Craftsman yard tractor is a great buy. January 06, 2010

My boyfriend bought one of these last summer. We looked at all of the local stores and big names. After seeing the Craftsman series of riding mowers, everything else looked cheap (as in 'ready to fall apart').

It was funny to us that they offered to deliver it for a charge (which we declined, instead planning to borrow a trailer from a friend) and were told "but that charge includes us putting it all together for you". We declined again. When "J" inquired about when he could pick it up and asked about what he would need to assemble on it (just before we left) the associate told him they would call when it was in stock (we knew it would be 2 weeks) and that they would put it together for him, free of charge (um, I thought that was included in the price of the delivery that we didn't choose.)  LOL

The product is awesome. It turns great, idles smoothly, cuts beautifully (even very close to his hedges). He also loves all the extras that are available for it (you'd think he was customizing a new car the way he gets excited about the add-ons!)

After doing much research I settled on this mower and really debated on it's bigger brother 25HP 48In model item no. 28890. I do think the 25HP is worth the extra 350 if you have the money because...(read below) Back on track, this mower has more then enough power, with the Kolher engine full oil pressure and oil filter I think this engine will outlast the rest of the mower with proper care. Sears has a bumper for $19 that is a must if you ask me, makes it easy to lift the front end, not hit stuff, and tear the front end off. (Did I mention my wife will be using it) Check the deck to see if it is level, I had to do some minor adjustments, plus I had to put a belt in it's proper path, manual was good help, no problems. Note: the pedal operation hydrostatic tran. works awesome compared to the 6 speed transmission, UNLESS you have hills then the hydrostatic foot pedal will spin out fairly easy b/c a little gas is a lot when you are not locked into a gear. Maybe the hydrostatic without foot control but the lever would be ok, not sure but this one spins out on even small inclines with damp grass, not good. Ok the 25HP 48Inch is worth the extra money b/c it is twin cyl. quieter and smoother running, longer life. With the 48-inch deck you get three cutting blades with 2 more inches of cut. The three blades is an upgrade more then the 2 inches. The tires are 2 inches wider. Plus, it may have an electric switch to engage the blades instead of the old level like this mower has. My wife would rather have an electric switch, not that I find it a big deal or anything.

If you can find this tractor on sale, you'll find it has much more HP and features than others at this price point. Mower cuts well, plenty of power. No complaints yet.

It cuts very nice, and at a good speed. I was surprised how fast you can go and it cuts perfectly. I like the feature to set it so you can back up with out disengaging the blade. I make the kids leave it at the setting to disengage when backing up, just to be a little safer. I have a pretty good slope in one part of my yard and have no problems with it although my old one did.
