I've had this washer (specifically model 417.42042100) since July of 2002 & I've almost always left the door open after each load to let the washer dry out. I've never had any problems & it's never needed any repairs. I periodically check to make sure nothing is trapped in the rubber gasket that seals the door during a wash. This washer is leaps & bounds better at getting clothes cleaned than the previous top loader I had. I have the matching dryer mounted on top of this washer and the pair fit nicely in a closet. I absolutely love this washer & highly recommend it, with the caveat that it is essential to take wet loads of laundry out as soon as possible and to make sure that the door of the washer is left open after each load so as to let it dry out. I only once had a moldy smell & I did a white load of laundry on hot with bleach and the smell went away.

Purchased this Kenmore Washer in December of 2005, and had to have it replaced in June of 2009 due to the 'bearing' wearing out. It was less expensive to buy a new washer with warranty that to have the old washer fixed.
We have 2 adults, and do about 3-4 loads of laundry a week - 1 load of towels, 1 load of sheets, 1 load of colors and 1 load of whites. We follow the recommendations - use HE Laundry detergent, don't 'overfill', etc.
The washer purchased in June 2009 now needs to have the 'door boot' replaced - that's the rubber seal between the tub and door. Again, it's more expensive to have it replaced that to buy a new washer.....but wait, not quite.
This washer cost $449 in June 2009. Now that it has been 'discontinued' it costs $679....for the exact same product. Why?
Why?
Because sears knows that this is the ONLY washer that will fit 'under counter' - so if you have a laundry room with the washer/dryer installed under a counter top, you are **** out of luck. Need to replace that washer, be prepared to pay over a $200 premium for what is a piece of **** product, or be prepared to reconfigure your laundry room.
I will never, ever, ever spend another dollar at Sears, and I will tell everyone I know not to spend any money there.....what an absolute rip off.

I thought I would give everyone the chance to hear from someone who's owned this washer for about three years.
First off and foremost, it doesn't quite get the clothes "really" clean. If you've got a family, this is going to really annoy you.
I needed a washer that really works well, and this one just doesn't quite cut it.
I'm always wasting time having to take clothes over to my Mom's house to use her washer, and washing the clothes twice to get them clean. Annoying. Who wants to take the time to wash something, have it NOT get clean...then drive it somewhere else so it CAN get clean?
My Mother's 15yr old washer works better than this one. She can't even seem to get this washer to get the clothes clean so it's not just me.
I've washed items two..three times in this thing, and they still don't come out clean, No matter what the cycle or detergent. Take them to another washer, and presto bingo! Clean clothes finally.
Soooo please don't waste your money. Even if you don't have a family and a lot of really dirty clothes, wouldn't you be better off spending your money on something that works better?
I wish now I had the money I spent on this washer back so I could buy something that would really work well.
budget consciousWell, in January of 2003 we purchased this machine. We live in a condo that requires a small, stackable washer and dryer. I refused to purchase the one piece unit that has the washer and dryer attached. They are junk and I wanted something better than that. At the time our only option was this washer and dryer. We purchased them for $1100 together. They lasted us 8 years. As of last week the washer died. We had a repair man come out and tell us that he could fix the machine, but it would cost about the same as replacing the washer. The dryer as of today is still going strong and my husband and I did not want to have to purchase a new dryer. Only issue we found was its impossible to purchase another washer that is not the matching washer with the dryer. The dryer will only securly fit this machine. So we HAD to buy this machine or purchase a new dryer as well. Its a little dissapointing that the machine did not last a little longer, but I guess 8 years of dedicated service is better than some of the other reviews. I am only disappointed that I HAD to purchase the same machine again or purchase a new dryer. I refuse to purchase a new dryer when the old one is working well. So, long story short, take care of the unit the best you can, maybe it will last you 8 years like it did us. Hopefully the new one we just purchased will do the same.
looking for energy savingsWell I wrote one but it never got listed..DONT BUY...all I can say is listen to these people..this machine is horrible..buyer beware!!!To much to go on ..but plastic cover that goes over drum broke an drum sounded like it was gonna shoot out of the machine,,it scared me to actually get infront an turn off..sadly I cannot buy a washer..NOT A KENMORE..since the dryer works fine..1 point for their dryer..lol..but yhe washer ..you must research an then make your decision..good luck..:)
looking for energy savingsWhen we needed to replace our old washig machine, we decided to go with the energy efficient front loading model. It has been a few years now and we give it mixed reviews.
We switched to the energy efficient detergent: it's more expensive, but you use less of it per load. We ended up giving away all the huge containers of detergent from our old machine so as not to take a chance on ruining this one.
As for the performance, that's where it is mixed. It seems to clean well, but this washer is too small for our needs. We are really sorry that we didn't purchase a larger machine. After a load is taken out, I find water has stayed inside the gasket, along with the color catching sheet that I added, I always have to take that out. The door must stay open in between loads so that it can dry out, and even then it still seems to get moldy around the gasket. The last problem is that even though it cleans well, random loads will remain very wet for no apparent reason. I compared with a friend who bought a brand new front loader last month, and she finds the same thing. Some of her loads will finish sopping wet and she, too, cannot figure out why.So, maybe that is an occaisional problem with front loaders.
To end on a positive note, it's more convenient for me to load in the front versus the top. Just easier to reach for a short person!
