Great TV for cheap!!! November 24, 2009

Ok I have been looking for a good tv for a very long time.  I've spent countless of hours of research  but I really didnt want to spend a ton of money. I thought for sure I was going to to wait till black friday to buy my tv but I saw the early sale sears was having and I got it for a cheaper price than the major black friday sales. $879.99 was a bargain.  Best Buy has a Samsung with same specs for $899 and Walmart has a sanyo with same specs for the same. The only problem is that they probably only have like 5 per store so if you wanna wait from 10:00pm till 5:00am then thats the only way you would get it. In order to really appreciate this TV you have to see it in HD. if you just hook up your regular RCA cables from DIRECTV like I did it looks like crap. Honestly I was soo mad. LOL. But then I remembered that Local channels are broadcasted in HD so I went to Walmart got an Digital Antenna for $30 and hooked it up and OMG it was like They were right in front of me!! Reviews have really helped me out picking what kind of TV I wanted. Honestly if you really dont want a super crisp picture and really dont need the HD then get the 720 its like $300 less. But I can personally say that this 50 inch 1080p was a great deal and I didnt have to wait in the freezing cold!! Thanks Sears.

Great value, but 2 minor issues. January 06, 2010

For it's price, this TV is a great value. Spacious screen, and great image quality/brightness/contrast. Can go brighter and darker than I prefer, so I can set it where it feels best. Tunes in on HDTV broadcasts like a charm, and it looks great.

The only issues with it are:

When the screen goes black, it often retains a short-term ghost image of what it was displaying before. So, for example, if your TV show held on a static shot and then dropped to black for the commercial break, you can see a faint image of the shot in the black, but usually more notable, the network bug in the corner. This ghost image only seems to be visible when the screen is all black. As as soon as any picture is back up, there are no issues, and the ghosting doesn't seem to happen during normal viewing except if you do something like leave a high-contrast menu on screen for more than a couple minutes. It's a little annoying, but ultimately not a dealbreaker for me.

The other issue is that this model of TV has LG's TruMotion enabled by default. This is where for some media, it tries to interpolate new frames in between the real ones to fill up the Hz rate of the TV, causing an overly smooth "Live TV" look. For movies, I find this unacceptable and highly annoying. The bummer is that there is no menu where you can choose to turn this feature off! Other LG models have the option, but not this one! This would have been cause for me to return the TV, but I found that since I am playing Blu-Ray movies through a PS3, I can change the output settings there to optimize for the TV so that it doesn't apply the TruMotion to it, and it plays normally.
