This is my third craftsman tractor March 20, 2011
I have shopped for tractors each time and found that Craftsmen tractors are by far the most cost effective product available. They are reliable, have more accessories available and are still reasonably priced.
Additionally, the products perform extremely well. All my neighbors use professional lawn care services and my lawn still looks as good or better than those "professionally" maintained.

Despite it's V-twin 24 hp engine, this tractor hesitates going uphills. It's better to climb the hills with a head-start. I suspect the engine's torque isn't up to par with it's horsepower; you wont find the torque specs listed anywhere, not even on the Briggs and Stratton website.
The suspension isn't tight, so if the yard is bumpy, the handling is mediocre.
I find it annoying that there are only 6 settings for the deck height; I would like the setting between 3 and 4, but there is no such option. Other tractors on the market have more than double the settings (**********).
Although the tractor has a sturdy construction, the deck is made of thin metal. Be careful not to hit a big rock, or it may shear the deck.
The engine hood should have a latch to keep it from bouncing, although that doesn't happen often.
The blades are not very sharp, since they often fail to cut thick weeds.
The grass-collector chute clogs quite often, especially with high or damp grass. You have to make sure you notice when that happens, or you'll mow half the lawn and find all the clipping scattered on it.
I have not experienced any problems with belts coming off, and the tractor starts and runs reliably so far. It is easy to operate. It has excellent speed on level ground, and the turning radius is also excellent.
This tractor represents a good value.

this is one tuff tractor iv mowed with it,pulld my cart,and i use it alot for odd jobs.my first opinion was traction was terrible well last week i put chains and weights on it now its a tank i dont kno why its not a garden tractor the moter is amazing! i cant wait to get a front plow!also my mowing deck is on and so are the chains...if you put the deck 1 down from the top they WILL NOT HIT! im looking fwrd to a long time of useing my yt4000 best bang for the buck!

It starts reliably every time and is easy to service. It has good horsepower connected to an efficient drive train. I plan to buy the Lawn VAC and a trailer in 2012 and expect it to provide essential assistance for Spring Clean-up. On the downside While there are 5 deck height settings, setting three cuts to close leaving two usable settings. This affects a smooth cut on uneven land (It does show me where to level though). After adding the mulching kit, I found there was no way to adjust the fit to close gaps between deck and cover, which left this driver covered with grass clippings. Finally closed with duct tape and foam filler, but it's not pretty! I expected better from Craftsman.

Wrote an earlier review. Have since had a tech out to look at it. Here's what we determined: Mower deck WAS too low, seems to be a common problem. After saying there was nothing more to do, there was one other thing he could do, but it wasn't in the manual (you'll have to talk to your own tech). Anyways, now it's plenty high (5 in.)....... Speed could not be adjusted up........ The hard starting in cold weather was a simple choke adjustment (annoying that it came from factory that way). The toe-in was OK (part of the tight-turning capability)..........Now that the deck is high enough, & it starts quicker, I feel very good about this tractor. We've had a warm season so far, so I've gotten it out a few more times. I now give it 5 stars.
