Kenmore 12 gal humidifier exc. product December 17, 2008
I'm in my 2nd season with the Kenmore 12 gal. humidifier(remember, 12 gal. indicates max. output daily, while the reservoir capacity is 4.75 gal. see specs). I operated it continuously last season for 17 wks. w/o problems. I changed out the filters after 9 wks. I reccomend changing filters when they get slimy and begin to discolor. My unit typically puts out 6 gallons daily at my setting in a very dry(mountain)environment. For $149 I think this is an exc. value as it works for 2500 sq. ft. in my application.

Motor went cost is 120 to replace! February 20, 2009
I have owned this unit now for 4 years. I have a wood stove & need something big to humidify my house. The unit started off fine than slowly over the years small things occurred. Such as filling more when it not need to be filled with water, inquiring the filter to be changed when in fact the filter was fine. Until we found out the motor had went. I called to find out the cost & it was $120!! I nearly passed out knowing that is just about the same cost as the initial unit itself. Obviously, I would not recommend to anyone.

Cons:
Noisy,flimsy and cheap filtersWe have had other humidifiers and thought this one would be easy to fill but it is not. You can't see the fill line very well and if you don't get the flimsy filters in the right way it just runs and runs without putting humidity in the room. It is also very noisy. I would go with a tank one next time.

bucket fill - no water tanksCons:
Noisy,Refill often,No way to clean the fans,flimsy and cheap filtersThe pros: it humidifies my 1500 sq foot apartment, if I run it constantly on high. It does not require schlepping large tanks of water, because of the front bucket fill.
The cons: like other reviewer said - low is noisy, high is like an airplane. Have to put it at the other end of my apartment when I want to watch tv or listen to music. It holds only 1 day's worth of water. I've had it about 3 years and the fans are dirty but I can't get at them to clean them. It doesn't seem very clean with no way to filter dust and dirt from the pool of water as it leaves the humidifier. The water filters are cheap and flimsy.
Summary: I am unable to lift water tanks, so I need the bucket-fill feature. I'm not able to clean it frequently, so I'm concerned about what the humidifier is putting in the air besides water. The noise and need to move it around my apartment (to get away from the noise) is very annoying. I really hate this humidifier but do not know of any other solution that will humidify effectively without using water tanks.

Cons:
Noisy,Refill oftenHumidifier works as advertised. However it is loud even on low setting. Don't put this close to where you sleep. Previous Sears units had fully adjustable fan speeds, this one is low, medium and high. Low is loud....high sounds like an air plane. In my dry environment (Southwest) this units holds about 1 day of water....must refill every day..
