Craftsman 3 X 21 in. Belt Sander, 8amp Very Useful! April 05, 2011
This device is very useful. I recently built a small deck around one end of my above ground pool. Having this belt sander really helped finish off the job with nice precision and look. Light enough to handle yet strong enough to go the distance. Maintenance is simple and parts availability is second to none.

Poor tracking - Not worthy of Craftsman brand April 12, 2011
My 30 year old Craftsman sander finally needed to be replaced and I went to purchase a replacement late that evening just prior to closing. I had a customer's project that required finishing and I did not research this model prior to my purchase. I am not a rookie at woodworking, but found the tracking control to be poorly designed. The location of the control made it easy to bump with my large hands. I also found that the belt drift followed "high sports" on the workpiece as well as the slightest off center pressure. The normal procedure to "break in a belt" is to run it for a few minutes with no contact and adjust the tracking to run true. After doing this, within the first couple of minutes of sanding, the beast frayed the edges of 2 belts and also wore through the belt splice in the middle of the belt. This is not a tool that I wish to own, so back it went. I am sorry, but this model should be dropped from the lineup or redesigned. On a positive note, I purchased the Craftsman "dragster" model and was quite pleased with it and will post an appropiate review.

Great Sander for the Price! February 08, 2012

easy to adjust belt,easy to change belts,Great priceI purchased this belt sander because the more inexpensive model I originally wanted wasn't available off the store shelf. I needed a sander right away to finish a solid-core door installation - a simple material removal (on the door bottom) where the new solid-core door scuffed against an uneven floor. Usually I simply hand-block sand the material to be removed, but needing to remove more than just a "bit" of material this was not an option.
The belts purchased (also at Sears) went onto the sander easily, and after a few quick "hits" of the switch the belt had been adjusted so it tracked straight and true - it couldn't have been simpler to perform. I put the sander to work on the door edge, and in only minutes the work was complete - it worked far better and faster than I could have hoped. The sander never slowed, the paper remained true, and ultimately saved me hours of time had I performed the task my usual way. The bag helped keep the dust to a minimum, and never clogged - a common problem with many sanders according to other reviews.
Although I have only used this sander minimally, and can't judge its long-term performance, it seems very well made and is extremely user friendly in set-up and use.
The only drawback may be its slightly heavier weight, which is especially noticeable when compared to the next size down sander. While definitely not a large sander, its not one to be held or used in awkward angles for any length of time, but for open areas and for use on easily accessed material, its fantastic!

The belts are easy to change and adjust. Sometimes I find the belt will shift if I'm not careful.
The dust collector isn't much use - expect to get dust everywhere when you use this. The dust collection bag is also hard to remove and empty without making an even bigger mess.
