Few problems so far February 23, 2009

I picked this mower up because Sears knocked $280 off the price during a sale, and it's one of the few hydrostatic transmission equpped mowers with decent horsepower available for under $1200. The only thing to complain about so far is the jerkiness of the dynamic braking, there's an adjustment in the owner's manual but it's not very succinct or easy to understand. If it doesn't "break in" in a short while I'll have to get it looked at. I would like to have seen gauge wheels that could be set a lot easier, as it is you have to unbolt the wheels and move them one at a time depending on the deck height you select, and do that every time you decide to use a different height selection in order to get the "floating deck" type of feature. Otherwise the speed of the tractor is good, it cuts very well leaving a nice-looking lawn, it pulls the sweeper with ease and I don't have any real complaints. It's a good choice for those not willing to pay a LOT more for a foot-pedal control transmission, but who still want decent horsepower, the 2-blade deck, and most tune-up parts and belts available at just about any Sears store.

    I Expected Better June 25, 2009

Got a good price for Father's day weekend sale. Delivery was the problem. Came on time as I was at work and my wife was there to receive it. The mower showed up without a key or manual. My wife called the delivery service line and was told it would be a week to get the manual & key so she promptly told them to take the mower with them and refused delivery. After my own "experience" with delivery service on the phone, I got them to transfer me to the local store so I could understand them better. The manager (Barbara)easily put a set of keys & a manual aside for me to pick up the next day and rescheduled delivery the next day also. The mower started right away and ran well. Decent power though not a lot more than my 17.5 LT 1000. The transmission is very "jerky" while moving from forward to reverse while my old LT 1000 was very smooth. I HATE the new seat safety switch position as you cannot even lean over to pick up a piece of trash without shutting down the engine. The blades spin without the lever engaged after mowing my yard. It took years of wear on the spring for my 01' LT 1000 to do that. After I get the carb cleaned on my 01', I think I'll still prefer it to the new "more powerful" one. Not bad for the price, but I would like to see if the Premium Hydrostatic on the 20 HP mower is a lot better. It may be worth the extra dough. If the tranny jerkiness is not a matter of break in or adjustment, Craftsman will have to do much better to get me to buy a 3rd mower from them. I may be a little picky, but the delivery problem added to the hard to please factor for me. Emergency Brake switch and deck height lever are improved over my 01' LT 1000. POWER **** TRANS. ** (still better than single speed gears) TURNING ***** CUTTING *** (better blades may do better) CONTROLS *** (I don't like the new blade engage lever or throttle location- bushes caught the throttle lever on first round.) Annoying safety switch location on seat keeps my overall to 3 stars. Average.

This is not a hydrostatic transmission! February 26, 2010
    By GeorgeMBaxter of Lebanon, OR
    Pros:
    automatic,comes with deck wheels

The other review stated that this is a hydrostatic transmission. It is not. It uses belts and pullys and is called a automatic transmission.

Head jerker, reverse, stop, fast forward, no speed control. October 25, 2009
    By PaauhauCoffee of Honokaa, HI
    Cons:
    Impossible to set a speed

Have had 2 Craftsman auto tranny mowers, liked both, still have large 48" 27 twin hp, wanted to replace 42" mower I wore out. Purchased this mower. After one tank of gas, very dissapointed with auto tranny. Reverse is fine. Neutral is a lot of lever throw. Forward is a head jerker, and it goes to fast position after a few bumps. Speed control lever has about 2" travel for zero to fast forward. Hard to set at speed you want. My other mowers had control lever throws of 6" which gave good speed control (no dead zone between reverse & fast forward). Returning this mower as soon as possible.

Very nice, drives a little slow but gets the job done. August 23, 2009
    By mkztg of Cache, OK
    Pros:
    automatic,comes with deck wheels
    Cons:
doesn't come with mulching blades, kill switch in seat

After moving into our new home with 1.25 acres we knew we needed a lawn tractor.  We got this one (automatic) to ease the ability for my almost-teen boys to learn how to drive this and help with the yard work.  The tractor seems to move a little slower then I anticipated, the back yard alone took two hours.  Much faster then if I had to push a standard mower but still seemed to take longer then it should.  The kill switch in the seat is a little irritating considering if you adjust how you are sitting or hit a decent bump while driving it causes issues.  I haven't yet had the engine cut out on me because of this yet but it has wound down and backfired.  I would like the option to disable this feature but I haven't searched for the switch yet.  We bought the extended warranty on this based on the research we did prior to purchase.  I feel its worth the cost, others may not agree but that is a personal opinion.  I'm almost ready for my first oil change, the salesman/former lawn tractor service guy suggested that we do the first oil change at about 10-15 hours of operation.  About the same logic as doing the first oil change in a car early.  It does seem to go through gas pretty quick but ...  own well.

So far this has been a buy for us.  I wish it came with mulching blades but that will be something we get once our yard actually gets better established.  I would recommend this lawn tractor.
