The Good and The Bad December 23, 2008

Date of Purchase: 12/5/08 Delivery: 12/8/08 Date of Review: 12/22/08 (will review again in six months) My husband and I did an extensive review of other washers and dryers. We called friends and family to ask what they used and what brand they preferred. We checked consumer reports, scanned through hundreds of customer reviews, and it all came down to Whirlpool and Bosch. We went with the Bosch washer for several reasons. The Good Reasons 1. 2 year warranty. You don't need to purchase it through Sears, which is expensive on it's own. 2. Durability. We heard from friends and family members that Bosch was the best, long lasting washing machine we could buy. 3. Energy Saving: Uses less water and less detergent. Though you do have to use a special detergent for the front load, which is a little more expensive. The plus side is you only use about 2 tablespoons for a full load and less if it's smaller. 3. Features. There are so many of them. First lets start with the buttons and then the dial. Buttons: Start/Pause and Delay Start- that means you can actually add laundry you may have forgotten about in a front load washer! Of course the Delay does have a time limit by about ten minutes. Eco/E- reduces the energy used for cycles on hot or warm. The draw back is it adds time to the wash cycle (which I list below). I'm not sure how adding time saves energy, perhaps it is using less gas to heat the water. Rinse Plus- adds an extra rinse cycle. Heavy Duty- helps wash heavy stuff like rugs, blankets, and very soiled clothes. Spin- you have several choices. Max, Reduced, Gentle, and No spin. The clothes come out almost dry with Max, though I think it can be a little rough on older clothes or clothes with less durability--seams that weren't sown properly, or cheap material. The spin cycles are really quiet compared to the laundry mat ones I've been using, which sound like they are taking off down the runway. On a sturdy surface (we have it in our basement on concrete) it makes a slight whirring sound. Our skittish cat can sleep on top of it without being disturbed. My mother's old landlord purchased Bosch washers, she said if it isn't balanced correctly, it will actually move across the room because the spin action is so powerful. So make sure it's balanced! Dial (separated into 4 sections): A. Regular/Cotton Cold cycle 58 min Warm cycle 58 min or 1:15 (if using Eco/E) Hot cycle 58 min or 1:15 (Eco/E) B. Permanent Press Cold cycle 56 min Warm cycle 56 min or 1:12 (Eco/E) Hot cycle 56 min or 1:12 (Eco/E) C. Delicates Silk cycle 41 min Handwash cycle 26 Wool cycle 33 Jeans cycle 53 min or 1:09 (Eco/E) XXtraSanitary 2:02 D. Special Programs Soak cycle 2hrs Refresh cycle 15 min QuickWash 25 min or 41 min (Eco/E) Kids Care 1:28 or 1:45 (Eco/E) - I'm not a mom, but I don't know if I'd use this long of a cycle just to wash my kids stained clothes. E. OFF- you can turn it to off, so the digital lights are no longer on. 4. Capacity. Love the amount of clothes you can fit in there. 5. Easy to Use. If you can't figure it out, the directions booklet is simple to follow. 6. Detergent area. We didn't like the pull out drawers for detergent on other brands. They looked junky and I imagined spilling much liquid detergent on the floor while trying to push the drawer back in. The Bosch we picked has a flap you lift up. There are little curved knobs on the ends that allow it to pop in and out easily. I like this better because if the flap were permanently broken, I could still add my detergent. The Bad 1. Price. It's expensive but hopefully will last ten years like we researched. I suggest buying during sales like Black Friday or After Christmas specials. Another way we got around the price was by purchasing a miss match dryer (not a Bosch) for $200. It only takes 35 minutes to dry our clothes because the spin cycle gets them so dry. So in the end we are saving money on our electrical bill. 2. Spin. Unlike a non-digital top load washer, you can only select a wash cycle by dial and speed of the spin by button. If you get the spin speed wrong, your sort of stuck. For instance, I washed a feather pillow in the gentle cycle and also changed the spin speed to gentle. The pillow came out soaking wet. There isn't a way to only do a spin cycle, which you can do on non-digital top loads by skipping over the wash and rinse cycles. I instead used the quickwash 25 min cycle and put the spin at reduced. So basically, I had to wash the pillow all over again and felt guilty for wasting water. The second time it did come out almost dry. 3. Smell. We heard about the smell everyone complains about. Who wants to spend $15 on a little tablet that will deodorize the washer? Not I. Our washer started to get a smell but we discovered several ways to combat at a cheaper price. a. Buy a big bottle of generic brand white vinegar, which is about $4 or less. Put the vinegar in the detergent holder to the full mark and do a quick wash cycle. It kills smells, mold, and calcium build up. b. If you're really cheap, like we are, try leaving the door open. This allows the inside to dry out and we haven't had a smell since. 4. Size & Door. It's a large machine and the door opens from Right to Left. No way to change that. I hope this helps you decide on the washer that's right for you.

    Bosh Nextt 800 September 23, 2008

This is my third front-loader and I returned it having to take the 15% hit (in case you are unaware Sears charges a 15% re-stocking fee on most appliances - can't blame them just would have been more cautious with my decision making). I simply couldn't see living with this washer for any length of time. Although Bosch has a good reputation, this washer seems antique compared to other front loaders. For instance, it has the detergent dispenser located on top of the machine which prevents the machine from being stackable and also is inconvenient to use. My old front-loader as well as most front-loaders have a drawer type detergent dispenser which is great as you can purchase the larger detergent bottles with the detergent dispensing nozzle and sit the bottle on top of the washer and don't have to get your hands soapy while during laundry (I used a sharpee to mark a line on my LG detergent tray and knew exactly how much detergent to add by using the nozzle only) - with the Bosch I still use the nozzle but have to use the cup to measure the amount of detergent and no matter how hard I try I aways seems to have a bit left on my hand and in the cup - this is a big thing for me as I tend to throw in a load on my way out the door and do not like to have to stop and wash my hands -- my first front-loader (Maytag) had the exact same type of dispenser and it just seems like going backwards with the older type of dispenser. Also, Bosch says this machine has an automatic uneven load feature which sounds good until you use it. It won't let you know that anything is wrong (My LG would display UE and you could manually move the clothes around or add more clothes) - the Bosch display reads READY but your clothes might be soaking wet and you don't know what part of the cycle things went wrong - your only choice is to rewash the whole load as it doesn't have a spin only cycle (which most of the newer front-loaders have - especially in this price range). My husband actually picked this one out based on reputation and even he was disappointed with the lack of features that this machine has. Most manufacturers have added several features due to consumer complaints on front-loaders (LG has a tub clean cycle, and most have a spin only cycle) - Just be sure to do your research and compare prices - we returned this one and got a less expensive Samsung (due to the silver technology and based on Sear's consumer reviews) it actually has more features then the Bosch.
