Our family of five has owned this washing machine of over a year now and I thought this would be a great opportunity to share our experiences.
Before I pulled the trigger on this purchase, I had done month of research to determine the root causes of most consumers nightmarish experiences with front loading washing machines. Having used top loaders all of my life I was most worried about the reports of rampant and uncontrollable mold and mildew stench. How could so many machines be produced on an annual basis that would soon become incubators for mold and mldew? The world was not making sense to me. Consumers screaming at the top of their lungs "I wiped the seal and left the door open!" and "I used the recommended amount of detergent on the bottle!?!".
Here's the bottom line with most if not all front loaders: Don't use too much detergent.
Question: What is too much?
Answer: The amount indicated by the detergent manufacturer.
Question: How can this be?
Answer: Because they want to sell you soap and have a vested interest in how much you purchase.
In our house, we use 2T of HE detergent per load. The cloths come out clean and reek of the perfumes they use in the detergent. The amount we use is plenty. Your mileage may vary but please do yourself a favor and lighten up on the amount of detergent you use. More is not always better in most cases, and that is especially true with detergent and front loading washing machines. In fact, if your washer doesn't rinse out all of the detergent you generously applied, can you call your cloths clean? Overuse of detergent is the number one culprit of all mold and mildew problems.
If you are inclined to use fabric softener, either rethink that decision entirely, learn to use tiny tiny amounts or learn to utilize vinegar. Fabric softener has a tendency to cause builup which will be then become an anchor point for mold and mildew.
Wipe the door and door seals when you are done for the day. Leave the door open. Wiping the seals removes any lint from the drain channel area and removes standing water. I have had a baby sock slip in there on one occasion. Keeping the door open helps to dry out the drum and greatly reduces the chances of mold/mildew growth.
Even if you follow the above procedures you still need to perform a tub clean cycle. The manufacturer suggests once a month, I have a tendency to do it about once every two months. All you need to do is fill the bleach dispenser with bleach and let it go. It takes awhile, but it is thorough.
My cloths come out white, bright, and smell great. I have never ever sniffed one molecule of mold/mildew in this washer and I stick my head in there on a regular basis to check.
Now that you know how to successfully wash cloths in a front loading washing machine, I would recommend you buy this one. The design allows for ultimate control of each and every load if you require it. Many temperature settings, soil levels, and spin speeds to choose from. If you have a favorite setting for the majority of your everyday loads, you can program it and save it for recall every time you do a load. Basically, you add your cloths, add your 2T of HE detergent, push the big knob to turn the unit on. Push the saved program button, and push the big knob again. Walk away and listen to the music when the load is done. Simple.
This unit does not eat cloths. It will not vibrate across the room or cause a frequency harmonic to destroy the framing structure of your house. This unit will not wash cloths by itself. This unit has required intervention on two occasions before it could go into the spin cycle. Both times were due to heavy water logged items such as pillows or fleece sweaters or both. This is great in that the unit will not damage itself trying to wring water out of 20 lb water logged pillows. Kudos to it.
This unit is very quiet. It does make a bit of noise when it engages its water pump during spin cycles. You really need to see this thing when it starts to spin. It's amazing that this unit can spin at speeds usually associated with laboratory equipment.....or car engines. When its spinning, all you can hear is a hum. Trust me, this thing would be toast if it vibrated. The centrifugal force exerted on the clothes would cause the drum to torque the motor so badly it would fail quickly. Nah, don't buy the vibration stories. When you finally pull the cloths out you'll be impressed with how much water has been removed. Synthetic clothing such as Underarmor or warm up pants will be virtually dry. The things with the most moisture left in them will be pillows and bath towels. But even those will have a severely reduced water content compared to items spun in a top loader.
I have noticed a decrease in the amount of electricity and oil used. I'm not saying that this product will have you rolling in dough based on reduced electricity/oil/gas/water usage, but I'm saying that it is more efficient than the 11 year old basic no-frills top loading Kenmore that I pummeled into submission but yet wouldn't have the common courtesy of dying a proper death and would rather wait till the most innopportune time to pass......which it never did............thankfully. Yeah, more efficient than that one.
Buy this unit with no trepidation in your heart or mind. Use it the way it was meant to be used, but don't abuse it with too much soap or lack of basic maintenance. Enjoy.

Yesterday I gave away my less-than-a -year old LG front loading washer away to a friend whose washer broke. I am thrilled to be able to go back to using a non-energy efficient top loading Maytag! After researching washers in **************** I purchased the LG. It takes FOREVER to get laundry done if you have lots of loads. My husband was happy for me to give the waher away as well because all of his white underwear are now dingy grey. I used the correct amount and types of detergent and fabric softener so that wasn't it. The clothes spin out weel so there's less time in the dryer but lots more wrinkles to get out of the dress shirts. The LG was an expensive mistake in trying new technology. After 32 years of marriage and washing clothes with 3 kids and huge messes, I'm happy to use the old reliable Maytag. When our son was younger I washed lots of things -- nails, knifes and even a dead bird-eeeewww.

brand consciousI bought this LG WM0642HW in Feb (2009).The first problem was the WM0642HW on display in the stores had the Forced Water Recirculation Spray Nozzle in the top of the door seal installed on them. That was the reason i went with the LG instead of the Kenmore Rear Controls Front Loader. When my LG was delivered it did not have the recirculation nozzle feature installed.Only after 4 1/2 weeks of back and forth questions and hastles with LG & the retailer was i finally told by "LG" that a design change had been made, & now it was too late to return the unit. No Forced Water Recirculation on your washer! So Sorry. What a blow that was for me!LG didn't change the model number or anything to let consumers know, that what was on display in stores would not be installed on new units purchased.Full loads never got fully saturated until well into the wash segment had passed. The wicking up of water was awful. Finally after 10 months of my looking for solutions to this problem, another WM0642HW owner posted that you could raise the water level stop set point by turning clockwise the set screw on the water level switch located under the top lid.Ever since i made that adjustment the washer works so much better now.It fills up to the edge of the rubber door seal instead of stopping at the edge of the interior cylinder gray baffels. How the water level was preset before at the factory, just made it's washing performance absolutely terrible. You would only get satisfactory performance with half full loads. Now i can fill the machine up,everything gets saturated at the "START" of the wash and not towards the end. I have yet had to rewash anything since i made that water level adjustment.A hundred times better it is now.But i'll finish with this.If some manufacturer releases a Rear Controls Front Loader, with a Roto-Spray Wash Recirculating Water Stream that clothing would tumble through in the cylinder. This LG will be donated.I hope one comes out soon!
The price is great. A front loader that is very quiet and has a long warranty. we almost purchased the more expensive models with steam and all the bells and whistle. But, a salesmans recommendation lead us to this.very happy now my wife does the laundry daily lifes good.
