We made it work for us August 06, 2010

I also read the reviews and bought it anyway. I'm sure there are better ways to haul your cargo but our family made it work for a trip to the west coast starting in Pennslyvania...and back. I did pack all the luggage in plastic bags, and after hitting one of the worst rainstorms in recent memory in the state of Indiana..I'm glad i did. it did get wet inside the bag,but luggage stayed dry. I used zip ties to secure it in the back and tied knots in the remaing straps so i did not have to listen to them beat off the roof of the car. The first night i took the bag off of the roof so it would not get stolen. I found out I was too lazy to do this every night. I just took the knots out of the slack straps and shut that portion in the doors of our Trailblazer. I suppose if someone really wanted it....this would not have stopped them. Everything else the others are saying is true....zipper gets caught in material if you are not careful.....best if you do not need in it throughout the day(and we did not). It is already showing wear....but it did travel 6731 miles....and it is certainly not wore out yet. Like i said...it worked for us!

    Doesn't keep contents dry July 05, 2007

Why would one want a storage option that doesn't keep the contents dry?? I bought the better constructed Thule storage bag because it leads you to believe it's more water resistant. But it still doesn't keep the contents dry so i still need to put everything in plastic garbage bags. So what is the point of a better constructed bag? It leaked both when driving through rain, as well as when the car was sitting in a parking lot overnight and it rained. Oh well, I'm buying the hardcover one now.

Thule Escape II Soft-Sided Cargo Carrier 866 June 27, 2011
    via Sears.com
    By IUFan of Guilford, IN

Bought the Thule Escape II Soft-Sided Cargo Carrier 866 and just traveled 900 miles with it. Only 1 rainstorm, so I can't vouch for the water-tightness of it, though nothing inside got wet. The 2009 Subaru Forester I have has 38 inches of space of length between the front and back roof racks, and the Carrier 866 fit fine - even though the instructions recommend 40 inches. No question having both horizontal and vertical roof racks makes it easy to install and we had no movment during the 70++mph 900mile trip. No problems with the straps; they were easy to connect and after using plastic zip strips to secure the excess straps, not a single one came loose on the trip. Loading was easy, like any rooftop carrier you have to stand on a wheel or in an open doorway to load effectively. Since we drove most of the night, a lot of bugs were on the front of the carrier - came off with some elbow grease and a bug sponge. For the $129.99 sale price - an excellent buy I hope continues to perform. I opted over the lesser expensive one (the 846 for $80) after examining the two side by side at Sears; no question the more expensive one is better constructed both inside and out, better and more strapping, inside liner, etc. Looking at how many people threw theres on their roof with loose straps and lopsided loading, I was glad I took the extra time and effort to mount it correctly.

Only for larger vehicles January 27, 2009
    via Sears.com
    By STinVA of Arlington, Virginia

Before purchasing this carrier, we checked the sizing chart at Sears and it said that this carrier will fit on the Toyota RAV4, however, it is larger than the roof rack on the RAV4 can accomodate. I was unable to install to its full size due to factory installed roof rack on the RAV4. Using this product in the colder temperatures made it difficult to manipulate around items as the plastic was stiff from the cold. Due to the smaller vehicle and roof rack, the tie down straps are too long which left excessive excess to tie down to avoid flapping in the wind Despite all above, we have used this product on two seperate trips so far and have been pleased with it overall. While we have not had to use it during a heavy rain, the wet percipitation we have encountered did not penetrate this heavy plastic covering.

    good value August 29, 2008
    via Sears.com
By bremstuck of Arlington Heights, IL

We were reluctant to purchase this because of the negative reviews related to water tightness, but we did not want to store the large hard cover carriers so took a chance on it. We drove from Chicago to Nashville with a large rolling garment bag, medium sized rolling case (bigger than carry on size), folded play pen, and room for more. We encountered almost an hour of heavy rain on the way down and several hours of steady rain on the way back. There was not a drop of water inside of the case either time. It is very easy to set up although the zipper does get caught on the material easily. Some straps have tie down clips while others do not. This is frustrating because those without the clips work loose. Use a clip or something to secure them. The compact storage size is the main atteaction. It doesn't lock and you really need to take it off your car when it is empty so you need a place to store it if on vacation or similar. Overall we are very happy with it.
