    Craftsman Professional Automotive Test & Brake Bleed Kit January 17, 2011

    This is a very nice kit made for Sears Craftsman by MityVac. It has everything you need to bleed your brakes and test your engines vacuum systems. This is the best kit currently availabe on the market. Snap-On(Blue-Point), Mac, and Matco also sell this exact same kit under their brand names for $100+ (Mac wants $117.99), and they are not even customized as thoroughly as the Craftsman model. They have the same internal parts and yet they are charging $10-30 more for their brand name. Also the Craftsman Kit has a One Year FULL WARRANTY(no limitations/restrictions other than for commercial and rental use, or vacuum pump seals, which are expendable parts) while the truck brands only have a One Year LIMITED WARRANTY(with limitations/restrictions not covering accidental misuse, overload, unauthorized repairs etc.). The pump itself is made of heavy duty die cast metal (not cheap, flimsy plastic) and is fully servicable. Parts do not appear to be available through Sears PartsDirect, but they are available directly from MityVac. The kit comes with a very detailed owners manual covering many different service procedures, besides just bleeding brakes, explains how it works, and lists part numbers for replacement parts. This kit is unfortunately Made in China, but you are not likely going to find an American made vacuum pump kit (MityVac formerly made their pumps in the USA), but you can always make it better by putting in U.S. made o-rings and seals, U.S. made clear tubing, and American made brass hose barbs and tees, most of which can be purchased from your local hardware store. I highly recommend this kit.

    Not convinced this bleeder is a true ''professional" February 18, 2011

    I can't imagine any true professional mechanic wanting to deal with a hand pumped vacuum bleeder. Who designed this thing; some 4th grader who liked all the multi-colored caps that come with this kit, or some designer who's never been in a real garage before? Let me say that the PUMP itself, i.e., the ''real'' tool part of this entire kit, seems to be legit. i checked it several times by putting a glove on the end to ensure it was actually trying to suck/create a vacuum and it was pulling all the way to 30hg.. but the rest of the kit just straight up sucks. well, i wish it sucked! ha. first, you would need to get your own hose to make this thing work as it should in real world conditions. The instructions guide you to cut a piece of the supplied hose to 3.5" and put it between the collection container and the pump itself. Has anyone who designed this been near a brake system on a car? Did they think there exists some magic bench in every wheel well that just holds this container securely so this system will work?! I rhetorically ask this because one fitting on the reservoir lid is a normal hose-barb type fitting that a hose will fairly securely fit over, but the other fitting on the lid is a c-clip-like fitting that i've only seen on fuel-line fittings that have a special hose fitting on the outside of the line so it is securely held by said c-clip.. but it just crimps the hose a little.. it doesn't appear to make an effective seal, unless you hold it the entire time in just the right spot. the pump end is also just a 'slip fit' for the hose, there are no clamps/barbs etc to securely hold the hose on the pump. This would help alot since you need four hands to hold all the crap on this thing securely; there's this fitting, the other end of that hose that goes to the jar lid fitting, the other lid fitting and/or holding the lid on the res jar to make sure it stays sealed, and the only one that would be ''allowably'' questionable since you can't hose clamp it; the bleeder screw on the caliper itself. The lid for the res has like a 1/4" turn to it on locking numbs that never fully feel secure so maybe the leak is in that. A friend of mine has a similiar one of these kits from Sears and he recommends some kind of goop, i guess like vaseline, to help seal the lid. All of it makes some sense except the #$$king slip-in fitting on the reservoir lid. I spent over three hours attempting to bleed my brake system and never felt satisfied that it's happened. On the front lines for over half an hour it was pulling bubbles through the hose like it had an aquarium air pump inside my caliper.. And this was on the line thats closest to the master cylinder.. and the fluid in that hardly moved at all the whole time on the front lines.. so maybe this thing is good for two wheels but not all four?!? I have no idea.. I'm the most mechanic like person i know, other than real mechanics. I've rebuilt engines, replaced pressed in ball joints, suspensions, etc etc so if I can't figure this thing out, I'm going with there's something wrong with IT, not me... BUT anything is possible. My buddy who has a similiar bleeder from Sears says it sounds like somethings wrong because he said his usually takes at most 10 pumps per wheel and its good. He and I have been rebuilding cars for almost 20 years now; he's an automotive engineer by career, so I know he knows what he's talkin about. I have loved the Craftsman line since i was a kid, but now i'm starting to lean towards only mechanics tools that don't have any moving parts. I am planning on returning this kit, and buying a MityVac bleeder that runs off an air compressor..This is supposed to be a good kit; I tend to have bad luck, so I wish you good luck if you purchase this.

    I purchased this Craftsman Professional brake bleeder and vacuum/pressure kit. This is a good unit for the DIYer who like to do their own automotive repairs. This unit works as advertised to bleed the brakes. Like any other tool you need to set it up for the application it is being used for at that time. This tool has been used to do at least six different brake jobs since I purchased the tool. I found that getting brass adapters help to make a better seal. This is a good tool at a reasonable price. This is a nice tool for the DIYer and a great addition to any toolbox.

    Pros:
    Pump seems to be good

    I used it to bleed my master cylinder and brake lines. Works like it is supposed too. WAY better than the old push method but you'll wind up squeezing that trigger a few hundred times by the time you're finish. I had a great seal and the product works like its suppose too but If you can afford the one that hooks to an air compressor and you have an air compressor, I'd go that route. I wish I'd bought that one instead for another $50-60.
