The DW788 is the premium 20 In. scroll saw in the market. Its double parallel-link arm design dramatically reduces vibration and noise, and provides for extremely accurate cuts. The on-off switch, electronic variable speed, flexible dust blower and blade-tensioning lever are all located on the front upper arm for added convenience.

I am a beginning scroller. I read a number of product reviews in wood magazines and saw several of the models I was interested in demonstrated (and tried them too). I was interested in ease of use and dependability. The Dewalt has lived up to my expectations in every way. Set up was easy, and blade changing simple. Cuts are smooth. There are better, and more expensive, saws out there, but for the money, the DeWalt is a GREAT deal.

I'm familiar with the DW788 and have always thought them to be a good investment for a scrollsaw. However, now that they are made in Taiwan & China I find that the quality has been reduced. The blade hole doesn't match up properly but after alittle use and a couple of blades the hole is open enough to use properly Obviously the table is made of some cheap soft metal. The same problem with the tension cam. (Very soft metal used...wouldn't surprise me if it was lead.) After 1 months use the inner teeth are already wearing down. I anticipate it having to be replaced in less than 90 days. This is a very common problem with the new models. I purchased the 5yr. extended warranty simply because I expect to run into problems.....like I said it's now made outside of Canada. The saw I have from 2001 is still working like the day I got it. It was made in Canada but after 2006 they outsourced to China. Considering the chepaer way it is made these days I think the price at Sears is very high.....but Sears is right down the street from me.....so any problems with the saw and I take a short trip as opposed to HUGE shipping charges if purchased over the internet and anything happens. Also...when buying this saw from Sears....GO INTO THE STORE and order it. If you order at Sears.com they will charge you shipping....if you order from the store...there is FREE shipping right to the door. You would think that Sears would treat ALL customers exactly the same but apparently that's not true anymore.

I received a Dremel Scroll Saw for Christmas one year and after a year of long and intense session's of Scroll Saw Fretwork, the Dremel decided to shut down on me. I needed a professional saw that could handle hours upon hours of detailed cutting. I did not want another scroll saw that failed to survive the demand of constant pressure on the motor and other moving components.
I came across an advertisement that offered a DeWalt 20" DW788. After reading the specifications on this model and noticing that the design looked aggressive and well planned out, I figured I had to own one.
I love the quick disconnect blade system. You will find a simple thumb-screw blade clamp below the left-right tilting table and another one above the table just a few inches away from the lever action blade tensioner.
I also love how the DeWalt DW788 has a built in air bellows that pumps a guided stream of air into the cutting path of the blade to help you keep saw dust away from your view of the cutting line. The motor is whisper quiet and this makes for a more peaceful cutting experience. I've built a multitude fretwork projects on this machine and it still humm's along quietly and dependabley.
I mainly use the DW788 Scroll Saw for building very detailed fretwork clocks. This saw is definintely well suited to heavy duty use and can produce craft pieces that can be considered works of art that can easily become family heirlooms!
You can't go wrong with this DW788 Scroll Saw...just take a peek at the work I've produced with one!
Mr. Fix-itI have had a couple of scrollsaws before this one, but this one is the best. The blade changes are fast and easy. Once you get use to the saw and the blade tension it is a dream for a good wood worker. However, I would not recommend this to a person just starting out on a scroll saw, this is for people with experience. It has a very fine cut and you need to know what you are doing. I don't think there is a better saw on the market right now.
