Craftsman Vibrafree Sander is the best rand orbit I've used February 09, 2011
This sander is truly as vibration free as you can get, and the dust collection works very well. The instructions say that you can use it without attaching it to a vacuum when using it for short periods. I tried that and was able to use it for more than brief periods that way. The room didn't become dusty but I did have to wipe off a faint coating of dust from my goggles with an hour's use. The disks stayed on just fine and I can't imagine them falling off unless you put them on backwards. The only issues I had were that if you use a coarse grain such as 80, the extra thickness makes it very difficult to get hold of the disk for removal. For finer grits, once you get a piece loose, you need to pull non-aggressively or else they will stretch, and reusing them will be tougher because you won't be able to center them perfectly. I did manage to nick the edge of one disk but it was still usable and all disks held up quite well, making them affordable given their longevity. Many of the negative reviews were based on disk availability and were not reviews of the product itself. You can go to the Sears website, search, and select "store pickup." I found a warning that one of the grits had "only 8 left" but you can easily find what's available near you before buying the sander. There should be no problem buying them on line, even if some reviewers had that problem years ago. I'd give the sander itself top marks and the disks deserve their own review.

I experienced the same issues with the outer disc falling off prematurely, though it did not happen as quickly as reported in the other review. I found that the discs are more prone to fall off when sanding over non-flat surfaces. It was only the outer ring for some reason. The sander has very little vibration as reported. As mentioned, replacement discs are not available on-line or in stores. You can order them by calling the Sears 1-800 # found on this site. The part #'s are 00967592 and 00967591 for medium and fine grits. There is also a course grit. I did not have a problem placing the order last week. Also, I was able to use "normal" 5" hook/loop discs with this sander. All you need to do is trace the outline of one of the discs that come with the sander on one of the normal ones and cut out the outline. These have worked fine and are a lot cheaper than the ones Sears sells. In general the sander works ok. It could use a little more power, but is vibration free as advertised. If these mentioned issues were fixed this would be an excellent rated sander.

The quality was superb and at one time craftsman sold the best products available. I still have some of my grandfathers craftsman tools, and they still work like they should. Sadly the Craftsman products that I grew up with and swore by have lost all quality and value. This sander is made of cheap plastic, most likely made in China I'm sure. I would be surprised if this thing will make it a year. Not only does this look and feel cheap, the special sanding disks are not available anywhere, not on the website, and not in the stores. I have absolutely no use for this sander anymore because of this. Thank goodness I bought it a week ago, because it is going right back to the store to sit with all of the other cheaply made, chinese products that sears has to offer. Craftsman has lost me as a consumer of their products until they show some pride in their " Craft" again.

This sander is priced well, works great and if things go wrong, can be replaced in store, after following registration procedures. This is a huge plus, as I have waited months for repairs from other vendors. I don't know why I have used other brands so frequently in the past, but we will be buying this, and other sanders in the future from Sears. Highly recommended!

Limited paper grits availableI didn't realize when I bought this sander that the sanding pad was different from most other like sanders. The way it is designed it will not pick up the dust with the standard sanding discs and therefore you have to buy the discs only provided by Sears. Here lies the problem! First, I have been to several Sears Stores and they either don't have the sanding discs at all or you can only get them in 120 grit or higher. Nothing in 40, 60 or even 80 grit. Second, you can't even order or find the lower grits online. So what's the purpose of selling a product that you can't find the proper accessories let alone the limited accessories for that product. I'm taking my back and getting a real professional sander.
