The Kenmore Serger Sewing Machine is a must to have for sewing. April 01, 2011

I have owned a Sears Kenmore Serger Sewing Machine for about nine years now. I feel it is a must to have for sewing. The problems I have with this serger are threading the threads. They can get complated at times. I leave my threads threaded at all times. If I break a thread I don't have to go thru the process of trying to get it rethreaded and if I need to change colors of the thread I just follow the old color that I already had threaded. It is a wonderful machine and will give me a professional look when I am finished sewing. I use the serger on a lot of different projects. I have made slacks, dresses, skirts, pillows, drapes and many other projects. My mother-in-law first introduced this machine to me. She owns a shop where she makes vestments for the churches and all of her vestments look like they have come from a high end clothing store somewhere in New York City. Once I tried her machine I was totally hooked and had to have my own. Every project that I have done I will get complements on and I tell people that the Kenmore Serger has made a major difference in my sewing and finished products. The machine takes a lot of hard work out of my jobs. My serger does not require much work to maintain. I do keep a cover on it at all times when I am not using it and I feel that that helps keep it clean and each and every time I turn it on it works well for me. It does not make a loud noise and if kept clean and maintence kept up on I feel it will last me for many, many years to come. I have recommened this product to many of my friends.

small, noisy, overpriced for level of quality April 13, 2011

This machine is noisy and not as easy to thread as some other models on the market (the lower looper has no threader mechanism: it must all be done with tweezers through two open panels), but it is compact and does the job adequately.

It doesn't feel like a solid, well-built machine when stitching: much like driving an old car that needs work, vs. a newer luxury model. I wouldn't try heavy duty usage or very thick fabrics.

This machine is not worth more than $200; if you can get it on sale or at a discount, great -- but otherwise, you can get better machines with more accessories and easier threading for the same price, like the Brother 1034D.

Kenmore Serger sewing Machine is easy to use November 18, 2011
    By rosecreek2 of Athens, Georgia
    Pros:
easy to use, perfect stitching, compact,Gives a professional, finished look.
    Cons:
Hard to figure out threading.,loud, makes too much noise.,hard to change neddles

I have had my  serger for a few years. I love the way it is so easy to use . However the only problem I have had it changing the neddles. I find that the screw in which you loosen the neddles is hard to get to. I haven't been able to use if for I can't change the needle. I hope to find an off set screw driver that will help me to change the neddle. I found that it sewed through thick fabric with ease and help me make a ball gown with puffy sleeves.

Kenmore Serger 16677 - a real workhorse for the serious sewer November 07, 2011
    By Mimi94 of Miami, FL
    Pros:
    easy to use,perfect stitching,compact,Gives a professional, finished look.,Good Video
    Cons:
    no thread/cut off fabric catcher

I have several sergers and the Kenmore 16677 is my go to machine for clean and consistent stitching!  Threading any serger the first time is challenging but the DVD  which accompanies the serger  shows how to thread it- as with all sergers that I have used changing threads on the two loopers should be done by tying the new thread onto the one already threaded thru and running it through the machine- the easiest way to change colors- you do have to thread the two needles but those are easy to do.

This machine  is not a fancy  multi foot wonder but truthfully I really just want it to work  on stretch fabrics with a minimum of fuss. The less complicated the better for those who do lots of serging  or production sewing. This Kenmore for the price  is  a great machine ...simple and efficient and produces a great stitch.

I solved the  movement of the machine on my table by placing it on  a piece of matting that is used to keep a rug from slipping (I found some placemats on sale that were this rubberized mesh) and that works perfectly. The machine stays on place on my dining room table.

I have been using sergers since the mid 1980s- It is important not to force any fabric jam through - not to depend on the upper knife to slice through thick heavy fabric without pretrimming and to treat every machine with care. This machine sews all thicknesses without a problem - has enough power to do so.

Overall this is my favorite- I just bought a second one to keep threaded with black thread!
