The permanent magnets hold the tray to metal surfaces and the rubber covering resists scratching. The raised sides keep small parts and tools inside and the magnets keep the metal parts like bolts and screws in easy reach. This is good for your home or shop.

Good basic tray but would like more powerful magnets and deeper September 20, 2010
This tray is great and I use it just about every time I work on my car. It is basically two big magnets behind a tray. I do think it would have been better to use some rare earth magnets (coated in rubber) to be a little stronger, or to have a deeper dish. I think it is too shallow. Over all it is great to have and a major headache saver.

A Great Product ,But!!!!! June 21, 2010
I recently purchased the magnetic tool tray. I have used these types of trays both in the machinery manufacturing business as well as in my hobbies of auto repair,and old car, truck , and tractor restoration. Most of my other trays had been Bluepoint, or Snap On. This is my first sears tray. One big difference between the others and this one is the depth of the tray. The other brands are probably 1/2" or more deeper. For the most part that is not a concern, unless you are short on trays and overload them with tools and removed parts. I feel it is better to have a couple trays , one for small tools, and the other for removed parts, so with that in mind, the tray not quite being so deep is not really much of a factor.
Based on what i have just told you i would likely have rated this piece at a 4, possibly a 5 star product. HOWEVER, being very patriotic, and being involved in American Manufacturing, i would have liked to have seen this product MADE IN USA!!! There are still a lot of us around who have deep pride in the products we americans can produce, and there is no reason why this cannot be another.
Please Sears, bring back American Made Pride.
Again, i would likely buy another tray and would be pleased with every aspect execpt for one, the origin of manufacture.

good size,strong magnet,respectable finishWe have used these trays for several years. They adhere nicely to cars while we work on them but are also useful for tool box organization, sewing and other crafts. So far we have not had a problem with any of them.

good size,strong magnet,respectable finishThe Craftsman magnetic tray is one of those products that you wish you had after u knock, bump, lose, or drop the parts you need to but back what you took apart. I use this every time I work on anything, Im notorious for droping a nut on the floor or in the grass and spending 2 min. looking for it. If I ever find it. Since this I havent lost or drop one nut, bolt etc for my motorcycles or projects. Resulting in money and time saved. Magnets are strong and dish is deep if I would have bought this sooner Il bet Id have saved 2-3 hours and a couple hundred on expensive oem motorcycle parts over the years

My sons came over to visit and notices the craftsman magnetic tray and mentioned that they wished they had one of those..... Well, they got one for a christmas present!
