Surprising Space Saver
We have a small kitchen, about 12'x8'. When I first investigated purchasing this large built-in professional style Kenmore Pro Side-by-Side Refrigerator, I thought it would be crazy for our kitchen. It would definitely be worth more than anything else in the kitchen, too. About 1-1/2 years ago, I ran across this fridge at a Sears outlet store. It was a return and had some significant scratches with a large gouge in the top grill, but the price was half the store sale price, so we decided to go for it. The worst part of the experience was the delivery which we had to hire privately since the fridge is so large. We managed to crack the interior freezer door in the process, but everything else survived. The top grill was easily replaced, and I just live with the scratches. It turns out I really love this fridge, and it was probably the smartest thing we could have done for our small kitchen. The beauty of this model is that it is built-in and is only counter-depth. In the end, it takes up less floor space than our older, smaller fridge model. It has opened up our walking path considerably. Basically, we acquired a lot more food storage space while also acquiring more floor space. Our kitchen is several inches larger! So don't rule this one out just because you have a small kitchen. If you have room to build a cabinet around it, consider it. First of all, I never would have willingly purchased a stainless appliance. However, this model was only available in stainless, so I live with that. The stainless does make that side of the room appear darker than the white fridge used to. It does have nice clean lines and looks very professional in the kitchen. I think it will be a selling feature for the house. One strange thing about the exterior is that the top "grill" is not actually a grill. I think the actual professional fridges have real grills. This one should since the fridge has no other way to ventilate. That is probably a poor design feature. The interior is very bright with plenty of lighting everywhere. It is wonderful. I can see everything nicely. Because this fridge is counter depth, one thing to adjust to is the fact that the shelves are not very deep. Some people will find this to be a negative feature. I, however, think it is wonderful because I always hated pulling items off the front to reach items in the back. Nothing is very far back on this model. I can fit a 9x13" pan with handles towards the front and back of the fridge, but I daresay there are even some of those pans which would probably not fit. The door shelves are also very narrow, but they hold plenty since there are 5 spanning the tall door. The things I have enjoyed the most of all are the large drawers! There are 3 large drawers that I fill with all my fresh fruits and veggies and cheese or whatever else needs a spot. Since I can just toss things in the drawers, I don't have to worry about them sliding off each other and off a shelf. Plus, it is nice to be able to pull the drawers out for the items in the back. The freezer also has nice drawers. Very convenient. Of course, the water/ice dispenser is nice on the front of the fridge even though it doesn't accept containers as large as many other fridge designs do. This fridge is VERY quiet, and that is a nice feature. Most of the time, you don't hear it. When the compressor cycles on, there is a slight humming. The fan can be loud when you open the freezer, but usually it can't be heard outside the door. Some point in the cycle also emits a quiet chirping type noise. This is very small, though. As far as problems go, unfortunately, we required a $300 repair barely a year out of purchasing the fridge. I think it was something to do with the evaporator. There was water leaking from the top down through the fridge. Apparently, it is a common problem with these. Not that the repairman who came out from Sears had any clue what to do. (Note on Sears repairmen: Not impressed. It is not reassuring to have the guy show up and stand in your kitchen and say "hmm." when he sees your fridge. It is also not reassuring to have the supervisor who has been on the job 30 years not have a clue what is wrong, either. I think I would try a private company next time. This was the first I had not used a private repairman.) Also, we end up with water under the freezer door sometimes. This appears to be caused by water sitting in the dispenser area and then running down through the door. I know because I tested it. You would think this area could be sealed off since water typically sits here, but for some reason, it is not. Unfortunately, most appliances these days are made to die quickly. I'm guessing this will be no different. It is made by Samsung, and I'm not sure their reputation is the greatest. Meanwhile, though, I really DO love the fridge. All the features are nice, the space and space-saving are wonderful, and it has a very nice appearance.

13 repairs and it won't keep safe stable temperature
MAJOR problem with stable cooling, in our 7th month, 13th repairs, 4 entire fridge loss of grocery, food poisoning from spoiled foods due to unstable cooling system randomly ranging from 38-59 deg. major condensation in upper shelf, it "rains" on down, sears won't replace this lemon, we have to wait yet again for another part and their efforts to fix again. Sears will not support a replacement till 4 parts have been replaced. We are at our 4th part, in this new high end unit. Never never again...

Kenmore Pro Model# 40483

I have had this unit for Kenmore Pro for around 6 months. I have had everything replaced because the freezer will not keep temp. Ice melts in the ice ben and I can't get the door open to shut the ice maker off. Lost food twice and temp will rise to 26 degrees and then go back down. Yes compressor was replaced along with lots of other parts like the control board twice. Sears is replacing the unit as it can?t be fixed. I?m going to buy the Kitchenaid 48 inch. Buyer be ware on this unit as it looks good but has to many moving parts that are very expensive.

Great looks but a few problems

Bought this fridge 3 yeas ago because it looked great and had the most interior space we coudl find. But little problems like the temperature not resetting after power outages or recently a plastic part, where the water filter attaches, sprung a leak. That shouldn't happen on a 3 year old high end fridge.

So Far So Good

We Have this Refrigerator since last 1 Year. We had no issues so far. The crew from Sears did a good job installing this heavy unit in our house.

Water & Ice dispenser paddles are made of cheap plastic!

Unbelievable! This high-end appliance has the water and ice dispenser paddles made out of cheap plastic. There is stronger plastic used to make McDonald's Happy Meal toys! $341 to repair which will break again given the cheap plastic that is used!! Don't buy this appliance.

Kenmore Built-In Pro Refrigerator

I replaced my Sub-Zero Built-In with the Kenmore Elite Pro Series Built-In. At this juncture, I am very pleased with the unit. I find the Kenmore much much quieter than the Sub-Zero and anticipate significant savings in terms of electrical cost.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
