    Max Axess Mechanics Tool Set September 02, 2011

    This is a prefect set for hard to get at places, wish I had had this set years ago. It's worth about twice the price. I've even got a couple car crazy friends that I'm going to get this set for, that is when I can afford it. The people I've showed it to, said thay were going to get it. Greg

    item o.k. but your warranty dont mean much anymore December 29, 2011

    your warranty says complete satisfaction for lifetime.. i took some tools in to the sears hardware store in avon indiana and they won't repair or replace unless they want to. they will argue that the tool is not broke. they have a 10 item limit a day. if sears discontinue a tool you are just out of luck. they dont make the tape measure any more so warranty wise to bad so sad. what happen to lifetime? i have a bunch of other tools they have discontinued. just out of luck on them. the manager has a list of rules on warranty my tools. rules on lifetime complete satisfaction? now there is talk about closing some stores. go back to made in the u.s.a. and the rules that was before kmart bought sears.

    Let's get the bad out of the way: Growing up, Craftsman Tools were synonymous with "Made in America". That has become rare. The set I have was made in China. The shape of the oblong shape of the ratchet handle can be painful when trying to break something loose. It's better than traditional craftsman ratchets but not as good as the rounded handles from some other manufacturers. With the socket in the ratchet they are thicker than a ratcheting wrench and only a bit thinner than a normal socket and ratchet. There isn't a 1/2" ratchet available or any sockets larger than 19 mm or 3/4". With that said, the good: The set is complete with every conventional socket one would need to work on cars from 3.5 mm to 19 mm and from 5/32" to 7/8". The ratchet action is 5 degrees. Better than traditional ratchets (> 7 degrees) but not as good as fine toothed ones from other manufacturers (3.5 degrees.) The set includes adapters to use traditional sockets. I would really want to rate this set as 3.5 stars. It's better than 3 stars but it doesn't get 4.

    I had to pickup a set of these once I saw them. Where were these 20 years ago? The set I picked up were made in USA, high polish, and came in a nice plastic carrier. All sockets and wrenches checked out fine and it was a joy to use these the first time. Worked as expected with no issues and made me glad I had made the purchase.

    This is one excellent tool set! This is a very useful set to have with you in the car. It comes in a handy case that can easily slip into the car without and problem. It is a mechanics tool set consolidated into a small case. I use this set constantly!

    Last fall I bought a Max Axess socket set, with case during a Craftsman tool event sale. I had been wanting a nice 1/4 and 3/8 drive socket set, with its own carrying case for those grab and go situations that seem to pop up, and this set seemed to fill the ticket. Keep in mind, this is not an ordinary 1/4 or 3/8 drive set, they are the 1/4 and 3/8 drive equivalent. The sockets, extensions, and the ratchets are all hollow, so that if you are threading a nut onto a long bolt, you will never have the bolt hit the bottom of the socket. Because of this, there is no need for deep well sockets, as the extra part of the bolt can just poke through the head of the ratchet as much as necessary. This feature was a big plus for me, as sometimes I need a deep well socket, yet other times, like for starting a nut on a bolt, a standard depth socket is required. I really, really like the design of the sockets, as they are all 6 point, so there is no rouning of the flats of the nuts/botls, and they all have some sort of shoulder built into them, so that while the threads of the blot can pass through, the bolt head, or nut cannot. This makes starting the nut in hard to reach areas easy, as the socket holds the nut from pushing too deep into the socket (unlike a deep well) while still allowing you to thread it deeply onto a bolt (think the long threaded bolts that clamp a chain link fence to the posts). The ratchets themselves are very, very smooth, fine tooth, and seem strong. Instead of a square drive, that sticks out from the ratchet head, the ratchet head has kind of a splined opening, that grabs the outside of the socket, which has matching splines cut into it. The only real disadvantage I can see to this system, is that the sockets, extensions, and ratchets are a bit 'fatter' because of this. In very tight quarters, a standard 1/4 or 3/8 drive ratchet might fit better, due to being thinner. The only other comment I can make, is that this system does not have the ability to lock the sockets onto the ratchet, which are released when you press a button, like my Craftsman 1/2 drive does. For my uses this is neither an advantage nor disadvantage, as Craftsman picked a good balance between socket retention, and ease of removal. I can't quit before I mention the case. Mine came in a red storage/carrying case, which is about as good a case as I have ever seen on a socket set. While not the 'smallest' it is sturdy, and the layout of the tools is well thought out. The latches are some of the best I have seen on a non-professional case. They snap open and closed easily, and look like they will be quite durable. The only reason this isn't a 5-star set, is because it doesn't have the 'Made in USA' stamp most of my other Craftsman tools have. While I know it is a sign of the times, with things manufactured all over the world, I still will buy USA made stuff, given the choice.
