're probably not up to the heavier bench tools (grinders, sanders, scroll saws, etc.). Most irritating drawback: When the shelves are dropped into place, the shelf support rails extend up, higher than the shelves. The edges are not razor sharp but could cut hands if you're not careful.

Thin Partical board used for shelvesI wasn't sure what to expect for the low price when I got this ($49.95) on sale. But was actually pleased with what I got for the money. Be advised these are actually quite heavy and that made me happy. The assembly is rather simple, just use common sense and have a large rubber mallet ready to help you hammer it into place. I have filled it up with cases of water and tools with no problem.
I certainly wouldn't use these or rate these as industrial but they are perfect for home use or light business use.
I will buy these again if the price goes back down, maybe three or four more for the garage/basement.

I went back and forth whether or not to buy such a bulky heavy duty shelf. The other shelves are much lighter and nicer looking. And come in painted chrome or black . Are equally strong. But the biggest factor and difference is that the others will rust in time. The sales associates said i could put rust o leum on the other brand. But ive done that on my metal security door, and it never works. So i bought this steel one. Its Heavy as Heck ! But it will last along time . And if you buy it at Sears the nice boys in pick up will load it in the car for you :)

bad assembly instructionsOn sale for $49.99, these shelves are an awesome buy. I've used dozens of these units for over a year now to stack really heavy textbooks (each shelf crammed 100% full, bottom to top and entire shelf area too), and they perform awesomely. Even under the heaviest load, they only deflect (bend under stress) by less than an inch (about 1/2-inch usually). This is indoors under AC though - I have no knowledge of what might happen under high-moisture conditions.
Biggest problem - the assembly instructions. You get an engineering diagram which is tough to interpret. Correct interpretation is that the two vertical pieces have to be (rather counterintuitively) stacked directly on top of each other with NO overlap at all. Even though the vertical pieces are thin steel, the shelf and rivet surroundings will allow them to securely maintain a vertically stacked position. DO NOT attempt to create an inch or two of overlap by having the rivet go through BOTH vertical pieces (the top of one and the bottom of the other)!!! The assembly instructions need to be rewritten to clearly make this specific point.
