Craftsman 1 1/2 hp Table Saw - Excellent Saw for the money February 14, 2011

This saw has performed exceptionally well since I received it approx. 8 months ago. It actually came out of the crate perfectly aligned! I was dubious since this saw is a replacement for the Craftsman 10" Contractor Saw I received as a gift 8 months before. That saw was a total nightmare from the start and eventually the main trunion cracked in half one day when I was moving the blade to 45 degrees. This saw, by contrast, has been virtually perfect, except for the blade angle adujustment wheel which was a little loose as it goes through the cabinet. I have rigged up a collar which works just fine. The dust collection is not the best because too much sawdust collects at the base of the cabinet instead of being sucked out. I have to vacuum it out after major projects. Other than that, I am very happy the saw. The fence system is accurate and solid and the miter gauge is accurate and true. I like having the option of using the fence on the miter gauge or adding my own fence for specific projects. Set up instructions were very good and I was able to put it together in less than a day.

Not the Craftsman I remember..... August 31, 2010

I have been a faithful Craftsman tool customer for decades - I kept my first few cars on the road thanks to my first Craftsman tools. Through the years I have owned Craftsman power tools and hand tools, and I bypass the big box stores for the local Sears Hardware whenever possible. So....it really is a shame to give this table saw such a poor review.

I purchased the saw to replace a low end Craftsman unit I'd had for over 15 years. This was going to be the start of a "serious" woodshop, or at least a step up from what I had. Ordered online, and the saw arrived in good condition. After putting it together using the excellent instructions, I fired it up and immediately noticed that the blade was vibrating side to side periodically. After shut off the whole machine would rumble as the blade coasted through some kind of resonance point. It was clearly unusable - the kerf would have varied in width between 1 and 2 blade widths from the vibration. I have yet to make a single cut with it.

I found a couple of fasteners that had worked loose on the motor mounting, but the vibration remained after tightening. The machine is flat and level to the floor...I can put my entire weight (190) on each corner and there is no rocking. Examining the drive belt I found a "bump" where the two ends are joined - a new belt was provided by customer service, but the vibration remained. The table saw blade runs true on my miter saw, and the miter saw blade vibrates on the table saw. Customer service gave me a few things to try, and ultimately their suggestion to use a dial indicator on the rotating parts to isolate the problem turned up an out-of-round drive pulley on the arbor. I am seeing almost .015" variation across the circumference of that pulley - this is clearly the problem.

I am going to call customer service back in the morning.....and I think I am going to ask for my money back. Sears - I am very disappointed with this purchase. This isn't a bottom-of-the-line table saw. For this money I don't expect perfection, but in this case even basic functionality is missing. The fact that it has such an obvious defect, one that it is virtually impossible to blame on "shipping damage" makes me suspicious of the entire machine's long term viability.  Sorry - for this kind of money I expected more. Much, much more.

Great value, great saw! December 29, 2011
    By waltben of Haymarket, VA
    Pros:
nice feature set,Nice saw, heavy,Great value
    Cons:
    None in my experience

Bought mine just after it came out.  A little difficult adjusting the trunion, but almost all table saws are like that.  Also difficult getting a few of the fence screws in, otherwise an easy assembly.

I didn't expect the blade that it comes with to be great (and it isn't) so I put a decent Freud on it right away for the project I bought it for - making 8' long book racks for the back of my church's pews.  I made over 100 yards of 1" tall by 3/8" thick strips of ash wood, and all the 'stand off' pieces as well (inclluding dado work to recess the strips).  The saw and fence maintained accuracy throughout this job, and was powerful enough to handle the kiln dried ash easily.
