These long handled 3/8" drive ratchets are highly favored when I select a ratchet to do work with. The long handle provides more leverage than the shorter 3/8" drive ratchet. These ratchets are included in my 3/8" drive Craftsman Industrial socket sets and they get quite a workout. The ratchets are the only part of a Craftsman socket set I have ever broken and I have used Craftsman hand tools for over 30 years. An improvement would be fully machine gears inside and adding a dust cover.
I've had my 3/8" ratchet for over ten years, over which time I used it on at least a weekly basis. FInally, the ratcheting mechanism showed some signs of wear. I took it in to get it replaced and found the new ones were made in china. The salesman mentioned he had many of the new 3/8 and 1/2 returned due to failures. At the same time, the price is still the same!
This is sad. I always went for the USA made Craftsmans hand tools. Now I'll have to find a new company to buy ratchets.

The only reason I bought this ratchet, because my other craftsman ratchet of 15 years finally broke (locking mechanism).

Love the ratchet, worked flawlessly, I needed a ratchet just before Christmas while out of town and I went to Sears to get one, I saw the extended length 3/8 drive ratchet and since I already had two of the shorter ones at home I decided to purchase the longer one, love it, so glad I bought it.

i bought a 260 pc mechanics tool set . when i was just fixing cars in my driveway it worked well, but i still broke the 3/8 drive ratchet so i went to replace it and they took my long hanld and gave me a referb short and said thats what i had to accept took it home and the same day it started skipping went back to the store and they said it was referbed so i had to take another referb, that one finnished the job but the next time i worked on a car it started skipping. so i went back to sears and they said i had to take another referb cause mine was a referb took that one home and it too started skipping. then i got a job at a shop fixing cars and wanted a new ratchet so i went in and they said i had to take another referb so i said i wanted to talk to the store manager and the lady said just go get a new one then. so monday my first day i used the crap outta it and on tuesday it started skipping on wed it would just switch between forward and reverse on its own and thur it was locked it wouldnt go fwd revese and wount ratchet, so i returned it and they gave me another new one so fri it worked fine but sat it started skipping again. i dont use a cheater bar or use it on super tight bolts i have impacts for those i just cant belive how cheaply they are made now. so went back to sears and was told they have a professional line of ratchets that are way better constructed and and i should BUY one of those cause they cant keep replacing new ratchets every couple of days. what a joke i talked to my snap on guy and he said he would bring me a new ratchet every day if i brake it every day and said if i broke one more than once every week he would give me gift certs for the price of the ratchet every time to use on other tools......so long crafts man hello snap on. but you probly wont be able to read this cause crapsman wont post it too sad, they had a great name and its gone..... they are only conserned about their bottom line and not their quality or rep. oh and snap on, mac, and matco all have life time replacements on all their products including tool boxes and air tools, take that craftsman that only replaces hand tools. i called craftsman and left a message for them to call me and i still havnt heard back from them, probly cause it will cost them money not make them money, thanks for nothing!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the worst ratchet Craftsman has its name on. The plastic selector lever is cheap and lightweight. Pawl in the ratchet body will reverse without warning. Ratchet can't handle more than 80 ft lbs without stripping the gears. Handle kills your hands due to the slim design. Horrible horrible design overall. Harbor Freight has better ratchets than this one, cheaper too.

This ratchet used to be a great tool, but now all of them are made in China. The quality, finish and feel of the ratchet have all suffered and I'm sure the longevity will be far worse than older versions. The price hasn't changed though.

Standard Craftsman ratchets had been of suspect quality for the past decade or so as the design and quality of materials had been progressively cheapened to squeeze every penny of profits out of them. I had quite a few of these in my toolbox back in the 90s but after receiving a couple of warranty replacements that just slipped after a few hours of normal use, I finally caved and spent more money on a better tool. Now, to add insult to injury, the MBAs running Sears/K-Mart have decided to farm these out to China. Just beware if you go to Sears to swap one out, you're VERY likely to receive a Chinese made replacement. One store I walked into recently had NOTHING but the Chinese made ones! What an insult.
