    Reasonable solution to an ugly problem March 29, 2012

    When we replaced an old stove/microwave unit with a separate stove and microwave/range hood, we found an ugly patch of bare, greasy drywall between them. This "range hood backsplash" looked perfect. Sure enough, it matches the finish of our black appliances and covers the ugly area. All we needed were 4 matching flathead screws (not included). Great! But ... it's not actually 30" wide, so there's a gap on both sides where it doesn't quite meet the cabinets. Worse, it's 24" high. There's only about 18" from the bottom of the microwave to the little backsplash above the counters, so that's all we needed. Below that, there's an outlet and plug for the stove - so we are going to have to cut the metal backsplash to clear the outlet, to get it to lie flat against the wall. Warning: make sure you order the right one! There are 2 models, with different colors on each side. It's not obvious which one you're ordering - triple check before you order. I ordered the wrong one first, then ordered the right one. My credit card was charged immediately for both. But when I canceled the first order, I was told that it would take 3-5 days to cancel, and then ANOTHER 3-5 days to credit my card. Why isn't it just as fast for a credit as for a charge?

    The sheet is not much thicker than heavy duty aluminum foil, or a thick piece of paper. If you use screws to attach it to the wall, the sheet buckles; does not stay flat. A thicker sheet of steel would stay flat. The surface seems seems fine, we don't expect any problems in that regard. We're disappointed, the ones my mother and grandmother had were thick and had a finished 'raised-bead' around the edge. Once again, this is just a very thin, flat piece of painted sheet metal. I will probably buy a couple of pieces of sheet metal that have some body and paint them. Not happy, but we need them for the moment, it's a rental house.
