Kenmore Elite, Love It February 07, 2011

Gotta love this refrigerator! We investigated, in person and on line, and did our homework. Ramping up from knowing nothing about current refrigerators, we found that we valued energy-star rating, cabinet depth, stainless steel, bottom freezer, French doors, LED lighting. Didn't require water or ice dispenser, though this one has them. Didn't want gimmicks. Wanted good design, durability. Although cabinet depth, this refrigerator has more cubic feet than did our previous one, which was not. It displays our food cleanly and simply, beautifully lit, at eye level, easily organized. By comparison, our previous refrigerator was a dim cave in which stuff hid behind other stuff and was always difficult to organize. We (fortunately) have had none of the problems cited in other reviews. We did consider seriously the negative reviews, here; in the end we felt willing to rely on Sears' Appliance Protection Agreement, on top of the manufacturer's warranty, to address any problems we might end up having. Stainless steel is easy to keep clean; just wipe along the direction of the grain-lines, in this case horizontally. The icemaker is located wholly inside the left-hand door, leaving room for only one shelf in that door, at the bottom, for storing food. We worried initially that this loss of shelving inside the door was a disadvantage, but, truly, we find that we do not miss that space one bit, and we LOVE the resulting glorious unimpeded space in the body of the fridge. It is also nice not to have that awkward-looking hole and bulging throat into which an icemaker within the refrigerator body shunts the ice into the door; who ever thought THAT was a good design? Do not agree with other reviewers who say the dispenser is too small, or difficult to use, or drips. LOVE the full-width deli drawer within the refrigerator section. Tremendously useful for small or flat stuff that would otherwise have to be tucked in or stacked among other stuff on the shelves or the deep bins and be hard to find. Freezer does a great job. LOVE the upper slide-out drawer. Tilt-out door is a clever feature. We appreciate the LCD display on the exterior of the left-hand door, offering personal choices such as whether to light the water-ice dispenser full-time, whether to engage the door-left-open alarm, and when to do a major cool-down. Easy-to-clean virtual buttons. Icons are a bit dorky, but can be appreciated as purposely down-scale. The only thing I truly don't like about this machine is the prospect of the expensive replacement water filter. Does it have to cost that much? Owners' manual says to replace every six months, but obviously, different families will use water at different rates and different cities have different degrees of water hardness or impurities. I'm going to watch for diminished water-stream (as the manual suggests) as my criterion for replacing the filter. I am also using an in-line filter (the scheme that the previous refrigerator used) upstream to pre-filter the water in hopes of prolonging the life of the one in the new refrigerator. Will see.

... Ice maker fan is bad (Er IF fault code) April 03, 2011

This particular model is loud and the ice maker is poorly designed ... dispensing a cup of ice takes up to 30 seconds.

Woke up this morning and ice isn't dispensing b/c of an error code on the panel, "Er IF". Googled the code -- ice maker fan, mother board or controller may be bad. My fridge is 14 months old ... and 2 months past warranty.

Big oversite in manual! March 19, 2012
    via Sears.com
    By Shiara21 of Salem, OR

I bought this fridge on clearance, so I am happy with it for the price I paid. My first experience with this fridge was pretty discouraging. I bought it off the floor, took it home, plugged it in and the display read "off". So, I get out the manual and look through it, and it does not tell you how to turn the thing on!!!! I tried all the buttons, I pressed them in many combinations, etc. I tried searching online still couldn't figure out how to turn the thing on. :( So, I call the "24 hour" assistance number on the product manual (which takes me to Sears) to ask how I might turn it on and they tell me I need to call back in the morning so I can speak to a Tech support person! So much for 24 hour support, sears!! :( At this point I have already loaded all my groceries into it and moved my old fridge out so I really didn't want to wait to turn it on. Finally, after more searching I learn that I have to hold the door open and press the "fridge temp" button and the "ultra ice" button at same time. Awesome! Now it works.... Seriously, Sears should train all their representatives to be helpful in advising how to do basic troubleshooting. I expected more from Sear's service department. On the product itself, here are my thoughts: Pros- Freezer on bottom, makes produce more visible and reduces waste Looks very nice Many programmable features (like ice cube size and alarm) Drawers slide in and out very smoothly Shelves are able to slide out for easier access Cons- When set at the recommended temp the fridge freezes things in the bottom drawer. (So, I keep it at 39) LOUD!!! I thought it would be more quite since it's so new... Ice maker is the worst part, but seriously kind of disturbing how much noise it makes. Limited space. I didn't realize it at the store, but the overall capacity of the fridge is very small. (and I probably have too many condiments) Water tastes terrible!! I'm not sure if it's the filter or the lines but we have had this for almost a month and the water still has a very funky plastic taste and we use it everyday.

kenmore counter dept frig very functional, pretty, lots of space! January 05, 2012

This 21.0 Stainless steel counter dept. Kenmore Elite french refrigerator with freezer bottom has loads of space. When doors are open the lighting is bright and easy to visibly see all the items in frig. The drawer on bottom is great for cheeses, cold cuts, etc. The temperature in frig keeps veggies, fruit, and meats at a perfect temperature. We had a 26 lb. turkey and all the fixings stored nicely on the shelves and had room for all the condiments etc. We are very pleased with the ice maker too. Our large glasses are 4 3/4 in. high and holds about 11 oz. It works well with the ice dispenser. This was our first Thanksgiving with our new frig and had fifteen people over. They fell in love with the width and the beautiful stainless steel. We have a small kitchen and this fit right in. It made our kitchen seem much bigger. We absolutely love this model.  Our new kitchen sparkles with all our Kenmore products. Very pleased.

looks great, works good, water dispenser area is short December 28, 2011
    via Community Review
    By mmasher of Denver, CO
    Pros:
Gorgeous fridge fits nicely in cabinet.
    Cons:
    water dispenser area small/short

Had this for a year and it looks and works great. Make sure the door are closed, some times if you close both doors at the same time one will not close all the way, If the door stays open the ice tends to thaw and clump up. The water dispenser area only fits pint glasses anything larger you will need to tilt and use the edge of the glass or your finger to turn the water on, not a big deal and you get used to it. So far so good, over all a very nice fridge.
