I recently purchased a battery back-up sump pump and decided on using the DieHard Platinum marine group 31. I have occasional power outages during storms (most recent outage was 7 hours) and I do not want to worry about my battery life. The battery has a great warranty and is extremely powerful, not to mention heavy!

Bought two PM1s and two PM2 this June for my 30'sailboat prior to setting off across the Atlantic for a cruise of the Med. I feed the batteries with two 135W Kyocera solar panels via power point tracking controller (I have seen as much as 18A on a sunny noon), and from my nominally 90A alternator on the engine. The first four months of my cruise everything was perfect. On crossings after a night of autopilot, refrigerator, running lights, cabin lights and electronics, the voltage would drop to 12.5V, didn't have to run the engine ever. Then the morning voltage readings got lower, and as I started to use the engine alternator to charge the batteries, I noted how quickly the voltage would climb from 12.3 up to the required bulk level of 14.8: within a minute! Started to charge the batteries individually, hoping the increased current would reduce the sulfating (which is what I suspect happened) but no luck, each of the four batteries behaves the same. No problem starting the engine, but last month, just running the refrigeration (a very efficient Frigoboat on long cold nights) would run the batteries down to 12.2V.
I have researched DieHard Platinums and Odyssey prior to purchase and was impressed with the rave reviews, only one lone voice on the internet warned that these beauties require high charging current to keep them from sulfating. And the salesman for Odyssey at a boat show said I will need a ~40A charger to properly charge the PC2150, which is PM1 in DieHard. (That would translate to something like 130A of charging current for my modes house bank, oy..) I asked him if he thought these batteries are therefore totally unsuitable for a cruising sailboat, what with wimpy currents from solar and wind chargers. He didn't want to answer the question.
Hope I can make it home next year without having to replace them in Europe. (they are under warranty)

I have two boats. I purchased batteries for both boats at the same time. One at Sears the other at a big box store. My Sears batterties are still up and holding a charge. My big box store batteries, cost more, with a 30 month guatantee, died at 30 months. I have just replaced both the big box batteries with the Die Hard platinum batteries. I saved $15 each and now have better batteries.
Overlander!I've had thus battery for 3 years now, I use it on my LandCruiser 80 Series that mostly sits, except when I go capmiong for a week or two.
The deep cycle is awesome and the deep discharge beyond belief! I once left 4 KC lights, 100W each + inside lights + Stereo + ARB fridge on all night! after 9-10 hours, jumped in the truck and started right up! Try that with any other battery!
RV OwnerI purchased a PM-1 in May, 2011 to replace an Odyssey PC2150 for dry camping in our RV. The PM-1 is a high quality Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) battery manufactured by Odyssey for Sears. The PM-1 is similar but not identical to the Odyssey PC2150. The PM-1 weighs 75 lbs while the PC2150 weighs about 78 lbs. Brand new the Odyssey measured 73 AH @ 13.02 VDC (with my Gold IBT intelligent battery tester) and the Diehard PM-1 only 34 AH @ 12.86 VDC. For my purposes the PM1 is plenty but only time will tell about durability. AGM has the advantages of being impact and vibration resistant with a very low self-discharge rate. I highly recommend a charger designed for AGM batteries like the DieHard Platinum Microprocessor-controlled Battery Charger ($90) or one of the high quality recommended chargers on the Odyssey website that cost more (e.g. ProNautic 1250, Odyssey OMAX-40AS-3B, Pro Charging Systems PS3, Charles 93-12405SP-A, etc.) A regular automotive type charger with 15 to 16VDC output will overcharge and destroy an AGM battery. One designed for AGM has an algorithm that limits the bulk/absorption charge to 14.8V with the trickle charge regulated between 13.5V and 13.8V. Your battery charger needs to be a minimum of 40 amps to properly refresh the PM-1. I believe using the 30A power converter in my RV was one reason my PC2150 didn't make it 4 years. See the three step charge profile under "Chargers" at odysseybattery.com.
a car ownerThe Diehard Platinum Marine Battery is awesome for use in our 28' travel trailer out in the woods of the UP Michigan. Holds the charge for a long time, and runs the furnace and all the equipment for self contained camping. We are very happy with the quality and power this battery has provided for the last 2 years.
