Difficult to clean burned-on foodI prefer gas ranges, but we decided to replace our existing electric cooktop with another one to ease the amount of work that would have to be done. That said, this is a beautiful, shiny, modern-looking cooktop. The big flat surface is nice for temporarily holding items while you're doing your preparations if your kitchen is short on counter space.
The cooktop is fairly easy to install if you're replacing a cooktop with the same dimensions. We had to get a carpenter in to slightly enlarge the old opening, though. If this is for a new install, make sure you have plenty of clearance on either side so your pan handles will extend to the sides and not stick out towards the front of the range (where a small child might be able to grab it and pull the pan down). During the first few times you use the cooktop, you may smell something burning, which I suspect is some sort of machine oil that's left on the range during manufacturing. It goes away after a few uses, though.
Easy to control heat, although if you're used to gas ranges, you'll have to adjust to how non-instantaneous the heat is on an electric range. There's a nice red warning light, located just below the knobs, that comes on when the cooktop is hot enough to burn or cause damage so you don't accidentally put something on the cooktop or touch it while it's still cooling down. You want to get in the habit of not leaving plastics or flammable items on cooktops, anyway, just in case of electrical shorts or if the light doesn't work.
While the shiny, black surface is very attractive, you need to take extra care not to create scratches. You don't want to use a scouring powder or steel wool to clean, and you want to be careful about sliding pots and pans around. While the cooktop is generally easy to clean because it's flat, you want to make sure you don't boil over or spill food material on the range during cooking; the food material will burn onto the cooktop and become difficult to remove. They sell special cleaners online that will remove it, but I haven't tried one, yet.
Overall, we love our cooktop and would get it again.
