I decided to buy batteries by the amp hour - Ah. Divide the price by Amp hours to get an idea of the battery's utility, assuming more is better. For some users, more batteries is better. You decide. I put a lot of work into collecting this data. Sears does not make it easy!
Nicad has 16 cells all in parallel = 0.9 Ah. Compact Lion has five 1.3Ah cells =1.3 Ah. The Hi-capacity is a 'double stack' of 1.5 Ah cells wired in series-parallel = 3.0 Ah. The compact XCP has five 1.5 Ah cells = 1.5 Ah. The high Cap XCP is a series-parallel double stack of ten 2.0 Ah cells = 4.0 Ah.
On a raw power basis, the High cap XCP is the best value, and the compact XCP is the worst (using sale prices). Since LiOn is newer technology I recommend the extended 3 year warranty. NiCad has the highest cost per Ah but it is foolproof.
"Warranty" requires you mail in the bad battery and if you pester them enough they will eventually send you a gift card for the purchase price plus the warranty price.

POOR QUALITY - POOR SERVICE
I HAVE BEEN USING THE C3 SYSTEM FOR MANY YEARS WITH THE NI-CAD BATTERIES...AND THOUGHT VERY HIGHLY OF IT. SEVERAL MONTHS AGO ALL MY BATTERIES DIED WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OF EACH OTHER..SINCE THEY WERE QUITE OLD AND HAD SEEN A LOT OF USE I COULDN'T COMPLAIN. I BOUGHT TWO NEW REPLACEMENTS.. THEY BOTH SHOWED AS "DEFECTIVE" AFTER ONLY A FEW WEEKS.THE LOCAL STORE REPLACED THEM ONLY AFTER A DEBATE BECAUSE THEY WERE PURCHASED ONLINE. FIVE MONTHS LATER THEY BOTH DIED.WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED.
I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO STEP UP TO THE LITHIUM BATTERIES.BOUGHT TWO DRILLS SETS BECAUSE IT WAS ONLY A FEW DOLLARS MORE THAN JUST BUYING TWO BATTERIES.CAN YA BELIEVE IT? THE FIRST ONE I TRIED ONLY TOOK THE CHARGE ONCE AND NOW IT SHOWS AS "DEFECTIVE"
CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE -- GOT AN APOLOGY AND PLACED ON HOLD FOR 20 MINS..THEN I HUNG UP AND SENT AN EMAIL....GOT ANOTHER APOLOGY AND A SUGGESTION TO CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE
HERE I AM NOW WITH SEVERAL C3 TOOLS ; SIX CHARGERS AND SIX DEAD BATTERIES!!!

The item did not match my charge unit, there is a lip on the battery post that would not let the battery sit on the charger. Very disappointed. Had to buy the older much heavier battery.

Poor quality!!!
Bought this battery 6 months ago and already dead after first heavy use. I always use it for light duty jobs like drilling a few **** and and installing door knobs. Then when i used it for the very first time on my 5 1/2" saw to cut 2x6 boards ....it died and would not charge back up. I mean only after 4 cuts and the battery couldn't even handle it, i expected more out of a lithium-ion....
