when I first bought the unit I loved it ... 6 mo later it quit working and would not release my dvd.called sony and they said to ship to their laredo repair department and it would be covered at no cost. did what they said. checked web site for status update and was told cost to repair $390 I called and then all of a sudden they are claiming physical damage. I asked if the box showed damage they said no. well no help from sony they shipped it back to me and it looks as if it was dropped plates missing and two cracks..the only place this could have happened was at their facility (which they claim would never happen)after reading reviews on this unit it sounds like they don't know how to fix so they break it instead ... I advise to run as far away from this product and don't rely on sony repair to help when it comes to any warranty

FREEZES DURING PLAYBACK June 11, 2009

Unfortunately, I own two of thse units. They both have the same problem. The unit freezes while playing commercial DVDs that play perfectly on other players including other Sony models. Sony is aware of the problem with the 500 series (check the Sony website), AND SONY CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS SAID SONY DOES NOT HAVE A FIX. The reality is this: If you buy this unit, the Sony warrenty is WORTHLESS because they can not fix the unit and cannot offer any remedy. Hopefully you will discover this flaw in time to return it to the seller. The unit will play most commercial DVDs ok, but many commercial DVDs will fail 100% of the time even if you try a second copy. Would I recommend this product to a friend?: No
