The Low Tech High Efficent Option who needs 9 cycles anyway?
Even though I have only owned this machine for a few weeks I had to write this review in case there were others out there like me who are confused as I was reading all the reviews that ranged from 1 star to 5 stars and nothing in between. Let me first start out by saying I live in an area with very hard water where lime accumulates like gravel in the bottom of water heaters. And I realize water conditions, climate and application play a huge role in the success of a particular product in your home. Having that stated it is my firm belief that 90% of the human population believes that you should be able to start using a product without having to read the directions and get perfect results every time...and this is will explain where the extreme reviews come from. I had a Whirlpool Calypso machine for the past 12 years mostly living off borrowed time and for the most part it served its job. After wasting gas & time going to the large discount stores given very little info by inexperienced sales staff, I decided to do what my parents did many years ago...they went to Sears. I was quite pleased when I went to Sears because unlike most places today like ******** its up to the consumer to find out most about a product before they buy because the people who work at these stores are literally idiots with a part time job who could care less what you end up with. We were greeted with a very mild mannered sales guy who at first made potpourri look exciting, did actually know his stuff when it came to the different models and choices. He even had an iPad strapped to his side and after looking at the various machines was able to send them all to my email which also locked in the sale price for us until we were ready to buy weeks later after the sale was over. I was also happy he was not the kind of person who was trying to sell me the most expensive machine on the floor, rather he asked me what I wanted from an appliance first then showed me the options. After having a computer based appliance with LED displays that always adorned dreaded error codes I decided if I could get the same machine with simple dials (that are cheaper to replace) I would save myself the $300 price difference and put the money where it counts into the actual machine. This Kenmore actually had the exact energy rating of the more expensive front loading Samsung I was actually positioning to purchase without 90% of the useless cycles I would never use. I mean really how many cycles do you need to wash jeans, t-shirts and underwear? After reading though many reviews from others who had complaints about its ability to clean of course I was very nervous of its arrival, in fear of ending up with a lemon and a billion phone calls to Sears. I'm sure many people have read about reviews where people complain about smells, mildew and other issues related to cleaning clothes and internal machine quality of some front loaders and top loader machines especially those that are HE (High Efficiency) Let me dispel this great mystery for you: This has to with the type of soap and the amount of soap you put into a HE machine. You see, HE soap is designed to work with less water. If you ever tried washing something by hand using regular detergent, you know it takes a while to rinse out because the soap itself is super concentrated. Now you can put HE soap in a regular washing machine because it uses tons of water to wash and rinse, and of course you can use regular detergent as well. However since HE machines use less water, if you put regular detergent in them, your ratio of water to soap will always be off even after 2 rinses. More soap means more suds, more suds mean more residue in the machine, and more soap on your clothes which makes them easier to attract dirt and more residue means mold, mildew and other complications. And this my friends is why you have tons of reviews on here from people that hate these machines or love them. The ones that rate them 1 for quality of clean or smells are the people that do not have a clue about a simple thing like using less soap and the right soap. The week before my machine arrived I was at the laundromat and saw a perfect example of this theory in action. I saw a man put less than 12 articles of clothes into a HE machine and then proceed to pour a 12oz water bottle full of soap into the machine...there was so much soap the small window in the door was completely whitened out. Whatever machine you buy, READ THE **** DIRECTIONS when you get it!!! So far this machine has done an awesome job cleaning my clothes, it has more than met my expectations and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new machine. We also got FREE Delivery, install and haul away of our old machine and ended up paying less than $500 after everything was said and done. I would also recommend posting a page from the user manual which tells you the right cycles to use for the type of clothes you are washing....they went through the trouble of making a matrix like that to take the guess work out of washing. Why not use it?

Worst Washing Machine EVER INVENTED!

I have owned a fair few washing machine in my 44 years...and I have done a few thousand loads of laundry in that time.  I have never used a machine that is this poorly designed.  Absolutely infuriating.  The sensor, knowing that it is "smarter" than you are, decides whether to really turn on, or whether just to lock the lid, evaluate the load you have given it, wait a couple minutes while the launderer leaves thinking all is well, and then decline.  By "decline," I mean stop...does not run.  There are a whole bunch of reasons why this washer is horrible, not the least of which is that you have to do a load of bleach and water only, minimumally once a week, in order to prevent the machine from using sour water to wash your clothers.  But I digress.  Today's example is one that clearly, nobody at Kenmore thought was reasonable to occur.  My son needed something right away that unfortunately, I had put into the washing machine 5 minutes earlier.  After struggling with the sensor and waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, etc., etc., for it to grant me entry into the machine by unlocking the lid (and no, the tub was not spinning), I extracted the needed item.  Once I finished helping with my son's item, which took maybe 4-5 minutes, I returned to the machine to restart the load.  OF COURSE, the designers of the machine do not permit me to just continue the already started load, no matter how far into it you have gone...no matter how long or short of a time period it was stopped.  So, I needed to restart the medium-sized load of what were now, wet clothes.  Not towels.  Not jeans.  Shorts and socks.  Well, no go.  As expected.  The machine knows best, you see.  The machine turns on....senses....apparently rejects the load, and turns itself off.  In the past, I have been able to bypass this by switching the setting to "bulky" or else "heavy," the dinstinction between which word/setting completely escapes me.  This time, however, it did not work.  More than once, I opened the lid and picked up all the wet and soapy items to readjust their weight distribution....still will not stay on (turning off, again, after waiting a good 20-30 seconds)...the machine knows best.  Oh, and by the way, the "low water technology" might just as well be called "no clean technology."  Items go through the entire wash cycle and come out with completely dry areas on them.  And do not even attempt to do a load containing only one or two items.  Machine knows best and rejects it.  You have to grab clean stuff and stick it in with the load.  Really, whoever designed this machine never did one load of laundry in his or her life, and clearly does not care about those who will.

upset, worst machine ever!!!!!!!!!!!

I was so excited to get this machine, it worked for 1 1/2 month and I only have it for less than 3 month. The waster is not working anymore, it will stop after wash, I did not think of getting a warranty because why would a machine not work for so long??? WORST PART IS IT DID!!! IT'S STOP WORKING AFTER LESS THAN 3 MONTH, I DID NOT THINK OF GETTING A WARRANT, THIS IS VERY UPSETTING. NOW I'M STUCK WITH USING THE DRAIN AND RINSE BUTTON TO WASH MY CLOTHING. THIS WAS A BIG INVESTMENT AND IT WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING IT DID NOT EVEN LAST A YEAR.

So far, so good

We bought this to replace a 15 year old GE washer. I hadn?t heard of HE Top-loaders until I bought this one, I didn?t really do my research ahead of time. But I caught up; I learned I needed HE detergent, and that it?s different than old one. I?ve done three weeks worth of laundry now, usual clothes along with a few comforters. Overall, things are clean and fresh. The only real issue was a couple of shirts in my first load of darks had detergent spots on them. I used less the next time and did the second rinse, it was a lot better. The other thing is that because it does spin so well, things are a little more wrinkled. It?s come out in the dryer but for stuff I air-dry I?m using Woolite and that seems to help. It does make different noises, esp. when the cycle starts up and it hums off and on. It?s not a problem, just different. I agree with the reviews that say to be sure to read the instructions since this is different than what many of us were used to.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Excellent Washer

This is my first HE washer, and I was not sure what to expect when we brought it home. By reading the other reviews, it seems like people either love or hate this washer. (Maybe they just hate HE washers in general, along with efficient light bulbs, electric cars, and any other new technology they deem to be a government plot.) I think that many have not read the manual, are not following the instructions, and are trying to use it like the conventional washer they are used to. That said, I have had awesome results with this washer. I have washed every type of load imaginable in it, and everything has come out perfectly clean. If you follow the instructions and let the machine do its thing, it works great. I also have peace of mind in knowing that I am saving tons of water and energy, without sacrificing performance. I'm a big fan of lower water and electric bills.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

An adjustment at first, but just read the included instructions

I use this for the delicate, two rinse cycle (for good measure) with Tide high efficiency compatible pods going in first and it's worked just fine so far. Do not overload a low-water machine. Really, read the directions that come with it. It's a basic washer. Nothing fancy. Affordable for my budget. Mine spins just great. If you're looking for a washer good for large quantities of heavy, bulky stuff, this is probably not for you.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great Washer

I purchased this item in January of 2013 after my 15 year old Whirlpool finally died. I had no idea what a High Efficiency Washer was so I did a lot of research. The idea of no agitator sounded great to me after bruising my hands removing clothes from around the agitator for 30 years. I followed the advise of several other reviewers about reading the instructions and watching the video on how to use this machine. It is completely different than any washer that one might have previously used. It sounds different, and is unlike an agitator washer in so many ways. However, it stills cleans your laundry just as well if not better, with less wear and tear. Living in Hawaii with the most expensive electricity in the US made this washer an ideal choice. This machine does a great job in cleaning your clothes. With the elimination of the agitator allows one to clean much larger loads. I am even able to wash the comforter from my California King bed, which I previously had to send out.

shreds towels/washcloths

Used this machine for four months and then noticed edges of new towels and washcloths were getting frayed and the texture not as soft. A couple of older towels had holes in them. Washing on gentle did not help. (at first, I just blamed the older towels were getting older). The spin cycle is to get more moisture out of the clothing. That is true. Because of that, the wrinkles are now half dried in the clothing and the the dryer doesn't take them out. After washing with bleach, my next load of colored had two bleach spots. I will have to say that Sears was very understanding.

DON'T DO IT!

I've had this machine for a little over a year and have been cursing the day I bought it! First of all it isn't a direct drive drum, which means it goes out of balance VERY easily, which makes the machine reject the load. So you come back expecting a finished load, NOT! Then it takes almost 1 1/2 hours to do a load. I have NEVER had a machine take so long! It makes my laundry day take two to three times longer than it used to. I am looking for a new machine....

Great washer

The video helped as well as reading the instruction. Overall good investment . I was reluctant to purchase by reading the reviews but I'm happy I stuck with my decision. The appliance manager the most knowledgeable but I did my own research.
