A great multipurpose device with excellent tech support December 04, 2009

Not only is this a very versatile device, the technical support is outstanding.  Mine works fine, but I had a couple of technical questions and suggestions, and received polite and informed answers within hours of each email.  This is rare, especially for inexpensive yet complex devices.  It was like corresponding with a friend.

The web site for this device is eclipsemp3.com, not machspeed.com.  On the eclipse site, it is referred to as the V424.  It can accept up to 8 GB microSD cards, so it does support the high capacity standard.

All the functions work as expected.  Even the text reader is functional, with clear text.  My primary interest, though was the voice recording capability, so that is what I'll focus on below.

The voice recording function supports both .WAV and .MP3 encoding.  .WAV is more convenient for programs like Audacity, which otherwise have to convert .MP3 files before they can be edited.  However, .MP3 files are around 1/10 the size of .WAV files for the same quality, so the device provides far more recording time with MP3 encoding.  Even at the highest .WAV bit rate (384kbits/sec) there is about 17 hours of recording time on the device without erasing any of the content provided with the Rubicon (mentioned in the review above) or adding a microSD card.  The quality of the built in microphone is surprisingly good.  With .WAV files, I use 384k, and with .MP3, the 128k settings.

Battery life during record seems to be about four hours (limited experience here).  However, it may get even better in the future.  For now, turn the screen brightness down to 1 when recording for best duration.  To save parameter settings before turning the Rubicon off with its switch, press and hold the play button.

    Aloha,

    Steve

If you want an mp3 player well that's about all it is December 27, 2009

I'm unhappy with this product.  I expected something more, something that at least did what it claimed.  The videos are supposedly AVI's as yet I have been unable to copy any .avi to it that actually worked.  Even after converting files using the primitive software download on their site, it still wouldn't play the files.  I've wasted just too much time on this product already.  It's a 4GB MP3 player if nothing else.  The sound is pretty good.  I replaced the cheap headphones with Philips IPOD headphones and it sounded much better.  I think it is fair to say that the videos part of it is best forgotten.

    Light, portable

no documentation for software,no support on website

Does not hold a charge.  Got it to work one time after I loaded the music on it.  Haven't been able to turn it on since.

Doesn't get any better for the price vs. features January 10, 2010
    By Stephen6789 of Duluth, GA
    Pros:
    Light, portable,microSD slot,.avi file support,external speaker
    Cons:
    .avi support requires conversion

The previous reviewers have acurately covered most of the pros and cons already.  Where else can you find these features under 30 bucks? You can't find a basic 4gb player for this price. The expansion slot is just a bonus.  Even the 4 gigs allows for hours of video or an infinite number of songs.

Half of my cons went away as soon as I went back and actually read the manual.  For instance, just plugging it in doesn't charge it, you have to follow certain steps.  And when it was fully charged, I was only getting about 3 hours of music play time.  Turns out, the backlit screen is always on by default (until I figured out how to change it), sucking battery life.  My BIGGEST con would be the video player's format.  Not only will it just play 320x240 .AVI files, but will only play them after they've been run through the converter program.  If you are downloading TV shows or movies in widescreen, the converter stretches them to fit the screen, which bothers me to no end.

    Cons:
.avi support requires conversion,no documentation for software

i have been trying now for approx. 6 hours to get videos on this machine.  1 huge problem is they don't send ANY directions on how to use the converter.  it says it will play .AVI but this is not true.  i have tried several movies and none will play.  i plan on returning this post haste.  too bad my children couldn't use this christmas present.
