The Frigidaire Commercial 14.8 Freezer is a good investment
I bought this commercial freezer for home use. My thinking was that since they all say "they don't build them like they used to" that it might pay off in the long run to go with a commercial rated unit. The freezer is advertised as having a "heavy duty" cooling system. It is a very simple and basic unit without a bunch of added electronic features, which means less things to fail. COMPRESSOR: I removed the access panel and it has a "Panasonic DHS73C12RBU / R134A / 12.6 LRA / 1PH Made in Singapore 115V 60Hz" compressor. I Googled in that model compressor and it appears to be a well made, top of the line compressor. It runs fairly quiet in my garage with a slight hum. It made some initial gurgling sounds when it was first powered up but that has gone away after it stabilized. Initially the outside of the freezer got quite hot when the unit was cooling from room temp to freezing, but now it just gets warm when I put in items to be frozen if the compressor kicks in. This is how they are now designed to dissapate heat from coolant (no fan to fail). The 14.8 cu ft. is a nice size unit, not too big, not too small. I really like having the "Max Freeze / Normal" switch function. We turn it to Max Freeze a couple days before we plan to put in a large batch of food (beef, etc.) so freezer temp is well below 0 so new contents freeze quickly. After all is frozen we return unit to Normal and let the thermostadt keep it at ~0 deg F or slightly below. One nit I have is that the unit does not have a "Power On" indicator light (would be a small cost to the mfg). If your breaker were to trip you might not find out until it's too late. I remedied this by plugging in one of those small circuit testers that has the glowing neon lights so that when I drive into my garage I can seel at a glance that the circuit that the freezer is plugged into is powered up. The only other observation is that the freezer lid seems a bit cool to the touch, which might indicate that the mfg could have used more, or perhaps denser, insulation in the lid. Also, the unit is not "Energy Star" star rated. Perhaps this is because of the fact that you could leave the system set in the "Max Freeze" mode with compressor running 24/7 if you wanted to (commercial use). However, I don't think this unit is inefficient by any means when left in the "Normal" mode setting. After 3 months of use we are pleased with the units performance so far. I hope the commercial rating allows me to say this again in 15 years or so.
I would recommend this product to a friend.
