Very Capable Table Saw if Assembled and Aligned With Great Care.

After much research, I had bought the Craftsman model 21807 the previous month. Very effective while it worked, but it was very unsafe, and the direct-drive motor siezed up after 1 week of use. Got a full refund from Sears. Craftsman is my brand and the brand of both my grandfathers but these days, for anything that doesn't fit in one hand and come with a forever guarantee, well, Craftsman has become Cost-Cutting-Man, with every aspect of design, materials and manufacturing on its low-mid price range power tools being skimped on.

I got this saw 2 weeks ago and paid 450$ for it. I had obsessively researched table saws from Grizzly, Jet, Delta, Dewalt, Skill, Bosch, and others. DETAILED information for this saw was non-existent on the internet. I learned a lot from a detailed review on a woodworking website and wanted to give Craftsman one last chance. This saw comes in a box that measures 4ft long x 2.5ft wide x 2.5ft high. Sears brought it out to the pick up truck on a cart, lifted into bed easy with four people total. Used a ramp and one other person to get it off the truck and into house. If looking for a challenge of your strength and use of leverage, it is possible for one person to get it from Sears to your house.

However, upon removing all of the parts from the box, the single largest piece, (top half of cabinet/cast iron table/motor) has got to weigh 200lbs by itself, I could not lift this awkward to grip dead-weight by myself. But, it turns out that you can leave this piece as it comes and still assemble the whole saw as long as you remove the thick styrofoam that encases it. This top section remains upside down as the entire bottom half of the saw gets assembled and attached. At that point I flipped it right-side up by myself, with great effort. So it is possible for one person to transport and assemble this table saw by oneself if help is not available, but you have to be strong like bull and plan your moves well.

It took 8 hours to fully assemble this table saw. The instructions are somewhat lacking but still worked. The next day I spent 2 hours fine tuning various alignments. There are many to deal with, but all of these alignments can be made as accurate as you want with time and effort. The only difficulty I have had is adjusting the blade parrallel to the miter slots. In short, accurately adjusting the trunnions was a trying process, and the front trunnion is very difficult to get at. After two battles with the trunnions, I've got the blade aligned within 1/64 inch of being parallel to the miter slots.

If great care is given to the many alignments, after the refinements are made this saw is just great.  With the right blade for your specific use, the 1.75 HP V-Belt drive motor is plenty of power. It runs smooth and quiet. The safety equipment is so well designed that I actually use it. The splitter, blade guard, and riving knives are real quick to take off and put on. This will save people (like me) from kickbacks and losing fingers. Almost all of this saw is heavy duty construction, the only exception is 2 plastic washers for the tilt/height wheels, already broke, already replaced with better ones. Also, there is play in the height adjustment that forces the blade angle off a degree or two, but if you become aware of how/why this happens, you correct it by relieving the tension that is put on during raising or lowering the blade, by just reversing the wheel a little bit after raising or lowering and you will feel the tension go away see the blade go back where you want it.

Hope that helps. For the price, this saw is outstanding. There are a lot of things to dial in to get this saw accurate. That is the only reason I can't say it is perfect. So far, this saw is a credit to the Craftsman name and hopefully they will start making more reasonably priced, quality power tools like this one and make them in America. Please do this Craftsman, it's good business, and all the old-schoolers can stop spinning in their graves.

Be careful of alignment issues
First off, let me clear up some misconceptions. This is NOT a JET, Grizzly, or Rikon saw rebranded. This is NOT a cabinet saw. Even though the motor is enclosed, the trunions are table mounted; not cabinet mounted. This is however, the same basic saw as the Ridgid R4512 with minor cosmetic differences. This saw has 2 fatal flaws that need to be taken into account before purchase, and need to me taken seriously: 1 - The blade is known to change alignment with height adjustment. This will cause your cuts to be off my as much as 1/16" of an inch for every 10" of wood you cut. You could have a difference of almost half an inch if you rip an 8 foot board. That is a very serious problem that will ruin your work. Not only that it creates a dangerous situation. If your rip fence and blade are not in alignment, it creates a dangerous kickback situation. It cannot be fixed, it cannot be adjusted out. Fortunately, there are examples of this saw (and the R4512) that do not have this issue. PLEASE test your alignment BEFORE you assemble this saw. Google "alignment issues, R4512" and you will find the procedure. It is simple and only requires you install the blade and have a metal ruler handy. If you saw fails this test, return it. It cannot be fixed. 2 - The fence rail is an issue. Because it is in two pieces, when you have the fence closer than 3" to the blade, the clamping force can change the geometry of the fence, causing misalignment. With that said, if you get this saw without the alignment issue, it is an excellent saw. If you are really careful clamping down the fence, you can avoid the geometry change. There are also many aftermarket fences that fit this saw. Again, there is not as much information out there on the craftsman version, but it is nearly identical to the Ridgid R4512. If you want to do additional research before getting this saw, consider all the reviews on the R4512 as well. In addition, the blade is a throw away. I wouldn't even bother cleaning the grease off and installing it. This is not uncommon and most blades that come with any saw are cheap. You are buying a saw that can provide professional results if properly set up for under 700$. That is a great bargain. Do youself a favor and get a good quality blade or two. If you decide to use the included blade, please do not judge the performance of the saw based on that. I have used it, I can confirm it is terrible. There is no doubt about it. I hope Sears and the others that sell this saw can clear up the manufacturing issues with the trunions. Craftsman has taken a beating lately, and this saw is a real gem and could restore the faith in the brand that our fathers and grandfathers once had. I cannot stress this enough - TEST your saw for the alignment issue. It is extremely common. It cannot be fixed, and it will ruin your work and possibly create a dangerous kickback situation.

10 in. Contractor Saw

Unable to align the saw blade and the table using procedure in the user manual. Sears in-home service tech could not align the saw blade either.

Quality Tablesaw

Packaging is big, bulky and heavy definately a 2 man job to manage this. Installation instructions vague but not difficult to understand and put together. If have trouble putting this saw together you shouldn't be working with sharp tools. Took me 3 hours to put together. Rip fence and mitre guage are adequate, buy a better blade don't even install the included one. This is a quality heavy duty saw, love it I'm glad I purchased it.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Now, I am pleased

I had to return the first contractor saw I bought due to missing parts--namely nuts and bolts, and I could not align the trunnion more than 1/8 of an inch--it was off more than 1/4 of an inch. To my amaze, not one of the salesman had a complaint on the saw. Looking on this site I discovered it had an outstanding review. I then decided to try again and am very pleased. Nothing was missing. It is a fine piece of machinery; however, I do suggest that if you decide to purchase it, do yourself a favor and take it out of the shipping carton at the store. Check it very thouroughly for damage. The first one had a severely cracked trunnion leaving adjustment impossible. The second one is fine. In the process of assembling the second one I discovered that all of the parts were in bags or wrapping not like the first one.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Review of Sears Contractor Saw I purchased and assembled

I was quite concerned when Sears personnel brought the box out to my car because it had been damaged and taped in many places. Once I got the box home I took inventory and to my surprise all the parts were there. The assembly went well until I got to the brace item 30. It had square holes in one end not allowing the bolts to fit through. I called Sear's and they sent it out within a few days and it was correct. Once I adjusted the table insert level with the table top the magnet does not hold it in place because it's too low. I could not push it up from the bottom because there is no hole drilled through. I tried to drill the magnet but its too hard even with a good drill bit. I have some ideas but I will call Sears to see what they suggest. The blade checked out square to the miter gauge slots. The paint has rust spots under it in quite a few places and the fence can only be removed at the far left or right."Not user friendly" Not a bad saw for the price.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Blade stalls when attempting to cut 1/4 plywood

Since my earlier review was rejected, I will only describe the tool, not the situation. saw is labeled as a "contractor" table saw but the unit I purchased is unable to saw through 1/4" plywood without having the blade stall every 3-4". Sears professionals have attempted to correct this problem but after a few cuts the same problem was back.

Hobbyist Opinion

After doing some research and browsing, I decided on this table saw. I knew the set up would be time consuming but the effort in setting up the table would come out in excellent cuts for my wood working hobby, I have a small complaint with one of the adjustment screws for the face plate. I have yet to be able to adjust it. It is refusing to budge. A gorilla might have installed it. The safety switch is a nice feature. Plenty of cord length to roll around my garage to the available work space. Easy adjustment to the front measuring bar. After setup I was 1/32 of an inch off and corrected fairly easily.

Love this saw, would highly recommend to any one on the fence about quality. This saw is a beast! Very well made. Cuts true with new Freud blade, very stable, but easy to move around shop when on the wheels. Looking forward to many years of good use with this saw.

DO NOT BUY, this saw is DANGEROUS and cannot be adjusted properly

After hours of careful setup and assembly, this saw is a real lemon. The parallelism of the blade to the miter slots changes with the height of the blade. This problem cannot be adjusted. Also the miter slots are different sizes. I made a jig that works great in the left slot but when i tried it in the right the miter bar would not even fit in the slot. Last and worst of all is the fence. HOURS spent trying to set it up correctly then rip about 30 ft of 3/4 oak. 1st cut=1.5 inches, last cut =1.625 inches. And I never touched the fence once. Even a tiny adjustment tighter on the adjustment nut and the fence is too stiff to even slide. Oh also the blade that comes with the saw was WARPED. It would not cut worth a **** so I put a micrometer on it and it was over .015 of an inch different when spinning the blade. All of these things are a deal breaker for me and I think ************** builds more solid tools....I mean toys. This is not a pro tool. It is a DANGEROUS anchor.
