I got this tractor in April '06. It's in the middle of its third mowing season. Aside from oil & filter changes, the only maintenance I've done is blade replacements each spring. I use mulching blades, so I had to buy the mulch plug. The cutting deck has 6 height settings, I use #4 (6 is highest). That keeps my bermuda at about 1.75". I use the tractor to mow my one acre lot, once or twice each week. I probably put 60 hours on it each year. Still running on all the original belts after 135 hours on the motor. 22HP is plenty of power. I have some slopes, and it has no problem with them. If anything, it's a little light in the rear end...sometimes loses some traction on steep uphill climbs if the grass is moist. I've done the maintenance by the book, and take an electric leaf blower to it after every use, to get the clippings off the top of the deck, and to get the dust out of the motor. I have only one real complaint: I don't like the design or location of the oil drain. A plastic drain tube is included with the manuals and stuff, and you're supposed to fit that tube onto the drain spout, on the side of the motor...at the bottom just above the frame rail. Once the tube is on, you can twist the drain plug and pull out, and the oil is supposed to flow into the tube, and down into your drain pan/bucket. What actually happens is that the oil seeps out of the back of the drain plug that you pulled out, then along frame rail, and then drips down onto your garage/driveway floor. Closing the oil plug halfway will help, but now you're changing oil at a snail's pace. Also, the included drain tube should be at least twice as long. It's maybe 12-14" long, and there's no place to put anything to catch the oil (because the mower deck and front tire are in the way). Nothing a rag and some patience won't cure, but worth mentioning. It amazed me last spring, and this spring, after having spent almost six months in a shed, that it started on the first try. Part of that, of course, is the Craftsman battery. Speaking of which, the rubber strap that holds the battery down is starting to crack/split...probably not the right material for the heat. I think this tractor is an excellent value, even though the mulching blades and mulch plug had to be bought separately. I'd say the gas consumption is about average. The adjustable, high-back seat is very comfortable (except for being jet black...so don't park it in the sun). Feels very sturdy, well built. All in all, a great machine.
A very good tractor, plenty of spare horsepower when needed. My last lawn tractor lasted well over 20 years. It was a Craftsman also, but not automatic.
Replace tranny within 15 hours of use. Replaced cutting blade arbor shortly after. Have a concern with being under it more than using it to cut grass. Would not recommend to anyone that wants to use attachments.
