An inverter with nice features July 07, 2008

Inverters, have become a staple of RVing, boating, camping or just use in remote areas where 120 ac is not to be found. I found a need for one when I recently bought a second hand boat and wished to run my computer and wifi card from anchor. The Die Hard 400 watt unit fit right in with my energy needs. There are bigger rated (wattage) units out there that go for about the same $$ but if you look at their standby current draw you find they suck considerably more power between usage. This is a concern when you are not wanting to turn a gas motor on to charge the batteries. The added feature of seeing the battery voltage and wattage of the device plugged into inverter is helpful, this is displayed in a bright red readout on the inverter box. No doubt this takes some power for the display but the monitoring of one energy off sets that. The unit worked flawlessly right out of the box and and is very intuitive to use, with a minimum of controls. Does it work? yes I'm writing this while setting on my sailboat the laptop is charging from the inverter. Power when you need it, where you need it! It works.

Opt for a better unit. September 22, 2009

Right out of the box, the first DieHard 400 inverter I purchased did not operate.  The second one worked for a few months and then quit.  During the period it "worked", I couldn't use it with my Sears battery charger.  On the way home from races, I'd charge the small race car battery by plugging the inverter into the van for 12v power to operate the 120v battery charger.  The inverter did make the charger turn on but there was some incompatibility between the inverter and charger because the charger would not actually charge batteries.

I strongly recommend against purchasing this unit.  Try something more robust and (unfortunately) expensive.

    Pros:
    Battery Clamps,Lighter Plug,Led Readout

I bought this inverter for a small solar panel,It's more than capable of running a light or two.It has a nice led readout on the front, perfect for knowing your battery voltage and also the output wattage.Id buy another next time im at kmart, may go with one of the 750 Watt units, you can never have to many of these.Put one in each of your vehicles, and also in any emergency kit. And if your running solar panels at home or out in the woods,it doesnt hurt to have an extra inverter when the price is this great.

    Must have! August 19, 2007

Finally had the opportunity to use my inverter yesterday and was quite impressed with the performance as well as the feedback you receive from the digital readout. Initially I was annoyed by a constant beeping; then checked the manual and discovered my input voltage was low and needed to start my Prius' engine to increase the line voltage. Note: Prius engine only runs occasionally to keep batteries topped off, so that was not a big problem or fuel waster. I am ticked that I don't have to buy proprietary 12 Volt adapters for all my gadgets anymore!
